Anyone tried dying a synthetic wig? Did it work? What did you use?

I've received a wig today and I'm really not keen on the colour, it's blond(ish) and it just doesn't suit me. I can return it but I'm wondering about dying it in some freaky streaks instead.

@rebeccabaxter Typically synthetic wigs can't be dyed. The usual dyes don't soak into the fibers so even if it takes a bit it will wear off, be brushed off. Once you try it you won't be able to return it so if it's not to your liking just exchange it.

I've not tried this, but from reading an article on the subject, the consensus is that dyeing a synthetic wig is going to need a product that would change the colour of plastic.

Reading through the article it sounds a bit of a faff to me.

@annaredhead Hmm, think I'll just send it back then. I think I was being optimistic with blonde (of any shade), it just does not look right on me. My wife seems to think it looks ok and I know she'd tell me if it wasn't good, but I have to feel it's right and I'm not sure I do. She says to wait and see what it looks like in the daylight but I can hardly change wigs when I go into a shop or something, so I can't see that doing any good.

However, she's been right before, and she is a woman, so we'll wait until the weather is OK and go outside—not that that seems to be going to happen soon as it's peeing with rain at the moment and doesn't look to be brightening up until Saturday.

I believe there are some sprays available that will do the job. Check the usual online purveyors.

@ab123 I've just watched a couple of YouTube dyeing videos, nothing looks very promising, I'm afraid.

Suggestion: When searching for videos to colour hair, type 'dyeing' videos, not 'dying' videos: the latter results are not what you might hope for Trepidation .

@rebeccabaxter I've found Alex Poletti on YT to be pretty reliable. She has a video on wig dying. Search for HOW TO DYE A SYNTHETIC WIG.

Disclaimer: listening to her is a bit like mainlining sugar.

@melodeescarlet I'll have a look...

Well, some of that seems ok but it looks like a lot of work.

Wow, Alex Poletti is quite the bright spark!

Hi Becca, I have done lots of dyeing and painting of costumes and fibers and in fact even a few synthetic wigs (which only sort of worked).  I say sort, of since the color of plastic is in the original melt and dyeing on plastic is just surface.  I've had better luck with spray painting but still it's just so much easier to buy the color needed.  So, I vote to return it and try again.  Good Luck,  Marg
