Hi Girls,

I was wondering what your opinions are on synthetic versus human hair wigs?

The one I have at this time is one of the less expensive models and I am definitely thinking of upgrading.

Thank You All,

Aurora Eden

I actually have 5, 3 synthetic, and 2 natural hair. Since getting my natural hair wigs i haven't worn my synthetic ones. I have 2 different versions, one is a front lace which i am in love with due to the fact it looks so natural across the forehead. And the other is a cap style, which it has bangs to cover the front of the cap.The natural hair wigs are so easy to work with because you can use heat to style them (curling iron, hair dryer), i did buy special hair spray for my synthetic ones, but never got the best results. This is just my opinion, but go for natural hair, due to all the possibilities you can do to change thier appearance.
Good luck
Hugs
Michelle

Thanks Michelle,

I plan on going to one of the better wig stores to try out some. In fact, I have seen one that I really like but I don't know whether it is real hair of synthetic.

I love having hair again. 🙂  Mine flew the coop years ago.

I have several wigs, mostly synthetic. The cheapest synthetics are basically "you get what you pay for"... not much. You go up to 40-80 bucks, you're going to get a much nicer product. Paula Young makes a nice product at a great value. Looking on sites like Poshmark, you can find new wigs from that brand for $30-50, and be happy with the result. If you can find a wig store locally, that's going to be your best bet. At least go once and get a really good learning experience. Go en Femme, get the whole enchilada! I don't want to sirens more than that on a wig, and I don't worry too much about styling it differently than it was designed to be, as that's what I see as part of the advantage of wigs, I can have a bunch to get different looks, lengths, colors, etc.

Hi Bridgette,

Thank you for your input. 🙂

There are several wig stores in the city, which is only about an hour's drive away. The one I am planning on going to requires making an appointment, so I am going to do that and, as you suggest, go enfemme.

Thanks Again,

Aurora

I have all synthetic.  A good human hair wig is just priced way too much out of my budget.

I started with cheap almost costume like wigs, and while they did the job, it just didn't seem to look right.  The fibres were much coarse.

Eventually I saved up and bought a more higher end synthetic (budget limit of around $200).  I couldn't be happier.  The fibres were much lighter, and looked more realistic.  Of course the more expensive ones are probably made better, but I can't justify the price of admission.

So far all my wigs are around the $200 mark, and they have served me very well.

I have a good collection of both, but most are synthetic. I thing tney are best when it is hot. The human hair ones are the prettiest, but I've spent close to $1000 for one, so naturally I reserve these for special occasions. The key is to take care of them. Both are not maintained the same. Learn how to take care of them and what you can and can't do with them.

I have been wearing synthetic as the human hair are sooo expensive. I wear them daily. I buy the ones around the $300 - 400 dollars. ( I am U.K. so it's about the exchange rate)

The best are lace front with lace top to give a natural parting. My personal preference is Helen Wille.

The key to a nice wig is the style to suit you.  However having a wig cut and styled can make a huge difference. If you are going to a wig store for a personal try out then they may have that service available. Believe me it is worth it. Being able to go En femme is also a great thing to do.

As said, I wear a wig every day so maintenance is  key to longevity of a wig. The first is to wash the wig and condition as recommended. It is amazing how dirty they get and how fresh they look and feel after a simple wash.

I have found that in longer wigs they get frizzy at the ends and the inside that chafes against the back. I used to go to my stylist and she would lightly cut the frizz out. She then recommended a razor comb. You just lightly comb through the frizz and it shaves it away without taking to much hair away. I also just lightly trim the base with sharp scissors. It is done very lightly and doesn't make a noticable difference.

The next is keeping the fibers moist. There are many conditioner sprays and serums to use and sure your appointment will give you this information.

Lastly, after a few months the hair will start to drop so I  go and get my stylist to brighten it up.

My wigs have lasted in excess of 10 months daily wear with this regime.

I don't just buy one wig. I buy another, styled exactly the same as the first so when the first finally gives up, the next is ready to go and is hardly noticeable. I also have one of a very similar style but with a bit of pazazz for those special occasions.

I also use wig tape. I have it on a spool and cut and shape a strip to match the curve of the lace front and also a strip at the back.

Recently I found that they no longer produced my style and had to look around for another. I chose a style and it was a bit longer but similar. I took it to my stylist to cut it in. My stylist looked at it on me and she said she needn't do anything with it as it was perfect. I was unsure but after a holiday from work I returned and all I got was compliments if noticed or no comment at all.

It all may seem expensive but let's face it, it is cheaper to be a wig wearer than visiting the salon every month for a cut and style.

Since I have been going out and about the best compliment is being able to blend in and even better when some says 'I love your hair'. It doesn't happen often but when it does it's a lovely feeling that you have it right.

Hello Angela,

Thank you for all the information, which I will bear in mind during my appointment and in the care of the wig.

I don't have the alternative of a cut and style, so I shall be wearing a wig for sure.

The price range of $200 to $300 fits my budget as well.

Thanks Again,

Aurora Eden

I meant cut and style the wig to tailor it to you...I am sure the salon will do that.
