As summer slowly approaches in the UK I find myself looking for a new summer dress or two to enjoy the feeling of the warm breeze on my legs. Looking through the online stores many of them show the models wearing them with white sports shoes or trainers. Although they look great I don’t think the look would suit me as I don’t think I could make them look particularly feminine or elegant. I was just wondering if anyone had ideas of what shoes to go with a nice floral summer dress that’s feminine but comfortable and practical enough to wear out and about in the garden x

@lauragrainger Practical. White may be fashionable and sort of universal, but white isn't necessarily always practical.

I have a pair of grey slip-on Sketchers with a pink highlight that may be more practical, utilitarian, sort of feminine.

@lauragrainger I have a couple of pairs of "trainers" that work really well and look surprisingly feminine. My favorite summer footwear is some kind of a sandal. In guy mode I always wear sandals in the summer unless I'm doing construction work. These are nice because they're worn by both men and women wear I live so they do double duty. I have a really cute pair of wedged sandals in a nice beige color that work with just about everything. I think you can see them in my pictures. Not as practical, but really comfortable. Around here you can get flat sandals do in feminine style. The "gladiator" style is a favorite and on my list to buy.

Here's my quick list of summer shoes

Chaco sandals (can be worn in both modes, might seem expensive but mine last forever and the customer service is good)

flat sandals, gladiator or other style

healed sandals

casual "trainers"

"balet" slippers

@lauragrainger    Hello Laura,      I agree with you that trainers/sport shoes are not for me either. I like to wear white pumps/sandals or similar type shoes in the summer.     love   Helenmarie

@lauragrainger Trainers with a platform are in vogue now and have that feminine differential.    I plan on getting a pair to wear with my summer dresses for trips to the park and casual wear.   Of course, I still love my high heel, strappy sandals!

Contrary to what you write, I personally find that white trainers work very well with calf-length summer dresses; they are feminine and hugely more practical than a pair of heels when walking on summer lawns. If you really can't be doing with them then a pair of sandal wedges works well too. I have pair in beige that I bought from NEXT for £32.

@rebeccabaxter

I so nearly bought those from Next last year, but it was late summer, so decided to wait until this year.

I will usually wear sandals, flats (different colors), or trainers (different colors).  I have also been know to wear my running shows on an occassion.  As I have seen women wear similar footwear, I do not see any issue with my choices not fitting in.

Hi Laura, I'd suggest wedge sandals in whatever height you can comfortably manage. You can possibly find some wedge trainers, too, if you really want to replicate the catalog look, but for my money wedges are sooper fab! 😉

I think sandals or wedges are a great way to show off those pretty polished toes.  They are polished no?

@michellemybell oh yes painted toes are a must for summer so why not show them off. I now just have the dilemma of which wedges to buy 😍

I find wedgies and sandals with kitten heels look nice if on the streets because they do show off the toe nails which we love to display. I am not a fan of the tennis shoes which are popular now unless I am on long walks or on a bike

I don't think rules apply as dresses are dressed up or down by shoe choice and accessories. I have worn the same dress for a dinner out with heels, a nice cardigan, accessories and heels then to a garden with different top, shoes and a outerwear.

Go with whatever you feel comfortable with.

for short outings while wearing a dress, less than a day, I prefer sandals with at minimum a 1” heel and max 2”. They do not overpower the outfit and provide a nice feminine look. It makes me feel more feminine. As for full days exploring like on vacation, definitely laced shoes, sketchers, and probably lightweight pants for comfort. I feel there is no set style today. It is what you are comfortable for ease of walking and presentation.

I quite like ankle boots with summer dresses - I have some nice chunky-heeled lace-up ankle boots that pretty well go with anything, summer dresses included.

Also, Dr Martens- type boots (my partner sports this look quite frequently and looks great) or Converse boots.

Shoe-boots are also an option - particularly those with peep-toes to show off the toenails - and can be found in a variety of styles.

When you say wedges, are you referring to espadrilles? They are the ones that have the rope-like wedge heel, usually a canvas upper, and may be seen in either a closed toe or sandal style. Very versatile, and can be dressed up or down. Usually super comfortable too.
