Well this morning I decided to shave my legs. I bought a ladies shaver (5 blade) and it seemed to work pretty good, mowing down the forest of hair on my legs. I used Couchie shave cream and it worked pretty well, other than having to clean out all the hair several times. I think I got 90+ of the hair off (first pass). I will shave again tomorrow and look forward to keeping them shaved (at least until summer comes around and I need to wear my bathing suit (on my boat). I was looking for any advice on shaving and what works best. After shaving I put on pantyhose (sheer) and have been wearing them all day (under my pants) and the feeling is amazing. I just wish I had a dress and heels on but not yet (taking it slow, now that I just told my wife on January 1st).

I don't know what is best because I keep it simple.

There isn't a lot of hair left on my legs now because I used an IPL wand on them for about a year. What hair is left is stunted and slow growing. I then either dry shave or do it in a tub of warm water. No soaps, creams or oils.

The hair on the front of the shins and 6” above the kneecap are the toughest survivors.

@traci429 Congratulations on the first shave of legs.  Don’t forget to apply some nice lotion after a shave before the pantyhose.  I used to not shave them in summer as shorts season but now for years I keep them smooth all year long.

Santabought me ladies shaving cream and a 5 blade set of blades to keep my legs in a hair free state. I have shaved my legs frequently over the years and still marvel at the feeling sliding silky hose up my legs.

Very nice nothing beats smooth legs and since your wife knows about your dressing I would definitely recommend keeping them shaved smooth during the summer months so you can rock a cute little sundress.

@traci429 I started off shaving and when I peeled the hair off for the first time it as a revelation. I found that my skin would get angry red bumps from infected hair follicles that wasn’t too attractive so I follow up with polisporan to reduce the irritation. My whole body is mostly hair free now. To accomplish this I have had my legs, chest, and bikini lasered. You can get good results from laser if your hair is dark, depending on the type of machine. In any case you’re looking at several treatments over a period of time.

I use tweezers to pull hair out (ouch!) in certain areas, especially on my face. This can really help if you have a 5 o’clock shadow.

A quick shave in the shower usually takes care of hair that randomly appears. I have tried hair removal creams but they don’t  work for me.

Waxing strips are amazing for more sensitive areas, especially my arms and back of my thighs.

as others have mentioned use body cream or butter on your newly shaven parts. Shaved skin gets dried out and itchy if left untended.

By the way I read that you should avoid wearing stockings immediately after shaving as they can irritate the hair follicles when they have been freely trimmed. It may lead to more irritated follicles.

@traci429 Traci, it’s a great feeling isn’t it?  I now keep my legs hair free all the time, I gotten over people noticing….doctors and physiotherapists never say anything, and no one else even notices.

It’s so nice wearing shear stockings over fresh,y shaven legs and to feel soft Cotten dresses on bare legs in the summer.  But it’s addictive

hugs

@christineth True nobody ever comments.  The only comment I ever had was from my daugter in law who said my legs were smoother than hers. Laugh Cry

@traci429 Hi, I regulary epilate legs and arms when you first start it stings but each time again the roots get weeker and weeker and it becomes a pleasure (too see the hair gone) not a pain.  Don't do your belly as the regrowth really itches badly.  BTW I also do my face too.

@traci429 it's liberating isn't it , like a confirmation of your true self. I've been shaving my legs and other areas for some time now and if anyone's noticed they've not said a thing . One area I never bothered with was arm hair until this summer . I was always nervous about that bit once again no one commented. The feeling and look is wonderful .  Enjoy x

Hello Traci,

in my opinion the best part of shaved legs is being able to wear shorter dresses, so wonderful to feel the breeze coming under it. I just like to wear dresses having to put layers of panty hoses in the past was just too much work especially in a warm day, congratulations and don’t forget to moisturize a lot.

I am not great at shaving withought cuts.  I have used veet.  For me I don't nick my legs, arms, etc.  It seems to work great for me.

@karynn Yes, Veet is good for quick, big jobs, but I don't want to use it all of the time and there always seems to be some hair still standing.

I tried Nair only once. The smell was too obnoxious.

Hi Traci,

I like to use Skintimate shave gel when I shave my legs. It really helps with the cuts and helps moiturizes your legs as well.

Good for you, Traci! Relish that feeling (both literal and figurative)!

You may want to shave every other or even every 3rd day. Much like shaving your face too soon, stubbly hair can lead to more nicks.

I'm fortunate enough that my leg hair has always been very fine so it doesn't grow back very quickly (or stubbly) and I find I only need to really give myself an 'all-over' every couple of weeks. When I do I prefer to use creams like Veet or Nair (care taken on the nether regions!) and do a chin down full removal.

