Wired bras or not

I have found that my bra tends to cause a little irritation to my chest after wearing a bra for some hours, I think this is caused by the underwiring of the bra I am using (a Delmira Minimiser from Amazon). I want to change my choice of bra but am wondering if a non-underwired bra would be sufficient to hold up D cup breast forms. Any advice?

@rebeccabaxter I had the same issue and removed the wire and they no longer irritated me. Now I make sure to buy Bras that don't have wire

@chellycd Just removed the wires (never thought to do that). Such a difference, so much more comfy; makes you wonder why they put them in in the first place.

@rebeccabaxter Glad I could help. Be careful not to cut too much. I've ruined a bra, making a bad cut.

@rebeccabaxter     Hello Becca,         I had a similar problem some years ago. I still buy underwired bra's but remove the wire, it feels better & do not get as bad marks around my chest. My bra's are C cups & are ok with my breast forms, I am sure if you have D cups they will still hold your forms.

@rebeccabaxter The better quality bras have better padding around the wire (started out as a wire a LONG time ago, but plastic these days). All my bras that I wear these days are by Goddess and you don’t really know that the wire is there. Years ago when I bought lesser quality bras, typically the padding at the outer edges would be thin and wear through quickly. I have not had that problem the Goddess products and some are on the order of 6 or 7 years old. Retail price is in the $50-$60USD range, but can be found on sale in the $30 range. My size is 38H and my forms weigh about 2 pounds each.

@rebeccabaxter you can wear non wire bras with molded cups, ala Vanity Fair 71380.  Holds my C and D forms in place  fine.  There are many company that make this type.  As the other girls say, quality makes a difference.

@rebeccabaxter I used to love my 18/40C underwires by many very good brands. "IMHO" they are the best for breast forms to keep them securely in place. But even tho I have lot about 4kgs/10lbs so far this year, I found a/. I somehow I went up two band sizes and b/. underwires stick into my upper arms/underarms. Extenders worked... for a while....But no go.

So I've had to go wire free. Sob sob. Cos I cant even wear the two lovely bras I bought when I had en femme bra fittings.....

@rebeccabaxter I have found that the wire in bras have a little slip movement.  When I push the wire to locate on the outer side of the bra, the wire is no longer irritating in the middle of the chest.  Also I have found with some bras that by slightly bending the inner ends of the wire, the irritation can be stopped.

I did try wireless bras for a while, but I find the under wired bras so mush more supportive.  Only my gym bras are now wireless.  Hugs Christine

I wear non-wired bras which have a tight band under the cups (M&S mostly) and they hold mine in place fine. If your worried about them, you could always use boob tape to help?

@annaredhead Do you know the name of the M&S style so I can check them out myself in the shop?

@rebeccabaxter M&S Crop top bras. They don't have a back fastener which I prefer.

@annaredhead They look good if a little difficult to get into. Is there some sort of cup in them as the pictures on the M&S site don't make it clear and since I don't have breasts actually attached to my body, I wouldn't like to think that my breast forms were going to end up in an amorphous mass in the middle!

@rebeccabaxter I find them as easy to put on as a t-shirt. They are cupped and do hold their shape. The straps are adjustable. Once I've put mine on, I then put my forms in. I'm wearing one in most of the photos I've posted.

I have rather a messed up right shoulder and have found I get on quite well with this type of bra as there's no fastener

@annaredhead Anna,

Went to Plymouth M&S today and bought two different types, the one you recommend and another type. I have kept the your recommendation and my wife has snaffled the other one which was a bit too 'gappy' for my forms. I'll try the crop top for a while and then I will probably get a couple more. Shame they don't come in striking colours though, I like coloured underwear.

Thank you.

I might also add, that I removed the wire from my old bras and that also seems to have cured the problem. This means I now have more bras than I can shake a stick at!

@rebeccabaxter Becca,

I hope they work out for you. I'd be curious to see what you think after you've worn one for a day or two,

@annaredhead Brilliant. When I got home yesterday, I put one on and wore it for hours; really comfortable. Going back to Plymouth tomorrow (have to go anyway) and will get a couple more. Again, it's a real shame they don't do that particular model in a variety of colours.

