I chose a vest-top and skirt for today's outfit. Looking back over the photos, the male arms aren't easy to disguise, added to that the permanent marks of being a runner (the year-round tan and watch line) and t-shirt / vest tan lines. I'm not so sure I can get away with shaving my arms, so was wondering has anyone got any tips for making arms look less obviously male, please? Would make up work or just be impossibly messy?
@annaredhead I don't think makeup is the answer - that's a lot of area to cover.
I keep my arms smooth all the time despite only being dolled up a couple times per month. No one has ever said a thing to me about it and if they do, my reply will be "I just prefer it that way." Discussion ended. I do have a bit of a tan line at the top of my arm which will get more severe as we move into summer, but (shrug) oh well.
I will say that some items will make your arms shoulder look bigger, while others can minimize them. I find off-the-shoulder items do this quite well - maybe try one or two! 🙂
I've been removing my arm hair for almost 2 years now and not 1 person has said anything about it to me, so you could probably easily get away with it. As for tan lines, you could try a bronzing moisturizer that will eventually blend all of the color together... Just don't go too dark or it might look orange lol. I like @melodeescarlet 's idea for off the shoulder tops.. I usually end up wearing long sleeve crop tops to hide my arms while still showing some skin haha but this might be a better option to hide the size of my arm muscles
Hi Anna, its Michelle.I have been shaving my arms for years now and nobody has said a word about it.I just retired from Maricopa County as a court security officer after 17 years on the job at a small justice court.Somebody did ask one time why my arms were hairless and I replied, and its true,"I am a covid survivor".I really am a covid survivor ,I have the hospital time to prove it.I used covid as a ready answer and nobody ever questioned it.Or you can say "I like them better this way and they feel cleaner to me."
Hi @annaredhead, I discovered that removing my own arm hair hasn't made any difference, although my body hair has always been very fine and fair - hence I was able to get away with shaving my legs pre-coming out. Either nobody has noticed or they aren't bothered 🙂
If you do choose to remove it, I'd recommend cream or waxing so the hair grows back a bit finer and less bristly.
As for the tan lines... a pashmina or something of the sort perhaps?
I address the arm issue as follows:
Tan Lines- I spend a lot of time outdoors during the summer. I try to go shirtless most of the time to remove the male shirt tan lines. It works for me. You can also wear women's 3/4 sleeve blouses as well.
Are Hair Length- I trim my arm hair every other week to a #1 trimmer. This still shows arm hair but at a much shorter length. A lot of woman do have arm hair just not the long hairy type.
Hair color- I have dark brown hair and am starting to gray on the head. However my arm hairs are mostly still brown. I use a product called Sun In Lemon Hair Lightener while I mow the yard. I have found if used regularly it does lighten my hair to almost a blond.
I just started this regimen a few years ago and have found it to work for me. I find that I am much cooler when I go out during the summer and do not have to use that light cardigan I used to wear.
In my early photos, my arms tended to look a bit like Popeye's. I began trimming my forearm hair a long while ago, I use a Braun trimmer, with a guard attached, that reduces the length of the hair considerably. I don't have much hair above my elbows, thank goodness! So that gets shaved. For photos, I look better, and out in public, I feel better for having less hair. Nobody, not even my outspoken kids have said anything about my arms.
I do understand your conundrum. I cannot address the tan lines. Being an avid cyclist and general outdoorsman, I have similar tan lines. I, however, do not concern myself with them. I often wear sleaveless tops come spring and summer to even out the tan lines, buth otherwise let them be what they are. As for my arm hair, I will run my Wahl clippers with no guard along my arms every 2 to 3 weeks to keep it in check. As others have said, no seems to comment on that with the exception of my mom once.

Or you can say "I like them better this way..."
I truly feel this is always the best answer. Some nit-picking person could bring up (or make up) some study that said hair loss isn't related to covid, or whatever. No one can reasonably debate what you do and don't like. It ends the conversation with a response that, quite honestly, you don't even owe them.
I recently completely shaved all my body hair off, except for my head, and wondered why had I not done it sooner. I really enjoy how fabrics feel on my skin, both in male and female mode. When I first went out with shaved arms, I was really worried about what people would think. So far no one has asked me why. As for the farmers tan that I perpetually have, I have started purchasing blouses with a 3/4 sleeve to help provide some cover.
I decided on shaving "nose to toes" about 3 years (and summers) ago. I told my DADT SO that I was (to misquote Nike, "I'm just doing it".No one including the "legion" of health people that work on my creaky old back and upper thighs has ever said a word.
I strongly reinforce all the lovely ladies on CDH that state until you have done the "whole deal", you just dont know how lovely shaved arms and legs are on stockings in the winter and silk nightwear in the summer.
Happy dressing(and shaving)
Caty.
