I was wondering if someone could recommend a good face powder for good beard coverage so to speak. The reason I ask is sometimes I only have a couple hours on my own to dress and to do the full foundation/ makeup removal afterwards just cuts into the time dressed, but I do like the idea of looking as feminine as possible during that time and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a face powder that will accomplish that goal ?

@ginger1968

Had this pre-prepared 🙂 (part of a book project).

'You can only shave your face so close. The longer you are out the greater the risk of beard shadow showing through your make up. You can eliminate this as follows. After you add your primer, apply a very small amount of bright red lipstick (a little goes a long way!) to your beard line. This is a method that takes some practice but adding a reddish tint to your face offsets the slight blueish tint that facial hair can create. Take a very red lipstick and apply a little to your fingers. Spread this to lightly cover your jawline, neck and around your mouth. The area around your mouth (moustache, the corners of your lips, and from the lower lip to the chin) are generally the darkest, hardest to cover areas. Don’t forget to work under your chin and down your neck - it’s very common for cross dressers to overlook these areas. Be thorough but try not to overdo it! If you’ve applied it correctly you’ll look like you have a slightly red beard. Some people then like to add a layer of concealer, such as Dermablend, but that’s up to you. Experiment, and see what works on your own face. Only then should you start to apply your foundation.

'It’s a tricky process and it will probably take a lot of trial and error before you get it right. Your skin colour and foundation shade will likely be a factor. Don’t be surprised or discouraged if you have a slightly orange tint the first few times you try it!'

Hiya Ginger! I don't know about a powder for covering facial hair. I use a rust colored primer since my facial hair is dark, and then a foundation on top of that to get a more natural color.

Perhaps someone more makeup savvy than I (a long list, I assure you) can help?

Hi Ginger,

It would be fair to describe makeup as something of an addiction for me. If we are out together, regardless of how I am presenting, my wife drops me off at makeup counters as a sort of adult creche if she has something to do I'm not interested in.

Beard cover, as Ellie says, is a matter of a huge amount of practice as it is very individual. Colour theory is good as a starting point but it will still require much trial and plenty of error.

For day looks with lighter makeup it becomes almost impossible but recently I have adopted a slightly different approach.

I use a peach tinted stick primer for everywhere below my cheek bones and tap it into my skin with my fingers, putty primer or none for everywhere else.

Max Factor Pan Stik foundation is great when you are in a hurry. Limited shades but high pigment density and easy on. I usually apply some to my beard area only and blend out then do my eyes.

For my eyes I add a bit more drama than some people may for the day but not full on night glam.

Apply foundation to the rest of my face as lightly as I can and if I am not happy with the beard cover put some of the foundation on a beauty blender a press into the areas I am not happy with, don't rub or drag it will undo things.

Bronzer then blush as they work a bit like setting powders so they cut out a layer and then tinted setting powder for the beard area if I'm concerned, press on, gently dust off.

Nude lipstick.

The beard will not be totally gone when you look in your makeup mirror but the makeup will be lighter to wear and remove and with blush and slightly dramatic eyes you will find that at three feet you don't see the shadow and you will be drawn to looking at the top half of you face and (hopefully) enjoy seeing the feminine you.

Time for me to shut up as I could gone on all day.

All the best in your makeup adventures and please remember, makeup is supposed to be fun and played with, if you like it, it is right.

Eve xx

Is the red lipstick or cover a universal rule? Reason I ask is that I had a makeover and the artist, who had lots of experience with beard cover, said that I should use something “light,” not red, due to my skin tone being “cool neutral.” I failed to ask for specifics, such as what color range to use in covering a beard. Any insights or tips would be appreciated. Thx!