@rebeccabaxter I'm glad you like them. I've only seen them in black or white, I would love them in peach or red too,

@annaredhead As I said I was going to, I went into Plymouth today and bought two more of those crop tops. One of them is a purple and black patterned one, so despite my earlier complaint that there is a limit to colours, it seems this is not the case.

@rebeccabaxter Good to know, thanks. I'll have to nip into Plymouth and get some. I bought mine at Fraddon

Hi Becca, I'm going to try to send you a link to my bras, they use what they refer to as flexwire, and it is the most comfortable bra I have ever worn - and I've worn quite a few different brands over the years. I wear my Understance 42 D bra every day and can truly recommend them.

@reallylauren Hmm, they do look comfortable but unfortunately not available in the UK as far as I can see.

I wear Bali One Smooth You lightweight underwire bras all day, every day and they are super comfortable. You might also do a re-check to see if you have the right band size.

@d44 Yes, I have the right size, I think it is just a flaw in the underwire. It may even be just in the one bra, I have another in a different colour and I'll be wearing that all day tomorrow so we'll see what that does.

Just had a look at the Bali one you mentioned but they only go up to size 42, I need a 44D. Dammit, it looked really comfy.

There was a deal on Venus for bras and I got one being skeptical.  It is by far and away the most comfortable bra I own and I have quite a few.  It is their Pearl Underwire and I am hopeful they start making some new lacier in the front ones.

The age old wire vs non-wire bra debate. Those who prefer wires prefer wires, and those who don't, don't. Do what works for you. I have both and some work better then others, both wired and non-wired. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Neither is perfect, nor horrible. One bra style may work for some, but not others. I have some wired bras that work great and others that poke me in the breast bone. There is no correct answer other than wear what works for you.

Generally speaking, the bigger the boob, the more structure the bra needs to have, but for some even with large boobs/forms a bra with less structure works better, and visversa. I know this is of no real help, but that is just the way life works sometimes. Get fitted, try a few styles and brands and find what works for you.

@jjandme I tried to like your post, but sometimes it doesn't work.

You are correct. Some work, some don't. Some are comfortable, some aren't. Some are adjustable enough, a few don't go there.

I found one wireless bra, last week, that had a band so stretchy that my breasts forms tried to escape under the band. That is not a good band for us. Snug, non-stretchy bands are reliable.

The only wired bra that gave me trouble has stiffeners under my arms. Both ripped through the cloth material and started poking me. I just sewed them back into the cloth again. Even though I am relatively slim, no front bones / wires bug me.

Try different bras, learn what works and what doesn't work.

Simply put, there is no perfect bra for everybody. If there were, all bras would be the same. We all have to find what works for us in styles that we like. I own a variety of bras because I like a variety of bras. Some are more comfortable than others, but some are prettier, or have other features that I luke, so they are all compromizes.

Some of my wired bras are reasonably comfortable, but  others tend to push into my breat bone. This is likely due to mens' chest being broader which pushes the outside edge out  which pushes the inside edge into the sternum more than it wod in GGs.

There is a US online store called HerRoom. They have a very broad range of undergarments, but they also have a lot of information about bra sizing, how to take measurements, etc. They have also captured information as to how bra sizing works as a function of country. Their charts compare the US, UK, Europe, France, Italy, Australia and Japan covering both cup and band information.

Specifically the page is:

You mentioned you're wearing breast forms; I only use pocketed wire free bras for my breastforms.

I'm paranoid the wired bras may poke thru and puncture the breastforms for starters, and wire free is way more comfy.

While regular bras are much cheaper, the pocketed ones (mastectomy) are way more expensive, but they hold the breastforms in very well and not as sweaty underneath the breastforms.

I'm very pleased with the ones I bought off of amazon, however it took 2 purchases to figure out my bra band size.

Pro-tip for wearing breat forms...if you have the useless pads from some sports bras or bikini, take them out and place them.between tou ski and the form. They can be trimmed to fit and I find they stay in place just fine, as do my forms . I have never felt the need for pocket bras, and fund most of them boring, so I wear my sexier bras with my forms.

@jjandme That's a good idea, I do get a little irritation from the forms on my skin. I'll try that. I've never considered pocket bras, ordinary ones seem perfectly adequate. Perhaps if one does exercise en femme they might be necessary.
