As a complete beginner, today was my first trip to the shops to buy makeup. It was no big deal - just my usual trip to the supermarket but with the intention of buying a couple of additional items. Even so, I was incredibly nervous. I only bought a gel eyeliner and an eyebrow pencil but was relieved when nothing was said at the checkout. Hopefully it will get easier in future. One step at a time.
I began buying my own pantyhose since I was 13. At 17 I began dressing more androgynous and began buying short girl's short and platform wedges. Then at 18 I went fully femme and began buying everything. I never had a problem. In fact if anytrhing I got compliments on my look and what I was buying.
Quite an experience isn't it. Other than online shopping at first I then started to wander in stores getting smaller things like makeup, hosiery and such and with a few other needed items stroll up to checkout nervous and anticipating some embarrassing comments or gestures but no none of that happened the shock that I expected to happen didn't and I left the store happy and content. Kinda can't wait till my next time out. 🌹
One some of my earlier purchases , I would get ably a few things and go to a self checkout . I was nervous about being caught .
I have never had a problem purchasing anything that would be considered feminine. My terror about a salesclerk saying anything has never happened. Most busnesses are there to sell there product and I believe they could care less who buys them. My experiences at higher end clothing stores have been very positive. I have found a mastectomy store willing to help with lingerie items, a nail salon that is very friendly and a couple boutiques that help with dresses and such. I do these things in "male mode" I'm sure there is talk among them when I leave but over the years have I guess I have developed an attitude of I could care less. Hugs Ally
I have bought, tights, makeup, panty liners and sanitary pads, nail varnish and nobody said a word, although my heart was beating like a drum, every time it gets easier though. I don’t think anybody in these shops notices or cares what you buy, it usually is a production line in supermarkets anyway.
Happy Shopping
I started going out in 1978 or 9. I remember being nervous at the beginning. I always shopped a town or two away. I still do that momost of the time. Just recently I was picking up a fancy blazer from my cleaners and a friend of my wife and her daughter was there. We had a nice chat and when I told my wife she was so afraid that her friend would suspect something. I put her mind at ease and she calmed down. You will become more relaxed as time goes by. Life is Short, enjoy it.
Took me a few years but over the nervousness for the most part now
Big step for you, darling. Good going! Now just imagine how it was for me when I was younger and stating out. Back then there was no Amazon, internet or PC. I had to buy ever thing from the store.
You are right. It does get easier. I bought a pair outfights yesterday and didn't feel as nervous as I did just one day earlier. I think buying dresses and underwear will be the major hurdle.
Yes, it does get easier as you do it more and more and it becomes part of your routine rather than something unusual.
I'm coming to realize that when it comes to what you're buying, if they notice at all, people mostly make the easy assumptions - someone who appears male but has a variety of makeup, sanitary items, and a package of panties is probably shopping for a spouse or other significant friend. The same with clothes - especially if you aren't trying them on in the store. Jewelry and other accessories even more so.
When you do try things on, as long as you're discreet and don't make a scene about it, it doesn't draw that much attention. The folks who do notice can assume what they want - and that will range from lost a bet to costume party to the truth - and if it's the latter then you're an interesting person and that's about where it begins and ends.
It still makes me a little nervous from time-to-time, but it's a good nervous usually.
And I try to remember what Eddie Izzard says - "They're not women's clothes, they're my clothes. I bought them. They're mine."

Gel eyeliner is a big step to start on. I would recommend starting with a pencil liner and move up after you have the practice behind you. You will probably struggle with gel and might get discouraged. AS usual everybody is copying my past experiences. Sheeshk. Lol Mikayla
Yes, it will get better and you will be able to expand your shopping list. Enjoy your lady side.
I think gel eyeliner will be the last thing I get used to. Although I'm still not very good at using one, a pencil liner is much easier. I will wait until I've mastered that before using the gel again. It is too unforgiving with mistakes.
In the past I've bought hose/nylons and knee highs, no problems. I have purchased shoes, and trying them on (in the store) is always challenging, exhilarating, stressful and any other adjective you can think of! When I've done so I was wearing some form of nylon, and in one case while trying on a pair of "booties" (short womens boots), a woman came down the isle and saw what I was doing. She just smiled at me.
For about a year now I've been buying womens jeans, trying them on to, at second hand stores. Much easier and relaxed shopping. A few nights ago I was thinking about moving on to trying on blouses and dresses in the same stores, and eventually purchase something. I need to know what fits! 🙂 Admittedly that will be a turn on. I do have another pair or two of shoes to buys as well. The challenge then becomes, how to hide all of these items, as my wife does not accept this behavior. I do keep my booties (3 pair) out in the open.
Good luck Ladies!
