Yes, I know it's been discussed before but it's only recently that I've thought about using a hair remover product.

On my hands and arms I use an epilator and this seems to work pretty well with hardly any discomfort (after the first couple of times!). I use the epilator on my lower legs and it works fairly well after a few passes, but when it comes to my thighs it's quite a different matter; there it's damn painful and doesn't really do anything except torture me for no gain, so I shave my upper legs (and 'down there' but I ONLY use a wet razor there).

So I really only need a better method for my thighs as the hair is dark, tough and difficult to remove; this is where my question about Veet comes in.

Firstly, does it work at all?

Secondly, is it better on certain body-hair types, if so, which is it best for?

@rebeccabaxter I suggest to get them professionally waxed, the more you do the less the hair growth. And it last

@abby24 Trouble is, you have to let the hair grow and I can't bring myself to do that.

When epilating,. Always go against the hair growth. Keep the skin tight by using your free hand. Hair growth cycle is about 5 to 6 weeks. So there are different stages of growth in a cycle. So the 5 to 6 time line gives you the maximum hair removal. The time line is also used when waxing.

Use a exfoliating wash every 3 days to minimize ingrown hairs. You can exfoliate your heels, knees and elbows once a day.

No need to exfoliate when blade shaving. The blades do the exfoliating.

Use moisturizer a day after exfoliating to keep skin hydrated.

I’m really curious about this topic myself. I just bought some Veet to try out and will gladly share my thoughts after I use it.

The Veet worked pretty well. Wasn’t perfect, but got me pretty smooth.

The odor wasn’t overly bad and don’t feel like my skin got overly dry or sensitive.

I used the Veet Gel Cream for legs and body. It says “-35% chemical ingredients” and was Aloe & Violet Blossom scented.

@rebeccabaxter Veet or Nair will work. I just always found them messy and smelly. I too use an epilator, but I use it all over except the bits.

1: absolutely

2: I have no idea. You could go on their web site for their recommendations. I would think that hair characteristics would be more critical than skin type.

P.S. you will only apply a cream to the wrong areas ONCE. Trust me. The two most critical areas are nipples and scrotum. Don't go there.

I have tried most home hair removal treatments (except tapes or waxing) at one time or another.

For the first attempt, liberally apply a cream. When done correctly, there will be no hair left. Veet doesn't stink anywhere nearly as badly as Nair. If the smell still bothers you, burn an intense stick nearby. Now, once hair starts regrowing (the rest are dormant), then use an IPL wand on them as frequently as you can. The intense light eventually kills the roots; it is effective and painless.

I use an epilator to compliment the IPL. It also attacks the roots. Take a pain pill before you start.

Creams are really useful for immediate hair removal because it takes less time than using an epilator over large areas. You won't need to use creams very often if you use the other two treatments frequently.

Using this combined attack on your body hair will eliminate most of it in 1-1.5 years, based upon my own experience. The more diligent that you are, the more IPL time spent, the sooner it will stop growing at all. This cleared most of my leg hair surprisingly quickly, which allows more time to concentrate on the rest of my important areas.

@rebeccabaxter It absolutely works. I tried it years ago when I needed to remove hair for surgery & wasn't brave enough to try a razor. & yes I did use it "there" with no problems at all. You do need to let it grow out a bit though for best results if I remember correctly. I just shave these days but that's just because it's cheaper & I'm tight 🤣

@rebeccabaxter If your hair is still dark, i would look into Laser and be done with it. second choice would be Get a good IPL, like the "Ulike 10 " but it will take 6 to 8 wks. Third choice would be waxing but it will take several monthes to get the hair slowed and thinned. Bet choice would be laser while its still effective on dark hair.

I epilate my legs. You get used to the pain, and after a while, it stops hurting. The great thing about epilating is that the hairs either do not grow back, or when they do there's not so much. I only have to epilate every couple of months these days. Veet stinks, well it used to when I tried it, plus you have to get into all sorts of positions to apply it. Stick with the epilator. It's better in the long run.

@dazzler Calves are fine, knees are ok, but thighs are too painful, perhaps I'll have another go, you know, suck it up a bit.

I've used veet, and for me it is so so results.

Mind you, I did the guy thing and skimmed the instructions.   I used it on my genital area, and I really slathered it on.   I let it sit as per instructions, and then used the plastic scrape thing to scrape the hairs off.

Well, the hairs didn't scrape off, I had to shave it off.  And second, after doing this a few times, I re read the instructions and it said to not apply it anywhere near the genital area as it will burn (yeah it did sting and I thought it was the product removing the hair, nope I was wrong).

To me using the product I didn't notice much of a difference.  Mind you, I think veet was designed for fine hair on arms, legs for girls.  Guys have much coarser hair and I think this is where veet is not as effective.

@wendyswift I used some compound I bought in a supermarket in Italy two weeks ago whilst we were staying there. Unfortunately it was too large to bring back through security (or so I thought: Italian airport security didn’t seem as rigid as UK!)

It didn’t smell too bad. Worked a dream on my legs - they are still hair free. Did zip on my chest, stung, hurt and brought me out in a rash. Did hands and arms quite nicely.

Booked for chest and stomach to be waxed in a fortnight so having to let it grow 😖, but would defo use on legs again.

I found it a messy process to apply evenly. I wasn't happy about the chemicals on my skin, and paranoid about leaving it on too long. I haven't used it in ages, so there's a half used tube lying around, but I'm not tempted to reuse it. I really disliked the smell too, and the results were patchy and needed revsiting with a razor anyway. But if you are just using it on a relatively small area like your thighs it might be a solution for you.

