Oh, makeup is a huge minefield to try and get through.  It really depends on how far you want to go with it.  You could just do the basics with some foundation or go all the way and add some smokey eye looks.  It's all dependant on how much you want to spend.

I would suggest youtube for some application tips and if you are comfortable enough head to the cosmetics counter and get some help with your proper shades.

Hope this helps

Cynthia

Less, is more. You don't need a ton of random makeup crap to start. Just get the basic stuff and build on that. Everyone will tell you watch youtube for help. Don't give up when the first few times you try, you completely suck at it! lol We have all been there, invest in a lot of makeup remover, so you can try try again, faster. Hope this helps a little!

The very basics:

- Moisturizer

- Mascara

- Eyeshadow

- Lipstick

Next step:

- Foundation

- Eyeliner pencil

- Concealer

- Rouge

Then for “Intermediate” level:

- Primer

- Lip liner

- Corrector

- Translucent powder

“Almost there”

- Brow pencil/filler

- Mixing eyeshadow colors

- Liquid eyeliner

”Advanced”

- False eyelashes

- Contouring

- Highlighting

Ok, I know I’m missing something here, so feel free to add/ correct this list.

Gaby 💜

Foundation I would say is a basic for us! As beard cover is key.

My basic to makeup is I try one thing. Let say lipstick. I try it and get kind of good at it. Put it on check it out tell i think it looks good. I watch You Tube videos and get good ideas before I start but i work with an item. As it has been said many times it is kind of frustrating because if you do not have everything together perfect you will be disappointed and want to quit. Here is my key though. Makeup is used by everyone, men and woman and Cross dressers and Transgenders and its main purpose is to bring out the look you want. Now many girls love to dress with minimal makeup and look feminine with little makeup so do many woman. So as I grow with my makeup I look at what I want to make look more feminine and more beautiful remembering it will never be perfect. One of the biggest problem I felt was that my eyes did not look feminine enough. I felt they looked very male that I think is due to having what are called hooded eye lids. It took me time to find out they were called, then once I found out what they were called I found there is a great way to apply your makeup for this style of eye. Now I have been working on my eyes for about 2 years to improve the look and make it quick and easy to apply but that I think is the joy of being the woman I am. Just like trying to put together the best outfit or find the right pair of shoes. (LOL my weakness) The thing is woman have years and years and years to work on finding their style and practice we are all trying to do it in the next year or two on a canvas that takes more work than those GGs with a very feminine canvas. But once you get that first item on right you will be so excited you will want to try the next thing. I started with lipstick and moved on, but I will say the eyes are the hardest to get. There are so very many parts, from the eye brow, to the eye lashes to the eyelids and the shadow and color and the shape and the style. My eye brows were the last thing I learned to do or should I say learning to do because I every time I did them I looked like Frankenstein(the monster LOL) and I though it was not a major thing now I want to perfect them so i have been working on them in the last couple years. I find it makes a big change for me.
Well I have rambled on now why to long. Basically, start very very basic one thing and try it get good at it and move on to the next.
OH OH! one last thing I looked at so many woman and picture of woman that look similar to my facial structure and saw how they put on their makeup style, color contour etc. and I learned a lot of what to do and not to do. Just like every woman cannot wear a certain dress or a pair of high waist slacks or what ever, there will be certain makeup that will not work for you. As the ladies have said before a good primer and foundation help create the canvas then the artist can go to work. And makeup is a lot of art and practice. Good luck and love that shade of lipstick. Wink!!

The most important thing is to start simple!! we all have to start off at the beginning and there is no shame in that 🙂 . Bronzer, concealer, strobing, advanced eyeshadow techniques all come afterwards. I would concentrate on lipstick and applying this correctly including going around the 'cupids bow' on your top lip. Eyeliner is good too, this takes care and a steady hand, but with practice you can perfect it, some people prefer kohl pencils, others like gel eyeliner and again you can have a felt tip eyeliner. Try mascara too!! just be careful not to poke your eye out!! most of us have got mascara in our eyes i dare to say, but again, practice makes perfect. Just practice practice practice 🙂 . You could begin with a simple, one colour eyeshadow and practice with that, when you get more experienced, you will be going for 2,3,4 or 5 colours and blending!! 🙂 . Start simple hun and work up, its the easiest way to go, plus it will build your confidence too xx

Are there any specific video tutorials you girls like. Just looking at all the different videos can be overwhelming. Also do you prefer/like crosdresser centric videos?

Thanks

Lipstick can be so frustrating!

Practice that first, and don't worry about how many times you get it wrong!

Once you've got the "blinking" trick, mascara is relatively easy.

Get a good set of brushes. Brushes make the difference between a clown and a natural look when doing foundation and the subtle arts of blusher, contouring, bronzer, eyeshadow and so on.

But foundation, mascara and lippy will get you a long way, so focus on those first!

I think you should start with 💄 lipstick. Simply begin with it and others all you'll learn slowly.

I prefer not to watch cross dresser makeup videos, as the finished effect always looks like a well made up cross dresser!

The really glam videos don't help me much either, except for nights out.

I prefer to watch videos made by and for women aimed at getting a natural look, and contouring tutorials.

The dark arts of ninja contouring can make the difference between a feminine and a cross dresser look!

I only started makeup less than a year ago. The basics for me are foundation, eye shadow and lipstick. Finding the right shade of foundation is tricky, but it makes a difference in achieving a natural look. I've graduated to blended eye shadow, mascara, eye liner and a bit of contouring. At this stage I'm ready for a professional consultation to get my colors figured out. At all takes patience, practice and time.

Hi Harley,

Might I suggest you venture into your favorite department store (Macy’s. J C Penney’s) or Walgreens and step up to the cosmetics counter.  You can ask for a makeover and enjoy yourself.  If you’d prefer just ask that the beautician for suggestions for your eyes and mouth.  If you like the color(s) you could purchase a lipstick, eyebrow pencil, or eye shadow.  Ask about your complexion too and what colors/shades may work best.

Most of all enjoy the experience.
