I'm thinking of having a go with an epilator, anyone recommend a make and model that works well?

@rebeccabaxter I got a Philips BRE model that came paired with a narrow trimmer, too. It was on sale and the cost was insignificant.

It works OK, I guess, but I try to not use it too much. Most of my hair gets eliminated with an IPL wand. The epilator is for back-up and it compliments the way the IPL works. Less pain that way, too. 🤕🤪😇

@rebeccabaxter I inherited my wife’s Braun Silk Epil Series 3. I like it a lot even though it’s their entry model. Braun have an amazing deal on it at the moment. Katie.

@rebeccabaxter Please pardon my ignorance, but an epilator pulls hair out?  Can it be used in private areas?

Hi Miki,

In theory yes, but very carefully. Things are bit more sensitive down below. There's a lot of flappy skin, you need to keep things taut. And anyway you should always pre-trim longer hairs before using the epilator.

@hobby Yes, it grabs hold of them and tears them from your skin; if you have a low tolerance for pain, this is probably not for you. I have been using mine on my hands and arms and I can cope; my wife suggested I try it on my face but that is never going to happen! The more sensitive the skin, the more it's going to hurt.

I am working on the premise that some folk have said that it only hurts the first few times; I hope they are right.

There is no way I would go anywhere near my privates with this device. I once tried shaving there with an electric razor and ended up with mini nicks all over the place as there wasn't a way to get the skin tight enough so it didn't get chopped up by the rotating blades.

I have found the epilator misses some hairs, no matter how many times I go over them, and for these I just get a pair of tweezers and pull them out myself.

@hobby Yes it can. Just be sure to keep the skin taut so it doesn't get caught in the tweezers. I use it everywhere, including there and underarms. It takes a little practice in those areas but it works.

The only real restriction is stated in the manual. It is not for the face.

@rebeccabaxter

Hi Becca,

My first one was a medium priced Braun, which seemed fine. It finally died on me.

My current one is a Panasonic ES-EL87. Extra wide, double rollers and a flexible head. It's a wet / dry one and got a bunch of attachments which I don't really use, except for the 'sonic scrubber' for exfoliating. It's probably a bit expensive, if all you're doing is giving epilating a try. I think this model been superceded. You might find one cheap in ebay or such like.

I've only just started using it again ... I'm pleased to say I have rediscovered the charging cable ! Without power it just don't cut it 😉

@rebeccabaxter I use the Braun Silk Epil 5. It works, what else can I say.

It has an LED light and it's amazing how it highlights the hairs that you would miss otherwise. I've been using mine for about 15 years now and love it. I got it on Ebay for under $30.

I looked at all those that can be used wet or dry and considering how long it takes to do even my legs I don't want to run the shower for all that time. As for rechargeable, well same is true there. I can't see stopping to recharge half way through or having to wait till tomorrow to finish. That might be fine for touchups, but not for a good session.

The cord on mine is about 6' long and that's plenty.

@cherylt I think they've moved on. I have a Braun Silk-epil 5 and it is rechargeable and wet/dry use too. It does still have the little light on it.

I use the Braun silk epil 9  which works well.  I have only been removing my leg hair for around 6 months and haven't tried any others.  I spend around 5-10 minutes  touching up around once a week and legs stay deliciously smooth.

@michellemybell Looks good, but it's very expensive and I can hardly send it back if I don't like it. Unfortunately, I have just had to purchase a new lawnmower (for cutting the grass, not shaving! 🙂 ) but I'll keep it in mind during my investigations.

It's mostly for my hands and arms that I want it as my skirts are generally quite long so I don't have to worry about it too much on the legs.

@rebeccabaxter They have cheaper models and they are all suppose to work well.  I don't have any personal experience though.

@michellemybell Amazon has pushed my want-it-now button and on a whim, I have ordered an Epil 5 for no other reason than it will come later today. Well under half the price of the Epil 9, we'll see how it goes.

@rebeccabaxter  I have only used the epi on my legs and back of my hands.  It is very tolerable on the legs and gets less unpleasant over time.  The back of my hands, however, are not fun to do.  I'm not sure why but it hurts quite a bit to do them.  So, I'm suggesting you don't start with your hands and you follow the advice that comes with the unit.  Good luck with it.

@michellemybell Some areas of skin are very sensitive when its hair gets yanked out. Some areas I feel nothing.

Take a pain pill before starting. 😉

@michellemybell It's my hands that I most want it for. I have found if I just plunge in and get on with it, it's ok. Bit like ripping a bandaid off, do it quick and it doesn't hurt as much or for as long.

I second rhe Bruan as I have used it for years. My first one was the male model and it was much more robust then the women's version. It had more metal in it, but I do not think they make it anymore...or at least I could not find one to replace it after losing it in a fire. I use mine regularly, but have my legs and brows done professionally. For the past several months I have used a home hot, hard wax kit for some areas, but srill use my Bruan regularly.

I bought one from Amazon in 2021, the brand was Jemotek. I got it because it was cheap and I didn't want to spend out on an expensive one until I was sure it worked. It's not available on Amazon now, but it still works for me. I use it mainly on my legs and upper arms. It actually works very well and my legs are almost hair free, although paranoia kicks in when I see a single black hair, that gets me reaching for the epilator to get rid of it. LOL

Overall, I am very pleased with it, and after the first use, it doesn't hurt anymore.

My first one was a moderately priced one from Amazon. It was slower than i liked and I replaced it with a "Ulike 10". I don't remember exactly how much it cost but its well worth it. The process takes time and one with a fast recovery phase is well worth it. Plus the "Ulike 10' model has several power settings so the stubborn hairs are no match for this.

@robertaf Whoa! Some epilators struggle with pulling some resistant hair out?

That sounds uncomfortable. 🤕

@harriette It doesnt pull any hair. it simply hits the hair with a beam of light and that kills it at the root. No pain whatsoever.

@robertaf Ah, an IPL wand. Yeah, they have power settings.

An epilator struggling with stubborn hair would be a real problem.  🤕
