First some highs:
So, yesterday I built up the courage to do some serious makeup shopping, I woke up early, put on a bra and panty set that I could wear undetected beneath my boy clothes, and headed of to Saphora. I wanted to be their when they opened with the hopes of less customer traffic. The employees were great! I was helped right away and stated that I was first looking for a few things, 1st of which was for my wife. After all, I noticed my wife was running low on some products, and I wanted to do something nice for her. Unfortunately, they didn't carry the her products as they were Nutrogena, and only available at cheaper outlets. Next, I came out and said I needed some cosmetics to achieve a natural, feminine look with beard concealer and all. They set me up with all the basics as I'm very inexperienced and not looking to attempt contouring and such. After almost an hour I left with a rather steep $140 tab, but overly excited enough to swing by the local CVS and pick up my wife's $40 worth of makeup in addition.
And now the Lows:
That evening I took my wife out to dinner, a show, and then surprised her with her makeup gift. She was very appreciative, but the powder was the wrong shade--a shade she had used in the past when she had more of a tan. To make matters worse I couldn't find the receipt. So, I decided to wait until the morning to see if I should tell her of my Sephora purchase.
The next morning she was in a good mood and I told her that I also picked up some brush cleaner at Sephora she can use. She was happy about this, but I told her there was a caveat: She can use it if she lets me use her makeup brushes. This didn't sit right with her, especially when I informed her that I wanted to use the brushes to wear makeup as part of my CD hobby(I recently came out to her about 4weeks ago). She wasn't happy at all, and rather upset. I assured her that I wouldn't use any of her makeup, this eased her enough to give me a brush she never uses. After she left for work with tension still in the air, I decided I needed some cheering up. It was time to practice w/ my new makeup. Things were going great until I got to my eyes. I struggle with eyeliner and in my fumbling I dropped my brand new eyeshadow pallet, breaking to bits the sparkly brow shade. Adding insult to injury, my heart sunk as I salvaged what I could of this new, pricy product. This morning wasn't what I had hoped for & now I think I'm in the market for some decent makeup brushes that don't cost an arm & a leg.
Ultimately, I managed to get somewhat decent makeup results that I'm okay with, and I feel happy now with my new makeup and new wig on, so much so that I wanted to share my experience. Thanks for reading.
Sorry to hear about your wife's reaction. All there is for that is time and openness. As for the palette, it cam be saved. If you watch things like the Makeup Breakup series on the Beauty News youtube channel you'll see them break and fix a ton of different makeup. so your palette is still salvageable.
And, that 140 bill from sephora? You should be thrilled LOL. To get "all the basics" from them for that kind of money is a true steal. Or maybe i just have expensive tastes. Either way i have to stay away from those places for just that reason.
This makes me want to open my kit and price everything in it. Its probably why i'm so poor. 🙂
Oh i forgot to ask, what did they recommend for you? especially for the beard concealer?
Well, I got a peach toned concealer for the beard shadow(learned you have to stick with warm tones for that). They used some scanner thing to match my skin tone for the foundation. I got a soft pink blush, and a natural brown eyeshadow palette with some sparkles in it. Plus a clear power to set the makeup. I already had some cheap lipstick & mascara from Walmart, so I saved there.
Brushes.....FYI you can often times get a set of inexpensive brushes to try at places like Target on clearance endcaps. Doing this you can decide also which ones you like best before you buy the pricier ones. Brushes at Sephora are pricey....but worth it! BUT def recommend trying out clearance ones first, so you can learn which you like. Esp when it comes to foundation brushes! Or maybe I'm just a brush snob, could be 😉
Ang: When it comes to brushes i always recommend Morphe. I spent 50 on a 15 piece synthetic set and they're great, dont shed and easy cleaning.
Roan: i will have to try that. Thanks!
Hello Roan; Thanks for sharing your story. Sephora is a great place for us "gurls", I prefer Ulta Beauty. It's good that you wanted to traet your qwife too. In defense of your wife, I can understand her reaction to you asking to barrow her brushes. I've heard it's not a good to share brushes, what if you had poison ivy or oak on your face and you used one of her brushes. Even after cleaning it, there could be the chance of passing it to her. Even though she appears to accept your fem life; it doesn't seem like she is ready to share in it, best to get your own. Just something to think about.