You do realise though Traci, that now you will never be able to have hairy legs again! Smooth, freshly shaved legs win every time! 🙂

My legs are virtually hairless these days. I only shave once a month or so. I shave my legs in the shower. No fancy gels, creams or razors. I use my normal razor and the suds from the shower get from the sponge. If you want (semi) permanent hairless legs use an epilator. I used one for about a year, and noticed that the hair wasn't growing back. This is due to the follicles being pulled out. Epilators are painful at first, but you get used to it, and the pain gets less as the hair gets less. Epilators are a lot cheaper than IPL devices.

@dazzler I've thinking of switching from shaving to an epilator.  How long do you have to let the hair grow out to start using the epilator?

@jessicacd289 Ideally, the hairs need to be about 3 or 4mm (1/8") to give the jaws a better chance to grip. A bit shorter might be OK. As time goes on there will be fewer hairs, and it gets easier.
Early on, I used to epilate and then shave. This made sure I got all the hairs, but it also exfoliated the skin, leaving my legs very smooth.

It'll become part of your life now. I shave mine at least 2 or 3 times a week.

So what about the summer time? Do people, family question why your legs are shaved? I was thinking of shaving my arms and chest but I think it’s too soon for my wife. She would notice. I’m worried in the summer that some family members would ask why my legs are shaved?

I haven't worried about summertime for over 35 years. Nobody cares. Most don't even notice. In all those years, and I wear shorts all year round, I have had maybe 5 people ask or comment. Two were just comments about my nice legs. I used to race bicycles, but haven't for many years, and even though I still ride a lot I just prefer shaved legs, as does my wife. If anybody asks just tell them you prefer it that way...no big deal.

Currently, I have my legs waxed monthly, but most of the time I just shave. I didn't like the chemicals, and IPL did not do much if anything. I wished I had done laser all those years ago.

@traci429 For what its worth my parents and the rest of my family haven't said anything.  I'm sure they noticed when I wear shorts in the summer.  My parents are very old fashion and set in their ways.  Both are in their mid/late 70s and have the 1960's mindset.  I'm actually shocked my father hasn't said anything about my shaved legs.

I don't shave my fore arm hair though.... Yet.

This is something that you have to consider.

One day last summer or so, I wore shorts when my daughter visited. As soon as she noticed my hairless legs she asked me about them. Fortunately, the conversation got redirected, but I will have to deal with this in the future.

Think of a a reasonable reason why you would shave, not only your legs but anything. "I shave them because... I don't like hairy legs." Will that be enough to satisfy anyone?

The best thing to say is a nonchalant "seemed a good idea at the time" then move on; I use that expression for all sorts of changes, cock-ups, and generally good, or bad, ideas.

For years before I even started to dress, I've used roller wax on my legs.  And more recently an epilator for the inner thighs, where it's too easy to bruise when pulling off a strip.  There's not a lot of hair left on my lower legs at all, nor the outsides above the knees, those areas I now do just with the epilator as well.  But the knees and at the front above them are tricky, they seem to be the slowest growing so there's always hairs that are too short for wax and too stubborn for the epilator, only moisturiser stops me feeling them.

The feeling of freshly waxed legs is sooooo lovely, especially in a light dress or skirt in summer, and in fresh bedsheets.  In terms of people noticing, while I can be a little self-conscious in male mode in smaller pairs of shorts when I'm freshly waxed, I never really worried about it.  It actually took ages even for my OH's teenage daughter to realise that I had the legs she wanted, and we've lived together for years now.

The area I really want to do regularly now is my arms ... only ever done them once, last winter.  But they're much closer to everyone's eye-level so more obvious to see, and that's a whole step up on the confidence ladder.

@finallyfiona thank you for the feedback. I need to shave my forearms if I’m going to wear anything sleeveless. I avoided sleeveless outfits because of my forearms. Now I might shave them (with my wife knowing) and then look into new sleeveless dresses. How exciting, another opportunity for a different style dress. - Traci

Nothing beats freshly shaved legs and traditional nylon stockings. The stockings feel electric on your legs and of course they look fabulous without hair.

I use a 5 blade razor and shaving cream applied with a brush; that shaving cream gets the best shave and it almost lasts two days. Applying moisturising cream after shaving leaves legs feeling wonderful.

If you're anything like me, you'll never go back! I don't just love my legs hairless, it's a must. Veet is just ok; it seems like a lot of work for a result that doesn't last any longer than shaving. Last spring, I started getting waxed. I go every 4-6 weeks and now my hair is much finer and sparser when it grows in, and my esthetician is awesome and totally inclusive. Gender affirming care, for the win!

I've kept my legs hairless for the past few years and no one has ever commented. My wife says that she's sure people have noticed, but it's just not a big deal. People know I'm a cyclist and motorcyclist, and likely chalk it up to that.
