When I edit a post, there is a checkbox asking if I want to keep a log of my edits (and checked by default). I'm assuming this means the previous version is also kept in the database on the system but the newer version is the one that appears.
My question is whether (or perhaps when) should I keep a log of my edits, and when shouldn't I. Is this wasteful of space to keep these logs? If I'm only fixing spelling or grammar mistakes, or removing or adding a few extra words that need to be fixed (but without changing the context) I'll usually turn off the feature. If the edit changes the content of the message I'll usually leave it on.
In the long run, does it matter whether or not I keep a log of my edits?
Previous versions of a post aren't kept. You're right it would be a waste of space and can negatively affect DB performance.
The only purpose of the logging feature is to let others know when a post has been edited. I usually unchecked the box before submitting an edited post. Occasionally there's a good reason to leave it enabled.
In the long run it doesn't matter one way or the other if you log your edits.
