I am currently looking for a satin prom dress / ball gown.

Due to my size and wanting something that covers the top of my right shoulder options are limited.

I spotted one in a charity shop a couple of weeks ago, green satin, floor length, nicely cut, would fit....was about to ask and spotted my running buddy in the same shop. So I chatted to her, left the shop without asking. I went back the next day...it was gone. Foiled!

Then on Tuesday this week, another charity shop with a stunning red ballgown in the window with a 2-foot  Christmas tree in front of it, clearly big enough, long enough, it would be perfect, except the shop was busy. The shop cleared and I went to ask. The assistant apologised and said they could not sell the dress as it was damaged and the Christmas tree was hiding a tear in it. Foiled again!

Has anyone else missed out on a beautiful item?

@annaredhead My wife shops at a discount (end of lines) clothing store. She has frequently had this happen to her.

You snooze, you loose.

Too many times, and not just crossdressing stuff! Now, I follow Angela's @ab123 advice and just buy it when I see it.

@annaredhead It's happened to me a number of times.   It ranges from seeing something in a store and losing it due to indecisiveness, to seeing something online and the vendor not shipping to the US.  I love the aesthetic of some Scandanavian designers!   It's certainly frustrating but there are still a lot of pretty clothes out there!

Indeed Anna, it taught me that if you see, love it then get it - however you do it. The times I have seen something and gone back to see it gone is a lesson learned.

Hi Anna,

I've missed out on numerous things that i would have loved to buy in a lot of charity shops, you see something and the shops are busy so you leave it and when you go back it's been sold, that's why when i saw my blue dress 👗 in the charity shop in Broadstairs i had to buy it then and there because i knew if i didn't it wouldn't be there for much longer,

90% of Cerys' clothes come from charity shops. We have loads within a 5 mile radius of where I live, including a couple of larger superstore style shops.

The past few days I have visited all of them.... I'm a UK 18 for tops and dresses, and 16 for skirts. Given the fit of some manufactures this can vary. Sometimes a 14 skirt will fit and a 16 dress will fit....
The past few days I've only managed 2 skirts, and one dress. Everywhere I go tops stop at 14 and skirts are either too small or too large. No end of really nice stuff, but none of it in my size!!!!
As for more formal wear, I did see stunning red velvet dress. It had a fit and flare skirt that was nice and short. It had short arms.... it was my size!!!!! I took it off the rail and went to try it on.... Someone had tried before me, AND BROKE THE ZIP!!!!!!!! They didn't just break it, they actually ripped it!!!! I was gutted. it would have been perfect for christmas day!

Anna -

I can't think of a situation similar to yours, sorry to hear you missed out twice.

What I do when I'm in a thrift (charity) shop if I see something I like is to hole into it while I continue to look. If I decide not to buy it or find something else I out it back. That way I don't miss out on the outfit. Nothing worse than finding something and thinking you can go back for it and it will be there. The same thing happens in regular stores - the outfit you want is there but only one in your size, you continue to look and when you go back it's gone. Nothing wrong with carrying something with you until you decide. Of course seeing someone you know does change things a bit, haven't had to deal with that yet fortunately.

Have fun shopping and hoe you find the gown you want.

XOXO
Suzanne

Not so much in shops, but online shopping. I tend to ... procrastinate sometimes when I've spotted something I like and have 'favourited' on Vinted or Ebay, trying to decide whether or not that particular item - usually shoes or boots! -  constitutes enough of a bargain. And of course, somebody else invariably thinks it is and beats me to it!

Leaving me kicking myself and rueing my impecuniousness. Sigh.

I found the most beautiful crimson gown today. My normal dress size, well made, beautiful length and detailing so I bought it. Got it home, tried it on without a corset....it's too tight, I can get it on but would not get forms on under it. C'est la vie.
