For the last few months I’ve been trekking north to attend a CD/TG get-together every first Thursday of the month. When I go, I treat myself to an overnight stay and book a hotel for the night.
Last night I had a fabulous time at the get-together and afterwards retired to my hotel room. It had felt so nice to be out. So nice to feel pretty. So nice to be with friends.
Fast forward then to this morning. I’m ready to begin my day, feeling good about myself in the afterglow of the previous night, confident in my “Clara”. Out in the wild en femme? No problem, I got this. So I said to myself, “Self, you should go down to breakfast full femme”. Well by god, why not ? My sisters on CDH are often telling me,” stepping out is the greatest thing, you should do it.” And I agree, it is the greatest thing. So, head held high and chest forward, out the door and down the elevator you go Miss Clara. I’m going to march right in and have some of that complementary hot breakfast the hotel crows about. Yes sirree, Clara’s going out for breakfast, I don’t care who sees me!
Well, as it turns out, it’s a little crowded in the dining area, so I’m feeling a little cautious now. I circle the field a couple times trying to assess the crowd, see who’s there, where I might sit. I try some self-talk...”you look good girl...go in!” Confidence returns. Doggone it, it’s time. So in I go. I look first for the coffee. Can’t quite locate it right off. And then, as I scan the self serve breakfast offerings, I hear behind me a wee little voice, just a tiny little thing, but to my ears, clear as a bell, ”mama, that lady looks funny.” Before her mama could even say anything, I hear another voice, just as small but just as clear. It’s the little tike’s sister, “yes, she is.”
OMG, I’ve been had!
Yes, I admit, that rattles me more than just a little bit. So I grab the first thing in front of me, a glass of OJ, and hightail it out of there. I’m not gong to get my breakfast this morning I guess. Damn.
Then the question. What just happened here? Do I chalk that up as a loser because I was clocked by a four year old? Should I not be so bold? Do I not look quite as convincing as I’d hoped? No,no,no. Not at all dear sisters. While I wasn’t expecting to present as “funny”, I was definitely trying for “lady”. So yes, the four year old got it right. I guess that means I’m halfway there!
See you out there girls,
Clara
And now, as promised in the title of this post,

Hi Clara,
All I can think to say is "Life is sent to try us", Hang in there. Next time you'll get sweet smiles.
Marti xxx
Clara, children can be quite perceptive in part because I think they aren't saddled with all the extra baggage we as adults carry around in our heads.
The truth is, we are going to get made from time to time and we have to deal with it. I have once or twice, but it is been quite minor, as your episode was. I do wonder if sometime I'm going to have a more blatant abuse, but I hope I can deal with it when it happens.
Amy
You are right Marti, we always want to have the perfect reaction when the unexpected happens. But of course we rarely do. I suspect if I had turned around and given a smile, those sweet smiles would have been returned to me.
Don’t push the panic button!
C
Absolutely Amy. It was a child who said, “the emperor has no clothes”. Kids say the darnedest things.
Empress Clara
I think it is easier to pass at night than in the light of day. If you go out during the day you need to be extra meticulous with your makeup.
I always feared kids for the reasons that have been highlighted. Sometimes young kids just stare at any one and anything and it's not about your looks.
You scored good marks as both of them referred to you as a 'lady' and 'she'. I know it is a fright but, next time, carry on with your business if no one reacts. At least you got out of your room and went for it. It gets better and easier the more you do it so don't get put off.
Clara you were perfect. You are my hero. Big hugs ruby
Clara, I was going to send you a private message but no I'll do it publicly.
In early August I made my first business trip in a year and a half and I brought my Diane things with me. After an early dinner I got dressed and left the safety of the hotel room. Dress, heels, nylons, lipstick. Girls, I don't own a wig. I think I have enough hair to(someday)have a cute pixie.
Anyway, I walked into corridor of the hotel. Wow, was I nervous! Fortunately, I didn't see a soul. I was prepared to say hello, no matter who I ran into.
One of our sisters said I should have gone down to the bar and ordered a drink. Not this trip. Maybe the next time.
Clara, you have guts.
Diane
Clara I admire your courage and determination girl! All in all I would rate that a pretty successful outing. Children are incredibly inquisitive as they soak up the world around them, if anyone was going to take the time to be curious about you, it would be them.
"Lady", and "She"..... I would take those as good words of acknowledgment Clara, and they were not followed by derogatory remarks or snickering. Not bad at all hon, and its sure to strengthen you for the next time!
Stevie
That’s exactly how I took it Stevie. Not at all discouraged. To quote another great crossdresser, I’ll be back.
Clara (Arnold) Cross
For better or for worse, it’s for the moments like these that we do this thing we do. Guts? Naw. Just li’l ol’ Clara here.
❤️C
Oh Ruby, I don’t know about perfect. Perfect would have been coffee and a nice breakfast.
Thanks sweetie,
C
Thanks Angela. I’m gonna pull on those big girl panties right now. I’m getting my coffee next time for sure.
❤️C
You are right about that Mia. I thought I looked okay, but I didn’t spend a ton of time on makeup. Especially with a face like mine....perfect for the dark of night. As Miss Plumb would say, you gotta tick ALL the boxes.
Thanks Dear,
C
