I recently celebrated a major work anniversary, essentially working for the same company for my carreer. I was looking to get a camera which I saw on their list looking early, but then the camera disappeared from the list. I ended up buying a camera for myself.

So then the question of what to get from the choices came up. They had some large TVs, but I don't need another large TV. They also had floor clocks or a grandfather's clock, again something I didn't need. They had a few differet grills which I was thinking about, but I don't grill all that often and thought I wouldn't get value from it. They had various men's and women's jewelry (even with small diamonds). I recently got my ears pierced and could certainly wear some earrings, but I don't go out to enough places where I would wear diamond earrings.

So I ended up getting a bicycle. I haven't ridden in almost 50 years. The last time I went riding, helmets weren't required and most people didn't wear them. There is a bike path about 2 miles from home (although interrupted at points) which used to be a rail line and is now paved over. So I thought I could get back into biking, especially if I'm going to retire in a year or so.

I decided to get a woman's bike so I could go out riding en femme. They called me to make sure to get the right size, asking for "her" height and if I happened to know "her" inseam. Funny how I knew these measurements without any hesitation. (I almost told them it was for me, but decided against it.) I've still got to put it together, but I can't tell anyone about it because it's a woman's bike (Why'd you get a woman's bike?). Oh the problems we create for ourselves! 🙂

There's a bike store near my home and I should be able to get a helmet there. When the weather warms up a bit I'll be able to give a good test.

@alison-anderson

Is it actually called a 'womens' bike?  A lot of bike manufacturers have gone to genderless frame descriptions.  There are 'step-over' (mens) frames and 'step-thru' (womens) frames.  Each has pros and cons regardless of gender.  Step-thru frames are great for convenience and mobility issues.  If someone questions why you have a womens bike, you can counter that it's a step-thru.

Congrats on your retirement.  Glad you got yourself a bike.  It's excellent exercise.

@emilyalt It's definitely a woman's bike. There were both men's and women's versions, and I chose the woman's. Additionally, the questions I was asked definitely were female in gender. Is she an advid biker? What is her height? I know this is a sensitive question, but do you happen to know her inseam length?

Easy to explain Alison, remember that high school groin injury, you still have a hard time lifting your leg above your pelvis. Women's bikes don't have that cross bar and that's why you went with it, no more pain.

And since you still got a camera I hope we get to see some photos of you and the bike.

Good choice Alison.

And if you get a pink frame, you can just say that you were a fan of Raymond Poulidor, a French professional racer. 🫣

@harriette It's a black frame, so that's not going to be a giveaway.

Alison -

Congratulations in reaching that milestone and getting a nice award from your company.

As someone else said it is a step through bike and can easily be explained away as easier with joint issues. I wish I had a step through, maybe it's time for a change.

It is wonderful that you want to get back into riding a bike. I do on occasion and it is fun. Have fun with it.

XOXO
