I needed, and wanted some shoes. First I went to Goodwill. I started looking at the womens shoes, but most didn't have sizes and I'm not at that point yet where I'm willing to try then on.

So I bought my first two dresses instead. So a googling I went, and found a Payless Shoes near by. I pull up and see a sign that say 40% off, so I'm thinking to myself you go girl!

So Ive got the isle to myself where the size 13 shoes are. But I'm right next to the register, but I don't care. I find a pair of gray boots and a killer looking black pair of stilettos.

So I go stand in line and the next thing I know I'm looking at the ground and feeling insecure. Kind of scared even. After about a minute of that I tell myself, heck no! You weren't afraid 22 years ago when you married the most beautiful African-American woman in the world. You let all your friends go and started the most wonderful adventure of your life. And it's just about time to get rid of most of these (friends?) you've got now anyway. You already left your job to go to school to work in the medical field, and weren't afraid of that.

So I lifted my head up and smiled and just set my shoes on the register. I didn't say a word. Didn't try to say they're for my wife or anything.

So, a small victory, but I have to admit there's still something I'm very afraid of. How am I going to walk in these heels without falling and breaking my neck?

Love ya,

Blair

Small steps and a little practice in the living room and you'll be fine.

Oh Blair
Baby steps is what you are going to use until you get used to wearing heels
I remember when I was learning how to walk in heels I must have walked 25 miles in my house until I got so I could without making a fool of myself
Congratulations on your purchase at the Payless store.
I've found some incredible shoes at the Payless store where I live.
Sounds like you did too.

Congrats Roxy on the instore purchase, I haven't yet had a bad visit to payless. They normally have at least a little selection in the 13's and offer even more online. Like everything else new in life, practice. Good luck

Thank you, Roxy! Congrats at not only finding shoes in your size, but to overcome that hesitation and unsureness. You rock! As for walking, practice is key but I have no doubt you will be rocking walking in those heels!

Hugs, Michelle

Hi Roxy,

I was "caught" trying on a pair of booties at a store once.  It was exciting to me, and the woman just smiled.  It is pretty obvious (I believe) that I am looking for me, as I'm usually wearing a pair of womens shoes/boots already.

This is one of the more exciting things for me, as I'm also usually wearing some form of hosiery as well, and it is just a big turn on that (a) someone will see me and (b), someone will see my stocking feet!

Love and hugs,

R

The story continues. The boots fit ok, but the shoes were way to big. So I took them back, and actually tried on a pair of shoes and another pair of boots. I bought both. I just said to heck with it and tried then on. They fit great. Silly, but I'm really proud of myself.

My fave Tan Ankle boots are a 3” heel (just under) but today a pair of new Black Ankle Boots (i have a thing for Ankle Boots) arrived in the post. Heel is about 3/4” bigger than my Tan Boots. Difference in the way i walk in them is amazing. Heel seems better cantered for my foot, my step is smaller and pace a tad slower.

You gotta love a good pair of Ankle Boots, my guilty pleasures is watching women in Ankle Boots walk

🙂

Once you find your styles and sizes the rest is cake. I need a size 9 if it has a rounded toe, I prefer no back as then they look too large and I too love the click-clack of heels on a hard surface especially if its me that is making them!

Love those boots!  Any femme shoe really, and low profile loafers.

Stay confident, keep trying, you'll be okay.

I used to be scared too, to the point that i would try on shoes so quickly in the hopes that no one would see me. Then one day, a Sales Associate did see me...and I was shocked that she complimented me on a pair I was trying on, then she helped me find other options and gave me advice on what was working and not working fo me. After that, my fear disaapeared and I've met countless Sales Associates who don't judge me and genuinely help.

I try to be confident when shopping, and honest that the shoes/clothes/etc are for me. There are a lot of women that appreciate a guy willing to push the gender boundary.

I need to go shopping!

So right Lea!

I think we make a bigger thing out of this than other people do!

It's so easy to go out and find shoes.  I even look when my SO is around at this point!  I've tried some on when she was in the same store, not along side me, but I've put on a pair and walked up and down the isle, with others around.  It was no big deal.

It's fun and exciting for me now!

I'm on the hunt for a pair of red suede boots/booties.  That will be fun!

Hello Roxy/Blair; Thank you for sharing this story and congrats on what I assume was your first shoe and boot purchase. I commend you on using your life's events to reaffirm your courage, you are extremely brave.

I hope you learned how to walk in heels since you posted this. If not; take small step strides, heel touching the floor first then toes, and slight foot crossover the other. Of course, don't forget stand straight and tall with shoulders back.

I also bought my first 2 pairs of shoes at Payless. The leader of my CD/TG support group meetings went with me for support and I tried on the shoes to get the best fit. However a few days later, I took one pair back for a smaller size(open toe and closed toe size differently to each other). When I was trying on the smaller size, a typical male athlete came around the corner at the far end of the aisle along the back wall. I froze a little and was worried about an encounter. Sigh of relief, he went back the direction he had come from. I finished up and left with my exchange. Had that been now and not a year ago, I would have continued shopping. I'm so sad they closed.
