This past Saturday I went out in public for the first time. I wore a cowl neck sweater because I do feel self-conscious about my adams apple and thought it might help conceal it. Over the past couple of months I have been trying to purchase the various additional necessities that I might need to pull this off: purse, earrings and other jewelry. I had some errands that I needed to run and thought a good place to start my coming out adventure would be the mall. My first stop was at the local convenience store to get gas and a drink. I had a gentleman hold the door for me which was kind of fun. At the mall I walked through the various stores doing a bit of window shopping. At one point while looking and some women’s clothes, I had a clerk address me as "ma’am” and ask if she could help. I smiled and said no in my feminine voice I had been working on. I decide to buy something and once again when checking out, the woman running the cash register addressed me as ma’am. But then she wanted my phone number. I told her and it was not in the system so she then proceeded to put it in along with my name. So Adeline Johnston, is now official in their database. I'm glad I had decided ahead of time to use cash because obviously my credit card information would not match. Don't know if that has been an issue for others. During all this she never gave any indication that she suspected I was not a woman. I can’t begin to tell you how thrilled I was to have been able to pass. I’m sure that many of you who have done this for a while or who are in the process of transitioning would not find that particularly exciting. But as someone who has never been out in public, it was exciting. Since I was a child (I’m in my 60s now) I have felt like I was in the wrong body. To be able to go out looking on the outside the way I have felt on the inside was wonderful. I want to continue but as the weather gets warmer, high collar options will be less available and I worry that I will have a difficult time passing.

I'm so happy for you... hopefully I'll be comfortable enough soon to do more everyday things en femme!

Adeline : thank you for sharing your story. I can only imagine what your feelings were when all this was happening. I have never been out but I do hope to in the forseeable future. To listen to you girls talking about their emotional experiences makes me excited for how things transpired and the thrilling incounters that goes on , to going in stores, to shop and dining and interacting with people. That's something that for me would be quite nerve racking. But they say when one can get out it gets easier. I hope to experience such a memory and be able to tell all about my adventures being out. Enjoyed hearing your story and the best on your journeys ahead. 🌹

Hi Adeline! Welcome to CDH. Personely I don't know why CDrs' worry so much about "passing" Go on the internet and look up Walmart People. These creatures are obviously aliens....and we worry about how we look? Great article girl....look forward to hearing more from you.

That was a very wonderful story. My first time out was almost exactly like yours. The one thing that amazed me was that no one really seemed to notice or they just really didn't care. Also, as far as your credit card goes, you can just order an additional card on your account with a different user (your femme) name on it. It is a lot easier than carrying cash all around. When shopping, most of the time I go to the stores directly but sometimes I order online and this is where that 2nd card would come in handy also. Hope to hear more from you. XOXOXOXOX Danika

Thanks Danika. That is a great suggestion for the credit card. I will have to get that set up.
