hi girls xx. after the debacle with the kids make up set I bought a couple of weeks ago and finding it was not quite what it was supposed to be, I am looking to buy, from scratch, in a word... make up! this time after learning my lesson before, now I am going to buy adults make up.

now after many hours of looking to see whats available and members offering great support on here as to what kind of make up I need, I find myself narrowing it all down to two possibilities.

I can go down the road of buying each item individually, that is, eye shadow, lip stick, mascara etc.

or I could buy an adults make up set which contains most of it, such as, eye shadow pallettes, blush, eye liner etc. most if not all of the kits offer a huge range of eye shadow colors and lip gloss colors but they tend to omit, lip stick and mascara for some strange reason.

of course another road I could go down, is a mixture of the two.... buy a kit, and add individual items to it.

what do you girls think? are kits any good? or are they going to be as poor as the ill-fated kids set I bought? would you buy the make up as to what you specifically need only?

love fiona xx

Hi Fi. Funny that you asked. We have an event tonight so I took my wife shoping for a new dress and shoes. Then she mentioned she also needed some makeup because our daughter keeps on taking hers every time she is home from college.

I was very happy to help... as you may remember, she is not accepting of my dressing, so I wasn’t able to provide with more advice and tips, but the first thing was that she asked if it would better to get a kit containig everything or buying individual items.

Makeup kits are cheaper. And normally with quality to match. So I adviced her to find what she needed buying separates. I’d be more than happy to help more but well, maybe, just maybe some time in the future.

Ah, and yes, I suggest her to first buy a good set of brushes, which she did, but she also bought a package of the dreadful plastic foam tip eyeshay applicators. (Had to bite my tongue on that one!)

Hi Fiona,

In regards to kits I think that you have to consider how much use you are going to get out of it.

Yes it can be wonderful to buy a kit that has a 50 colour palette but are you really going to use all or most of them?

Many are still learning and having a 50 colour palette can be overwhelming.

If I buy kits I look at the ELF ones and only buy on Boxing Day.

If you are starting out buy drugstore brand mascara, eyeliner, foundation etc.

And buy 3 shades of eyeshadow that is really all you need to start off. I suggest one in white, one in malt and the other in gray. These three work fine for day and night.

ELF and NYX have good contour palettes and ELF has a good lipstick palette.

So my suggestion is buy individual and build from there. If you are going for a kit I suggest looking at them on Boxing Day Sales.

Like Gaby I would suggest in good brushes. They do make a big difference in application and blending.

ELF has several kits and it would not surprise me that you will be able to get two of them after Christmas at a price that will only get you one kit today.

Hi Fiona.........how are you sweetie.  I have seen kits and was leery about them. I am taking a make-up/cosmetician course and hear is what I learned.  If you are a beginner in make up----get the cheap stuff, as you will waste a lot learning how to do it.  Multiple color eye shadows and lipsticks are fine...IF ...you will be using them. How is your cross dressing schedule? Ask your self what you are aiming for.

In CD'g you consider your age and make-up, dress appropriately....unless you are going for the drag queen effect. If you are happy with your "look" and make-up....start buying quality products from known mfgrs: L'Oreal Paris, Revlon, Covergirl, Max Factor...these are a much higher quality...last longer and are product matched for best results. All makes age and becomes useless but Quality stuff lasts longer. A lot of store brands come from China and this stuff is no good.  OK, I know somebody is going to refute me and says it works for them...that is OK. The above mentioned Mfgrs have videos on there web sites which are very good. You tube also has many videos on technique....valuable source. Also, you can watch the advertisements and pick what you think is best. Do buy a set of Good brushes and wash them regularly...again how to's on you tube. Price is not always a guide to quality. I use L'Oreal Paris exclusively and get consistant excellent results. It will not be cheap so decide what you really need.

Now for some fun.  There is a store for female items called SSence look the up and get a laugh...the fashions are outrageous and the prices are beyond outrageous. Example.......1 pair of Dolce and Gabbana panties......$450.00!!!!!!!!! They are so exclusive that you must have an appointment to go in!!! Carry all designer stuff and believe me, I would not be caught dead in that stuff. I bought a Canada Goose Arctic Expedition Coat from them....$1300.00 US. Could not obtain in Canada, as they are back-logged for a year!

Do let me know how you progress.......till then.......

Hugs and Kisses

hi girls, many many thanks for your replies. after thinking it all over, I decided to go down the route of separate items, for two reasons.....

1. quality

2. you get a lot of stuff in kits you probably would never use.

I figured that if you pay say £25 for a kit, it is not going to be good quality as my wife rightly mentioned, you can pay that for a single lipstick alone! not that I would pay anywhere near that and certainly not, since I am a total beginner.

secondly, most of the eyeshadow colours rightly said above in a reply to this post, are not or ever used. I could not really see the point of having things that I wouldn't use but concentrate on the things I would.

the things I have bought so far are....

lip stick, both stick and liquid.

blush powder

bronzer powder

eyeliner pencil

mascara

eyeshadow pallete with the colours I would use.

a selection of decent brushes.

bb crème.

I dont know if you think I need to make any additions to this, but its a start!

Not sure what bb crème is, but you will very likely need a good foundation and concealer.

One really crucial thing for most cd/tg individuals is facial hair coverage. More important than eyeshadow or lipstick even, if you are trying to be accepted/blend in as a woman.

hi gabriela. bb crème is similar to foundation according to my wife, only its thinner and wont clog your pores like foundation can, leading to spots. I am going to see what the effect is, if I am not happy, then foundation will be next!

regarding the facial hair, I always wet shave with a five blade razor to make sure I get a really clean shave before I would even attempt at putting make up on.
