Here we stand in our finest lingerie, wearing something old to protect that lingerie from an errant drip of some make up product, a face that is without blemish and ready for us to apply our foundation.
You may ask yourself, well, how did I get here? How was I able to choose the correct shade of foundation and powder? Here is what I learned from a gal at Sephora related to finding the proper shade.
She told me that to determine my proper shade of foundation and powder, I should color match the skin on my wrist. Well, more specifically, the section of skin positioned where the buckle of your watch would sit, if you were wearing a watch. This is the portion of skin just below your hand if you are looking at your hand palm side up.
Knowing this, you had previously visited your favorite retailer and spent time at their make up counter applying small dabs of foundation onto this part of your wrist until you found one that was literally undetectable when spread evenly.
I purchased foundation and powder from Sephora that day even though I had been using Cover Girl products with good results prior to that. I came home excited to try this product (and wear lovely lingerie at the same time). As I applied the Sephora foundation to my face, I realized how different it was from the Cover Girl product. The Sephora product was the correct shade for my skin color, but it felt thinner and it felt like I needed to apply more in order to get the same coverage I would get with one application of the Cover Girl foundation. Maybe this would be a desirable quality in some cases, but I liked the more substantial feel that I had become accustomed to with the Cover Girl product.
That’s when it dawned on me. The foundation products of each different cosmetic company also have unique properties. It is not just about color matching but about a whole array of customized attributes that make them more or less suitable for a given set of circumstances. They have different feels, greasy or dry, thin or viscous, shimmering or flat. You must make the correct color match but you must also take all of these other factors into consideration.
So, I learned a couple lessons that I can pass along to you. First, when choosing a new product, you must first think about your requirements more carefully and convey them to the helpful staff at your favorite make up counter. They are the professionals that can guide you to the right product. Are you looking for a lighter weight product that breathes better because you will be attending an outside event in July? Are you looking for something with shimmer because it would complement the sequined gown that you bought to wear to the gala? I now have a much better understanding and appreciation for the vast amount of space dedicated to the cosmetic section of my favorite retailer.
Anyway, back to completing our make up application. Using a make up wedge, apply your chosen color-matched foundation. Continue to spread it evenly until there are no noticeable streaks or uneven areas. Wait for the foundation to dry.
Using a large make up brush with a flat circular edge begin to apply the matching powder to your entire face. Apply the powder using short, semi-circular strokes until your face is uniformly covered with powder. When complete, we move on to part 5, eyes, but for now we are giddy with the feel of the lingerie, the sight of our face covered with our carefully chosen make up and the prospect of what is still to come.

Great points Penelope :
Don't forget to allow your skin care routine to set before applying foundation.
Finding the correct foundation color match can be a challenge but make sure you know you undertone as well. If you are warm tone but purchase a cool tone foundation your face with look muddy. And if you are cool tone and purchase a warm tone foundation you end up looking orange.
And as Penelope mentioned foundation comes in cream, liquid and powder. If you are older and have some texture(lines) I really suggest using a liquid formula and carry a cream or powder for touch up during the day.
Penelope explained applying the foundation with a sponge. Some use a dry sponge but you may find others use a sponge that is damp. And use a stipple motion to apply the foundation.
However I like a brush. Pick up a little on the brush and using stipple motion to apply. And then use a damp sponge in a stipple motion.
Penelope you mentioned a powder application and I am not sure if that was powder foundation, setting powder or a finishing powder.
Once you apply the liquid foundation as Penelope mentioned you need to apply a setting powder to set it. Use a light hand and less is more. As Penelope said a big fluffy brush works great and you can also use a powder puff.
Great job Penelope!!!!
Great info Penelope. The virtual apps that stores like Ulta have on their websites do a pretty good job of matching foundation as well. The app allows you to describe what kind of foundation you are looking for and then you take a selfie and it recommends products and shades for you. I need to find a way to set the foundation without using powder since it aggravates my allergies and a running nose does not add to a beautiful face.
