I have rarely (fully) cross-dressed. It's not that I don't enjoy it — just has never been enough of a priority for me to spend a lot of time and money on. I'm a 50-something, straight, married male who, from a very early age (my mid teens) was approached by girls (friends and girlfriends alike) about crossdressing, esp. wearing makeup.
Over the years, the propensity has grown stronger, then waned, then grown stronger again. I learned in my teens how to coax a makeover (at least a partial one) out of my favorite female schoolmates. Most here are likely familiar with the methods — e.g., paying rapt attention to them as they apply their makeup, pretending to try to find your Carmex as they're applying their lipstick, etc. Eventually, I'd get bold enough to suggest/request a makeover, even if pretending to do so in jest, then "conceding" when they took me seriously.
Later (in my 30s), I'd graduate to hitting the local Ogle/other cosmetology school and forking over $10 to have the students there do their best to prettify me. Once or twice, I used Halloween as an excuse, or even a bet I'd lost or a prank I was playing. Again, you all know the routine(s), I'm sure.
I have, on a few occasions, a long, long time ago, dressed completely "in femme", though I'm not sure that it was called that back then. It was so enjoyable that, obviously, had life dealt me any number of different decks of cards, I'd likely do it full-time (or, at least, frequently). However, wearing makeup (and esp. mascara and lipstick) are, to me, at least 85% or better of the pleasure of crossdressing, and I can do that pretty-much any time I please without much effort.

Hi Mikki, and welcome. I know what you mean about makeup and its ability to complete transform a person's looks. If anyone would have told me just five years ago I would be doing semi-professional makeovers for others (including CIS girls) I would have called them crazy. But after a bunch of You Tube tutorials and even more practice I have gotten to where I love it. It has become my hobby, so much so I have two large professional makeup kits filled with virtually everything possible (including a bunch of special effects stuff). At may age I discovered how face lift tape could take years off my looks. It is so much fun to apply the tape because when I am done I have basically a blank canvas to work with.