I wax my legs, but have used Veet in the past on my chest and arms. Works well enough, but it's a hassle and smells bad (not as bad as Nair, thank goodness) so I quit it. I just shave my arms and chest. Not ideal, so maybe I'll give the epilator a shot... after some shots of my own, given the painful stories I've heard!

@justnikki Once you've got the first pass done, it seems to get less painful, but in some places, that first pass is too hard.

@abby24 Thanks Abby! I am having to let my chest and tummy hair grow, which I dislike but one has to suffer for one’s art! The place I have booked doesn’t do legs it seems. It’s not cheap though!

I watched a Juliette Noir video recently about hair removal and JN was recommending some laser gun. It’s not cheap but if it works it would pay for itself, and my wife could use it too.

I haven’t seen a discussion here on the merits of such things but no doubt there has been.

Love n hugs to you

@chrissieprice984340 too bad they don’t do legs. The longer you wax the less the hair will grow. I’ve had IPL done on my armpits and pubic area. Totally worth it. But takes a few appointments.

@chrissieprice984340 I had my IPL done at a salon. Is effective.  But there are a few restrictions too the process

1. has to be dark hair

2. Area can’t be tattooed or pierced ( all my tattoos and piercings had to be completely covered during the session , can cause problems )

That seems odd. I would have thought that the main reason GGs have waxes is to get rid of leg hair -- women are always complaining that they need to shave their legs. I doubt many of them go to a salon for a bikini-wax and say to the pro "don't worry about the legs, I hear the gorilla-look is back in fashion."

I still have some Veet hair removal cream for sensitive skin left, and I use it mainly on my underarms. On the rest of my body, I use Body Natur Depilmen, which removes thicker, coarser hair because it's made for depilate men. It's worked quite well for me. You just have to be careful not to leave it on longer than necessary. It's used in the shower. The third step is to remove the most stubborn hairs with the Veet leg shaver.

Moisturizers afterward help a lot. I also use legs suntan makeup. This allows me to avoid having to wear stockings sometimes.

I have the same issue with epilating my thighs.  I have been dealing with that by sneaking up on it.  Each time I go a little bit higher up.  I'm almost all the way up now and should be fully smooth in 2 to 4 more sessions.  The nice thing is that after that first pass it doesn't hurt as much.

@michellemybell That's the way I am approaching it now. I'll pick up the epilator, just hack at a patch for a few minutes, curse the fact that I have hairy legs (swearing is proven to help with pain, really), then give up for the day, to try again tomorrow. I'll get there.

Just a thought though I have never tried it.  Perhaps tattoo cream would help lessening the torture whilst epilating the thigh area. ?????

@gwen495 I would have thought applying a greasy substance would just make it worse; the epilator might pull the hair, give you the pain, then lose its grip on the hair and leave it in. Don't know, perhaps I'll try it.

@rebeccabaxter Hi Becca thankyou for your comments.  Like I aforesaid I have not used tattoo cream nor do I have tattoo’s.  But as I understand the application of the cream and it does come in different strengths as well,  is applied to the skin sometime before hand maybe 30min or so perhaps even longer.  Maybe there is some YouTube videos on the subject.

if you do use it and if it works ok,  please let me know as I plan to get an epilator soon and most likely I will run into the same issues.

kind regards Gwen

I can offer a bit of advice. I have used both Veet and Nair. Nair also makes a cream that they say is for men. I didn't find it to work any better.

Both work about 98%. There are often a few stragglers that need to be shaved off. Veet tends to have a less offensive odor than Nair. Since they are both depilitories and not epilators, they only remove the hair from the surface, so it doesn't last much longer than shaving.

If you are going to go high up on your leg, I would strongly suggest using lots of Vasoline or similar product on your genitals first. This will protect them from the chemicals in case your inner thighs accidentally touches your genitals while in the waiting period.

If you are going to wax, hard wax is less painful on the upper leg than soft wax. Soft wax is where you have to put down a muslin strip over the wax and pull. It tends to pull the loser skin too, which is what increases the pain. Hard wax is put on, allowed to cool, and then pulled off. The skin is held by one hand as you pull, so it tends not to pull and not hurt as much. One time when I had gone for soft wax, they had me hold the skin tight while they pulled. It was better but still pulled at the skin because the soft wax is still sticky when it's ready to be pulled.

Even waxing isn't 100% effective. They have to go back and pull out a few hairs here and there with a tweezer. It's funny how pulling out a single hair hurts so much more than ripping out many hairs with a single pull of the wax.

Epilation methods (removing from the root such as epilator, wax, tweezing) will cause the hair to grow back finer over time, and will pull out easier. I think it took about 2 years at about 4 week intervals before it wasn't as painful. But they also last longer. (If you have ever tweezed a hair, you can see how much hair is below the skin. I have tweezed a couple of upper lip hairs near the nose where it's hard to get a razor, and found about twice the amount of hair below the skin than above.)

I'm now usually on a 5-6 week interval (6 in the colder months, 5 in the warmer). I am a week overdue because of travel and will not be able to get waxed for at least another week. I can see some fine hairs on my stomach, and my forearms near the elbows have some hair. The knees feel stubbly but you can't see the hair. The rest of me you can't see it unless you look close (except from the waist to the upper thighs where they don't do it on men). But that is after almost 10 years of waxing.

The difficulty is that waxing most of the body is expensive to keep up. Even with the 25% discount (buy 9 get 3 free), you still have to tip every time. It probably costs me (on average) about $250/month (US dollars).

A lot more information than you asked, but I hope it's helpful.
