@jane44

Jane, I'd start at 18 and go from there. Better it be a bit too big, than a bit too small.

@jane44 I’m 6-3 and a 38”, I fit 16 and 18, depending on the cut. Also those that are XL labeled. The problems is length. You don’t want them too short. Jeans are short on me, I just added some blue bandanna material to the cuff and they look fantastic! I have bought trousers at Torrid and TJ max and they all fit rather well and with enough length in the legs.
Dresses, I can wear an 18 on average well. The issues has been shoulder width. Some are tight some fit. Each manufacturer cut differently, so one maker might fit another to tight the other to loose. So some are 16, while others might be an 18 or 20.

@jane44 Hi Jane.  I assume you plan to order online. As others have already said sizing varies from store to store.  Get all your measurements and check the sizing guide provided by almost all stores.  One place a size 16 might be perfect ad another 18 will be best.  As far as dresses go so much depends on the te style and cut f the dress.  Torrid is my favorite place to shop and even there I prefer to try on the clothes.  I am not a big person and most Torrid clothes size 00 or 0 is perfect (00= large and 0= xlarge)  One cute top there he size 00 and 0 were too tight around the chest so I went with size 1 ( 1 =1xlarge) which was perfect.  Good luck on your purchases.

@jane44 My waist is also 36" and 16-18 would be loose on me, for the most part. I have one brand of shorts that is marked as a 9, so you cannot rely on an arbitrary size number, which makes shopping on-line a bit of a problem. There you have to rely on their sizing guides and maybe have to deal with returns.

This is why I prefer to shop in person using a tape measure and my own sizing card of my body measurements. If the tape measure says OK, then game on.

@jane44 I'm 6', 155 lbs and usually fit in a size 14 dress. Depending on the cut, you will probably wind up with both 16 & 18 sizes in your closet.

I'm slightly taller 🙁 but also a 36in waist. I find an 18UK in a dress works with my broad shoulders but I can get in to a 14UK skirt or leggings, this does mean that the 18 dress is sometimes a bit baggy around the middle so you might be able to squeeze in to a 16 dress. I have a strappy dress in a 16 that I can get in to.  Have fun

Yvette.

Jane, I am 6'0 around 200# and about35" waist. I fit snuggly into my size 12 stretch jeans and a size 14 dress. Buy stretch waist clothing when possible, they make everything easier and still look great. LuvNHugs, TERI

Hi Jane,

If you're buying new, remember that sizing can vary from store to store, which complicates matters. Your actual body shape will obviously have an effect as well.

Check out the store's returns policy first, then buy two of the same item in different sizes. Try them on at home, and take back the one that doesn't fit. You generally have at least 14 days for a returns period. My wife does this all the time!
