Got a few girls asking about making 'do it yourself' hip pads, so I figured I'd post it for everyone. I learned from the video below. You can also check out the YouTube tutorial from catastrophicColin. I had a hard time finding the foam, but eventually found it at Joann's Fabric. (When I bought it, there was an older woman that asked what it was for. Wish I had the courage to tell her the truth.) Also, having an electric knife is quite helpful. Lucky I have one that's intended for my Thanksgiving turkey - now it has two uses. Have fun make'n em!!! These babies really turned a corner for me and immensely improved my figure and overall look (dresses now fit correctly). I can't get dressed without them any more ...
Thank you for posting this Julie! I'll definitely be making a trip to the craft store soon. May I ask what you're wearing over them?
Oh yeah, that's an important question. I don't wear 3-5 pairs of pantyhose like in the video. I start with an old control-top with the legs cut off to about mid thigh. I use these just to hold the pads in place. At this stage, I do a lot of adjustments to get them in the right position, so the control-top shouldn't be all that tight.
The next step is a pair of spanx. I use the 'super higher power footless capri'. I actually cut the shear part off and use only the controlling top part. The most important part of the Spanx is the 'double gusset for when nature calls'. Not all Spanx products have this feature, so you should check before buying. After I go pee for the first time, it's a bit hard to get everything tucked back in place so I usually wear a pair of pantys over the Spanx to hold 'things' up and not dangling. Actually, I only pull out the one necessary part and leave the two gentlemen in place (maybe a bit too graphic, but the description is more about functionality than anything else). I also really like the look of the pantys over my new curves. Of course, if you're going to use the pee hole, you will need to cut a hole in the first control-top. However, this will create a 'dangling' issue in the first step. To avoid this problem, my real first step is wear a thong, which will keep the 'junk' in place while adjusting the pads.
Okay, now you're done. From this point you could go bare legged (nice and cool), wear your favorite hose or anything in between. For me it's dance tights to cover my leg hair.
I should add that the pads should go lower on your legs than you expect (to at least mid thigh). Similarly, they should go higher on the waist than you expect (study the shape of cis-women in this area to see what I mean). Also, the pads give you the opportunity to create a backside butt for yourself - not necessarily a Kardashian landing pad, but if that's what you want it's certainly possible.
And finally, remember the golden ratio: hips and shoulders should be the same width. Before you put your dress on you're going to think they look freakishly wide, but I assure you they will look perfectly natural once you get fully dressed.
Have fun girls, and I look forward to seeing all your curves in the CDH pics ....

Thanks for this detailed description Julie. Not too graphic at all, you answered questions I'd been thinking about. Whew! That's a lot of layers!
Hi Julie, thought I'd give an update on my padding experiments. I haven't done the full pads like in the video yet, but I have made a pair of hip pads to go in a padded brief I already had. It's one that was made for women and it has four removable pads that are less than one inch thick each. It is made more for booty enhancement and the pads don't come far enough out on the hips to give me any significant widening. I started with 2" foam and quickly realized it was way to thick so my finished pads are about half that. I'm fairly happy with how they look in a dress and even my black leggings, especially when paired with a corset. They don't look natural enough to wear with tight jeans though. My big challenge in accomplishing an hourglass is how wide my shoulders are compared to my hips and legs. I'm 48" around my shoulders and a mere 41" at my hips, which is pretty close to what my waist is right now. So I would need 3 1/2" on each hip to get to shoulder width. Honestly I'm tempted to try out a big voluptuous look, and at 6' tall that might be the most realistic look for me, except that my legs are way too thin for those kind of proportions. I've actually always thought that my legs and butt looked feminine, they're just out of proportion with the rest of my body! My goal is to lose weight and slim my waist with diet and exercise and as much corset training as I can fit in, hopefully getting my waist down to 34" or possibly even 32". That will allow me to achieve a 10" difference between waist and hips with minimal padding, then I'll use clothing styles to minimalize my shoulder width as much as I can. So I'm hesitant to spend much money on clothing until I get down to my target sizes. That's going to be tough though because I'm turning into a real shopaholic!
Has anyone tried vacuum therapy on their butt?
I have some XLarge Noogleberry cups and I have used them on my butt recently and have seen some nice - although temporary results. It would be nice to have a fuller butt and more curvy figure, and I was wondering if anyone had done this for a while and had any more permanent results. 🙂
I think the biggest mistake people make when trying to make hip and bum pads is they do not make them (anatomically) correct. If you are serious about your crossdressing you need to make them realistic.I see loads of hip pads....bum pads advertised online and to be honest they look ridiculous. If you look at a woman's shape there is a v-shape that starts just above the knee, and go's out to the top of the thigh, and then in towards the waist.Equally the female rear swells out just above the waist line, from the arch of the back and then go's back in a v shape to just above the back of the knee.
I have sculpted a set of hip/leg...and bum/leg pads that are anatomically correct and when worn under a bodystocking give STUNNING results.
To see me on Flickr just google Shannon5358 to see these pads, and what can be done.

Hi Shannon, I checked out your Flickr page and you are right about stunning results. You say you're wearing a body stocking over your pads, could you share exactly where your getting it? It looks very realistic with bra and panties. Would love to learn more about these marvelous pads you're creating!
Hi Sofia,
you can get the bodystockings easily on ebay. You should look out for one that is 120 denier long-sleeve.
As far as the pads go.....it has taken me many many hours to get them THIS good, and takes a long time to make one pad either HIP or BUM.I have looked at countless hip pads of all sorts online, and seriously NONE come close to mine. I am STILL refining them so they will even get better.
Not sure if you have seen "FEMSKIN" its a silicone female bodysuit this costs about $900 from the States,my pads look much better than this.
The pads are not turned back to front to a SMOOTH side,my pads are ANATOMICALLY shaped ready to wear, and as you can see are totally Feminine.
I retire next year and I intend to sell these as a SET on ebay/etc,so hope you will forgive me for not giving anything away. The pics you see were taken as a reflection in my mirror with a video cam under poor light conditions.
