Looking for advice or helpful anecdotes on acquiring heels in regards to the following:

1. Cost

2. Sizing

3. Style

I've seen a good range of prices on Amazon. Do you recommend?

I think the shoes are in women's sizes... so, I should just increment the size by 1 to arrive at the men's size. Correct?

Practical shoes ...would be practical, but i want to go sexy removed link Is this a mistake? I'm really only dressing for me in my home.

Thanks, dolls xxo

Hey, Heidi, thanks for posting this topic, I'm sure you'll have plenty replies and it'll be helpful for others too.

In terms of cost, the old adage, you get what you pay for, applies here. I've found more expensive shoes are made better and fit better..up to a point, beyond which you're paying for a name!

Sizing, the best way, if you're buying online, is to search for a foot measurement or shoe sizing chart, there's loads online and you can print one. That'll give you length and width of your feet and most good suppliers give sizes in US, UK and EU as well as inches or centimetres.

Style is up to you but be careful! I bought a gorgeous pair of 5" stilleto heels that absolutely took my breath away when I opened the box. They looked great on but I could barely even stand in them, far less walk! Others seem to manage ok but I'll stick to 3.5" to 4" heels, quite a few of them in the "block heel" style. They still look good but I'm not risking injury by wearing them.

Amazon is a good place to start as they have a good range and returns are easy but there's a lot of online suppliers and don't forget charity (thrift) shops.

@heidihammerson I like Belk Department Stores, prices are good and they have a good return policy.

I just helped another member with getting her first pair of heels here.

Since shoe sizes vary so much, no one general formula will work.Trying shoes on in stores answer most questions immediately.

@heidihammerson As far as sizing goes, the rule I work with is to add 1.5 to a male size to get a women's size.   It's better to size up where you can't find the right half size but admittedly, I do accept sizing down too.   Shoes do stretch and if you can survive the breaking period, they will be fine.   Of course, strappy shoes will break in easily.  I have also had good luck working with European sizing.  You can find conversion tables online.  As an example, a US men's size 10 is a European 43.   A 43 is a women's size 12.  I have found this to be a better predictor of whether or not shoes will be comfortable for me.

As for sources, I have bought shoes from Amazon on occasion.   I have found the fit to vary somewhat but their return policy is good.   The quality can also vary.   I have had better luck buying shoes here in the US from DSW and stores like Macy's and Nordstrom.  They have a good selection across the size spectrum and have good return policies.

Heidi,

Torrid covers all three of your requirements. They have wide (W) and (WW) wider withs. Some upto 13 in woman's sizes.

I posted an article about shoes awhile back. Titled If the shoe fits. I give a run through of sizing, styles and about measuring your feet.

@heidihammerson Id also recommend checking out the selection at Target. They carry some cute options in large sizes. I think the pricing is similar to Amazon for the most part.

I’ve bought most of my  heels on Amazon.. took me a couple purchases to find out my size. I don’t think it’s as simple as +1 sadly. I wear a men’s 9 and a women’s 10 or 11 depending on the brand. But even so I have 2 pairs of the same brand same size where one feels bigger than the other. So you may waste some money at first unless you can return them. Basically once you find some cute heels that fit NEVER get rid of them because they will feel amazing lol. That was my biggest regret from purging in the past because it can be so hard to find perfect fitting shoes. And if you’re  only dressing for yourself I say go as sexy as you want! That’s where the fun is !

You need to go 1 and a half to two sizes bigger than your men's shoe size to fit correctly.

Amazon has a nice range of options at different price points.  I have had good luck with Dream Pairs which are nice for a decent price.  You can get a lot of their shoes on Amazon or directly from their website.  If you are just dressing for the house their is no reason to not go for it.  I love wearing 4 inch heels around the house when I can. It makes me feel so feminine and sexy.   If I was venturing out I would opt for something a bit more practical and comfortable.

