I did it. That was quite a learning experience.

I first painted my finger nails around age 6 using my mom's nail polish. Since then, I've painted a few fingers and always removed the polish before it fully dried. I know, what a waste.

I bought black nail polish 2 months ago after seeing many guys wearing black polish on finger nails, and after reading a few articles. My motivation was for covering pinky toe nails that had become discolored.

Some nerve hit in me today, continuing the last week's steps forward. I have this bohemian dress that I want to wear out again this week with wedge sandals. So, time to dive in.

I started with 2 pinky toes, experimented with making the illusion of cute nails by only painting 90% of the nail. Not bad.

2 hours went by, family was all off doing their thing, it was time to dive deeper.

The rest of the 10 were painted. Things I learned:

  1. Use latex gloves to avoid staining fingers with minor brush strokes gone awry.
  2. Don't panic, any mistakes can be touched up later with a q-tip dipped in nail polish remover.
  3. Definitely use toe spacers so you don't have to sit frog footed.
  4. A flashlight is so useful for seeing the nail vs shadows.
  5. I need some surgeon's or dentist's magnifying glasses with a head lamp.
  6. No wonder my wife just goes to the salon. I can't justify the pedicure cost yet for myself.
  7. Enjoy whatever happens. It's not going to be perfect. It's all part of learning.

Not bad for a first time. Can't wait to wear those wedges out!

Do you have any tips to share?

@lea-jhene As I have some issues with my back, I go every few weeks to have a pedicure.  So much easier and less painful than trying to cut my own toe nails.  Once I get back home, my wife and I will discuss which color should go on my toe nails and she paints them for me.

I have never worn any type of shoe (sandal, flip flops) while dressed in drab which would show my painted nails.  This past summer however, was very hot.  I said "What the hell".  At my age I can do what I want.  So I donned shorts and sandals as I dressed in drab for the day to go to work.

The first color this summer was so subtle, the way it blended it looked very much like my skin tone.  The next color however was much different.  It was a dark caramel.  An earthy, brown look that was actually quite masculine.

If anyone noticed they didn't say anything.  If anyone would have I would have used my line from the second paragraph, "At my age, I can do what I want."  😜

@karla1958 Love your attitude! That's great confidence just by wearing nail polish out and visible.

I've been venturing out more in drab mode and women's sandals (flats). Most people don't seem to notice, not even store security guards. A few have glanced and double glanced but those people probably felt more uneasy with with they were feeling than me.

It was finally time last night to take off that color, which was another wonderful girly, learning experience. I had touched it up once about 3 weeks ago, and added a top coat that time. I was quite amazed how well it all looked, and still shiny.

I wore my flat sandals out a lot over the last 6 weeks to many places and let many get a glimpse of my beautiful home done pedicure. It was so exciting to look down at my toes each day knowing this part of me was there, visible, and not as temporary as dressing.

After watching several YouTube videos, and reading a few tips online, off came the color in prep for another color.  Some of the things I learned are:

  • Trim nails first so there is less nail polish to remove.
  • Cut cotton balls or makeup cleaning pads into small pieces. Put some nail polish remover on them and place over toe nails, letting them sit on the toe nails for a few minutes.
  • Gently scrub outwards, away from the cuticle area.
  • It might take a couple applications.
  • Scrub gently, not too vigorously.
  • Next time, put a base coat first. That will make removing a color easier later.

20 min, the color was mostly removed. For nail health, let the nails breathe for a few days before applying the next new color.

Lea -

How wonderful that you painted your toes.

Have you considered asking your wife to go for mani-pedi's together? My wife and I do every few weeks. The first time we went I got clear polish on  my toes and fingers. It was in October and I joked that I should get black on my toes but went with clear. When we left the salon she told me I could have gotten color if I wanted. The next time we went I got red on my toes. She knew I dressed but didn't want to see me, however, she thought the toes were nice. I only do it in the cooler months when I wear socks and shoes although I have had my toes exposed at the gym and a hotel pool without any issues. I think for the most part people don't notice. The days we go for our mani-pedi's are fun days out together.

You could consider asking your wife to go for mani-pedi's together and see what she has to say.

XOXO

Thanks for the tips.  Love doing my nails and would love to do my toenails.  Just wish I could find some high heel peak-a-boo or high heel sandals that fit my Amazonian woman’s feet.  Size 13.

I'm with you...painting toe nails is a pain! I much prefer to go to a salon to get mine done. You should go with your wife!

My wife and I often do each other. It is much easier to get smooth coverage when you do not have to bend land stretch. And it is great fun!

Lea, spend the money. My first pedi was more that 35 years ago, and believe me it's the only way to go. Took me a few salons to find out the one best for me and been going to the same one for about 10 years now and Kevin is the best. Finally about 3 months ago I had him put polish on and now I'm total hooked and always looking forward to my next appointment, it's a splurge that is totally worth giving myself.

Wonderful advice Sherri. I might just do so. It's amazing the things we uncover we love and wish we had done years before to enjoy them longer.

Lea, I love painting my nails. I love going to a salon to get my nails done even as a guy I have had compliments on my nail, even from a few guys. I have seen many men wearing nail polish and I have in guy mode, but I love having pretty nails as a women. Makes me feel so feminine and pretty.

Flora, is that size 13 men or women? Size 13 for women are fairly easily found at Torrid dot com. I have some nice sandals & bootees from them.

Very true. Bending and trying to see the angles is hard. Maybe someday.

Wonderful suggestion. Seems like this could be a gurl&girl bonding experience.

It's just toe nail color after all 🙂 I'm contemplating getting my toes done in a natural, neutral color sometime, like a shade of tan or light pink blush. Nobody wants to see gross guy toes otherwise.

Woke up this morning, tried on strappy sandals again, OMG, cute. I can hardly contain my excitement. The black nail polish makes me feel bolder.

Why do we CDs feel so nervous doing something healthy.

Now to see how long I can keep the polish without feeling guilty since I'll be wearing socks to hide it at home when the family is around.

I'm thinking of testing my neighborhood by running errands in guy mode with guy sandals. I doubt anyone would even notice 🙂

Great thread Lea! For me, I love painting my own toes, it’s all part of that getting ready experience that I just adore. I usually like to go with a light pink but I recently did a deep Cabernet red that looked really sexy with my clear strapped heels. Even when I’m just in my girly lounge look (yoga pants and flip flops), I love looking down and seeing my feminine toes. I do need to get a toe spacer though, so good reminder. I have thought about doing the press on pedicure kit at home but it kind of feels like cheating lol.

Lea, I always have bright red toes and get a pedicure every two weeks. I wear women's sandals in my normal feminine guy mode so that everyone can see my red toenails. When they see my red toenails, they know that I am playing for the girl's team 😀. I get a lot of compliments from women, and often catch men staring at my red toes. Nothing will make you feel so feminine as red toenails in sandals. Add some toe rings to make them even more feminine.

It is a wonderful gurl/girl bonding experience. I can't help but think that it helped my wife in accepting my dressing to the point of spending whole days dressed with her.

Your choice of colors is good, especially to start. I get my fingernails done in a light pink blush, it's not noticeable at all except for the shine.

Have fun with it.

XOXO
