I've always been a big fan of uniforms since I first started to cross dress whilst at school.

A few years ago, I was working in Australia and wanted to see if I could buy a school dress in my size. All of the schools have different designs - usually plaid summer dresses of some description and they looked really feminine. It was hard to find an online store so I had to pluck up the courage to visit a store and eventually caught a bus to the other side of town so I didn't bump into anyone I knew. My heart was beating like a drum machine and I was a bit flustered. At first I was relieved to see that there was only one other customer in the shop (a lady of similar age and thankfully not with a child), but soon realised that this meant the shop assistant wanted to help rather than just let me look around.

I told her I was looking for something for a fancy dress party that I was going to with my girlfriend, trying hard to give the impression that it was for her. We looked at a couple of different ones and it must have become clear to her that I was 'choosing' rather than just wanting 'an outfit' for my girlfriend as she said "why don't you try it on". I was really embarrassed to have been caught out, but the other customer smiled and said "yes, you have to try it on to see if it fits". OMG.

I tried a couple on and they felt amazing. I looked terrible, of course, but that is not the point of crossdressing for me. It was a bit of a dream come true to experience the empathy that these two women showed towards me. I chose one and hurriedly paid over the money. None of us said a word until I left and the assistant shouted "I hope you enjoy the party...!"

She knew... 😉

Sophie,

That is a great story. I would love for that to happen to me. The closest I've ever come to that was a number of years ago, when a sales girl at VS came over to help me, and I asked something about sizes. She made some comment to me that they would be the same as whatever size I usually wear. So, she knew, but I'm guessing it's probably not as rare of an occurrence as we may think.

I had a similar experience in a Hanes/Bali Outlet Store.  I went in (as Julie) to look at long line bras.  The sales gal asked if she could help, and I actually had to explain what I meant by "long line bra"! She refered to it as Shapewear.  She found one or two and directed me to the changing room area.  There were 3 doors, and one was occupied.  She was letting me into the open room when the woman from the occupied room stepped out to ask her a question.  There we were - 3 women discussing bras! I still get a rush when I think about it.

Bravo Sophie, how brave of you to shop in person, I'm sure I couldn't have done it.

Hi Sophie,

Thanks for sharing your story.  It took a lot of courage to shop in person.

I imagined being a swan the first time it happened: I went into Pretty Essentials, and expensive boutique shop in Brighton, fully femme, and was almost drooling over a gorgeous Gatsby style dress, with sequins, fringes, geometric designs and the gauziest, liveliest cream material.

The assistant just casually asked me if I wanted to try it on, indicating the open curtain to the changing room, plushly carpeted, with a chandelier period style chair and huge, ornate mirror.

I smiled as casually as I could manage, and thanked her very much, took the delicious garment off the rail and into the changing room.

The dress was a slightly snug fit, with no elasticity, and I struggled a bit, as I was terrified of damaging it, but managed to wriggle in.

But the zip... we've all been there! I just couldn't reach.

So I began admiring myself in the mirror, imagining the zip done up.

The sales assistant then asked me how I was doing, and did I want to come out into the lighter shop space.

I admitted that I loved the dress, but couldn't quite do the zip up, and her response was to fling open the curtain, saying "Let me give you a hand with that!"

Of course, my bra straps - the entire back of my bra was showing, but I figured that right there, right then, I was a lady, so I welcomed being treated as such, enjoying the feeling of having the garment straightened out where I couldn't see, and the zip being done up for me, with a soft rasping sound.

I then saw myself in the big shop mirrors and gasped - this dress is even better on me than on the rail!

An elderly lady, sat by the mirror, waiting for another lady to come out of the second changing room looked up at me for a short while, then said, in a considered tone "You look beautiful, dear, beautiful!"

When her friend (maybe daughter) came out of her changing room in a beautiful blue dress, I started to avert my gaze, since her dress was completely unzipped as mine had been - but remembered that I was a lady and remarked how stunning she looked in the dress.

As the assistant zipped her up, she returned the compliments, adding "I really mean that - you look gorgeous in that dress!"

Mutual fan club time over, the assistant caught me as I was heading back to the changing room, and helpfully unzipped me, once more exposing my bra to the other customers.

The lady in blue simply carried on the conversation, telling me that I should buy the dress as it really suited me.

It was such an amazing experience, being treated exactly like the woman I felt I was, with no reservation, just us girls together - it was wonderful.

There were dreamy moments too, which live on in my memory - not sure if they were from the male or female side of me - the strongest is of the lady pulling back the curtain to come out of her changing room.

The heady mixture of wondering what her reaction would be - would she be shocked, surprised, something else?

The revealing of the unknown lady - how would I feel? Would I run away? Would I become tongue tied?

Her scent, as the curtain was drawn back, so powerfully feminine in it's clean, slightly floral fragrance, which, despite the subtlety, hit my nose and seemed to wash my face with its delicate perfume, like a well played string quartet, full of nuance and intrigue.

The halo of light around her face, which in turn, lit up with a smile I could feel the warmth from, her dark outlined blue eyes twinkling and inviting my own eyes into her boudoir, her lips playfully almost kissing the air, then breaking into the waves of a smile, her entire face and body animated in a tender dance of sisterhood.

The gleaming white of her bra against her slightly golden skin, contrasting with the shimmering deep blue of her dress, creating such a vision of loveliness that I was surprised not to feel libidinous, but as entranced by her beauty as much as the vision I was seeing of myself in the shop window, temporarily bolstered by the other ladies' wonderful comment.

Such sensational feelings - and so many more that it feels like I could write a book on that short encounter.

It's a wonderful thing, to have and enjoy such experiences, while some inner angel takes detailed notes so the whole thing can be replayed at will.

It's moments like that which keep me going through the not so wonderful stuff!

Happy changing!

Love Laura

I suspect that, about Hallowe'en especially, she gets a lot of men going to a fancy dress party. I don't think we are fooling many people anymore. I used to do a lot of shopping for 'presents' at Christmas (and the sales afterward) and either the sales assistant knew that while they were for 'her' that 'she' might not be far off. Either that or I impressed them with my knowledge of 'her' sizes. I would have a note to remind stupid, male me what those sizes were. Otherwise, there was always a 'birthday'.

Araminta.

Great experiences!  Thank you all for sharing!

I have been shopping at Torrid lately, and have had great experiences as well.  The SA s are very friendly and helpful.  Always suggesting other items I might like.

Even though I am in drab, they will suggest I try on my selections to make sure they fit, and I am happy with my choices.  It is such a rush to be trying on a dress or jeans in a dressing room!  BTW, just purchased cigarette pants that are adorable and so comfy!!