As far as sizing goes, I think the average difference between men's and woman's sizes is 1.5 in US sizing.  For me, I am a size 10 and I find that in women's shoes I generally get the right fit when I buy an 11 for open toe shoes and 12 for closed toe but it does very a bit based on brand.  I think Natalie nailed it when she said if you find a comfortable shoe treasure it.  I have lost some beautiful and comfortable heels during my purges and really regret it.  I had a pair of 4 inch peep toe pumps that were so comfortable I wore them the entire night at a MASH party where I dressed as Klinger and my feet felt great.  Lost those shoes in a purge and have never found another pair as sexy and comfortable as those were.

I confess to being a shoeaholic.  If I had the space and my wife wouldn't mind I would have 100's of pairs of shoes instead of the few I own.

I have purchased shoes on line, in shoe stores and thrift shops.

Cost - prices vary so much - buy what you can afford and look for sales.

Sizing is tricky - as has been said there is no one formula - one thing I have found that helps in finding a shoe that fits is to remember that women's shoes come in W and WW widths - I have found that by getting a wider shoe I can get a shoe in my regular size that fits well - I wear a men's 10 1/2 - 11 and can wear a women's 11W - it will depend on the style though - remember that the height of the heel will cause your foot to slip a little so the wider width in the toe box helps - in thrift shops and shoe stores I have tried on shoes - if you go when the store isn't crowded it is easier to do that but like most shopping others don't pay attention and SA's only care about selling product

Style - go for the look you want - if you're only dressing at home get what you want no holds barred - if for public wear get something androgynous - I have a pair of ankle boots that I bought in a shoe store - my wife said I could wear them in public (which I have and do) as they look like men's cowboy boots only short - I've also seen Darrius Rucker on TV wearing a pair of ankle boots in an animal print - personally I think so long as you don't go too high in the heel or too blingy wearing female shoes in public shouldn't be an issue

One can never have too many shoes. Get what you want. I would go with inexpensive shoes at first until you find a style and size that you like then look at more expensive shoes that will last longer. Just have fun with it.

XOXO
Suzanne

The BreastFormStore and EnFemme both advertise on CDH and have a good selection of shoes.

If you want to go sexy, go sexy. You can wear what ever you like at home. If you start going out, then  a bit of contemplation is necassary. At home I am often in a bra and panties with a sheer robe and heel heels. I feel sexy as can be , but I certainly would collect the mail that way.

I look for size and then cost. Taking a UK 12 shoe means my options are limited, but I've still managed to have the basis of a decent shoe collection.

I can wear heels up to about 3" for a whole day and do possess higher heels than that which I can walk in a straight in line only.

If I go out en-femme I will generally be wearing a 2" heel as I can also drive in them.

I have just purchased a platform heel which are 6" stilettoes which are for a planned photoshoot. They will make me about 6 foot 8 and totally impractical but they look great.

I think try to  have a mix of shoes you can wear all day or walk in if you go out and have those to look sexy in a photo.

Hugs,

Anna xx

I wear a mens size 11 shoe.  I go up two sizes for womens.  Every footwear I've tried in a woman's 13 fits me fine.

I am a size 9 in men’s and wear a size 11 in most shoes. Finding a size 10.5 can be hard to find. I also purchased a shoe stretcher, in case you get a shoe that’s too narrow. I recently purchased some lovely boots and they were slightly large on me (woman’s size 11). I have purchased on Amazon but buy most of my shoes on eBay. I’m a fanatic for finding deals on eBay for all things women wear. I limit my purchases to USA only (quicker delivery) but not always. I also check the sellers ratings so I know they are a reputable seller.  Good luck. -Traci

The only heels I've purchased thus far is from Amazon, and to my surprise both pairs fit beautifully. I wear a 9 men's and got 11 women's and am very happy, but that's the only experience I can offer at this point

Ahaha, gals shoes, love 'em.

For me, I find the stuff on amazon to be cheap and of low quality - but there are exceptions.  I go to Zappos, Nordstrom, Marmi Shoes and even Target at times.  All have many sizes and styles up to ladies size 13 (Target not so much).

Good quality, price and easy returns.

Have shoe shopping !!!!    Staci...

Ooh I love heels - one of my favorite parts of dressing.

there were many great suggestions here because sizing varies a bit.  Some websites will give the foot length and width measures - and I find that more helpful than sizes either American or otherwise.  After a bit of trial and error (because these measures can be off a tad) I know what range works best for me.
