Soooo...I went out dressed for the first time tonight.

I needed to go shopping today, but also wanted to spend time in girl mode. I'm not quite ready for an entire shopping trip, so I decided to make an order online and go pick it up. I spent a while getting ready, complete with makeup, red nails, and DIY hip pads. When I was finished, I walked to the door of my apartment. I put my hand on the doorknob and stood for a few seconds. Gut check time. I wasn't worried about being in the car, but that first step out passing other apartments gave me pause. But I did it anyway. Hell, I'd taken the time to get ready and I looked good🙂 I walked to my car and brushed the snow off of the windows before getting in. I, Kendra, was really sitting there in my car. I enjoyed the drive to the curbside pickup spot, and when the employee came to the car, I told him to put the groceries in the back seat. I thanked him and drove out of the parking lot. Well, that wasn't bad at all!

I decided to grab dinner on the way home, so I went to Panda Express and ordered at the drive-through. I don't quite have a femme voice, but I did the best I could. I pulled to the window, paid, and got my food. The man at the window told me to have a good night and to stay warm, then I drove back home feeling very accomplished.

I had one more leg of the journey to finish as I carried the groceries and my supper back to my apartment. All went smoothly, and it felt so good to finally take this step. Granted, it was dark outside, but you gotta start somewhere. I'm excited about going out again, and I'm already thinking about where I'll go. Thank you to all of you for your support and this community, without whom it would have taken much longer to "level up."

Kendra

@kendrawhite You did what a lot of CDs do - baby confirming steps, so that we can take leaps later. Well done!

It's foggy outside right now. I am tempted to go out myself. 🤪

BTW, my older brother used to randomly open our front door and loudly say, "Hello world!" Yeah...

@harriette Yes, I imagine it felt like stepping on the moon the first time. "That's one small step for a CD, one giant leap for that same CD." 😆

@kendrawhite Congratulations Kendra. That’s a huge step in the right direction. I’d like to say it gets easier which in a way it does but it’s always that first step out the door that gives me butterflies.

@cdashley Thank you! I was a little surprised by that moment at the door, but I totally shouldn't have been. This really was a big step!

@kendrawhite Kendra, you did for you right now is a HUGE step.  Seeing as how it was such a good experience I am sure you will be doing more.  If you keep going down this path in a few years you will look back and think of this as a small baby step.

Enjoy the ride and be comfortable in yourself, go as far as you feel comfortable or as far as you want.

Great job.         Cassie

Congratulations! The first time out is a big step that becomes a fond memory, at least for me. Even today though, that moment at the door is still exhilarating. I hope you have many more safe, and fun outings, and im glad this one went well for you.

@kendrawhite Congratulations Kendra!   That's a huge first step.  I just kept adding things in small increments and every time my confidence grew a bit.  One thing that helped me is the realization that people are so into their own thing that they hardly ever notice others.   While being out authentically is huge to you, it doesn't even register on others.   Stay out there girl!

@lauren114 Thank you! I was thinking about how I would react if I were in public and saw someone who looked or sounded a little different. I'd just take note of it and move on- just like you said, the same thing most people will do.

Congratulations Kendra.

The first time out is something you will remember for a long while to come.

I was terrified on my first attempt, but after I got started I realised, as most of us do, that people are just busy getting on with their own lives.

I imagine you were buzzing afterwards, I know I was!

Kendra ... you are absolutely GORGEOUS. I've seen the photograph of you from that day. The main reaction from people you met must have been 'Wow!'.

What an adventure! Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

Reading it has really made me smile 🙂

You're an inspiration.

Granted, it was dark outside, but you gotta start somewhere.

And, right there, that's how it is done, Kendra.

My first trips abroad included sneaking out of our building, past our cameras, and wandering around in the middle of the night, when it was warm enough to wear a dress. No that I have more othes, I would love to do more of that.

Kendra, in one sense I suppose you could call this a baby step. But in another very real sense, this is huge! I am so proud of you for having the courage to do this. I have every confidence that this is the beginning of more great things to come.
Everybody, Kendra has posted a couple of photos of how she looked that night. You can also see one of them in the featured photos. I invite you to take a look at them. She looks fantastic!

@2bmadeline Thank you! It's good to hear people say that I'm passable. I know it's just self-doubt, and being passable isn't necessarily the whole point of dressing, but I wonder sometimes how I'm doing in that area.

Try not to worry so much about it. Being too nervous, seems to bring on attention to yourself. Think of how a shoplifter acts. Just go about your business and do what you need to do.

Trust me, it gets easier every time.  Congratulations.

@kendrawhite Yes; the take away advice here is that if you make an effort NOT TO LOOK NERVOUS as you stuff your bra and knickers with stolen makeup then no-one will pay any attention.

@ellyd22 3 things:

  • 1. Sorry about the Margarita
  • 2. Nobody's ever said that to me before
  • 3. I wish I had been there to see it

Regarding Thing 2.

What is it that no-one has ever said to you before?

If it's:

'Kendra, you make laugh so hard that I snort Margarita out of my nose'

... then I'm kind of not surprised.

Ellie x

(Edit: Regarding Thing 3: Believe me, you definitely did NOT want to see it. It's taken a surprising number of wet wipes to get the keyboard back into a semi-decent state).

@ellyd22 Yes, that is the Thing 2 to which I was referring.

Isn't it amazing that a joke told here in the US can cause liquid to shoot out of someone's nose in Europe almost instantaneously? What a time to be alive.

Fantastic, Kendra! I'm so pleased for you! It must have been such a thrilling, awesome experience. That "hand on the doorknob" moment is a huge one. I rarely get the chance myself, so congratulations to you on making the most of yours. You look great in your pics, too!

Kendra, You did it !!  Good for you.  And none of the "prep time," makeup, hair etc went to waste!!

The first time is the most terrifying, it gets better - much better - the more you get out.

Congratulations on your success...   Have fun..   Staci..

Well done Kendra, You looked good, felt good and it went good. It's always the step across the threshold and closing the door that is the hardest but once you start walking forward you can't stop and am sure you will be moving forward more from now on.

Inspirational stuff Kendra.
