I know there is always a lot of talk here about heels, but what do you think of that combination? I think it has traditionally been a faut pas, but one that has been re-evaluated by my generation. I think it’s very cute! I was thinking about it again recently thanks to Alice on GBBO (anyone else watching?) and has definitely made me start thinking about some cute gender-neutral sneakers I could work into my wardrobe and feel extra good en femme without being frivolous or having to hide anything. My only concern is how they will go with tights? Any of you girls do this or do you play by the old rules?
Aoife, my ankles are long past heels. I have been wearing sneakers/ walking shoes for a long time with tights. I go for a walk at my lunch and see women in walking shoes, tights and dresses/skirts all the time. Of course, now we are having a blast of winter, so not so much. I wear what is comfortable.
Hi Aoife
Just my personal opinion.
Sneakers are best either with a short skirt and casual up top ( either a cute tee or something from sportswear), or a three quarter length skirt, I’m loving three quarter length silky flowing pleated skirts at the moment and think they look fab with sneakers.
Knee length skirts Just don’t look right paired with sneakers. Same with tights(pantyhose), just don’t look right with sneakers so if going for the look I’d get my razor out and put these smooth legs on show. Think it may be that I associate sneakers with ‘sporty’ hence bare legs, but ‘sporty’ and tights just don’t add up to me.
Just my opinion, everybody’s fashion sense is different and that is fantastic.
You are right that sneakers are very androgynous, so go for it, only problem is women’s sizes in sneakers don’t go as high as men’s. I’ve been a runner for decades and men’s running shoes in particular have great styles. Sometimes wear them with women’s skinny jeans and a women’s fitted tee shirt and nobody seems to care. I feel I look good in them and that’s all that matters🤣

I do with hiking skirt and sports top...but then I am out hiking.
With that length it is definitely a classic! With a shorter skirt, that’s what I think is more of a new thing. I think it’s covert cute and sexy and I’ve heard a lot of my guys who to my knowledge don’t dress agree on that. Fun and playful.
I’ve been purposely collecting clothes that fit a certain esthetic and one of those is my love for Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars. They work with my polka dot midi quite well, though my Doc Marten black and white wing tips are cuter. I have a skirt that I haven’t worn yet in more fall colors that I think would be nice with my maroon chucks. Again, my style is fun and quirky with elements of punk, ‘80’s with a little goth side.
Not surprised you have such a good answer!
Sneakers with skirts or dresses is a very cute look, but its appeal is partly that it goes against the grain of being a girl. I feel like if you're ultra feminine you can get away with an intentional "unladylike" image. But since I'm not really a feminine femme, I have to go with traditional feminine clothes and shoes, just to stay even.
Also, the shoes that make my feet look daintier turn out to be high heels.😊
I feel I'm too old for that now. If I was still in my 20s then I'd probably jump at other but now that I'm approaching 40 I doubt I'd be able to carry it off.
I see women wearing this combination often - all ages.
If it's good enough for a GG, it's good enough for me!
I drive in trainers, and have a nice pink pair of Converse as an alternative.

I do wear sneakers with denim skirts and feel great with them on. I would not wear them with other type of material except a pair of kids would look good with some vintage style fashions.
I think it depends on the size of your feet Aoife, super white tennis pumps can look super cool with below the knee pleated skirts and lacy white socks in the summer.
Never wear black and never bigger than a size seven UK = size 9 US.
all my sneakers are women s I think the good with cargo skirts and skorts
I often see some women in uptown Charlotte banking district in very professional attire wearing sneakers out walking somewhere at lunch time or to a parking deck after work. They just about always make it look great. Learned to admire fashion like I never could have imagined before I put on my first dress.
