(Author's note: first real attempt at putting these feelings to verse, the words came to me in the middle of the night, dressed in a heather top and long flowing skirt and feeling at ease though I know no one else will see.  What does it mean?  Does it mean anything?  Anyway without further ado:)

Madness in a World

There’s madness in a world
That gives half a species wings
And tells them not to fly
Tells them to be content to stay grounded
While their counterparts
One perfect chromosome apart
Soar the skies with ease
Unhindered
I scribe my wings in warpaint
At the corners of my eyes
No one sees
No one cares
But I

I’ve learned to hide
I’ve learned to survive
To eke out life
Never seeing
Never being seen

There’s madness in a world
That gives half a species teeth
And expects them not to bite
Expects them not to gnash and claw and brutalize
While their counterparts
One perfect chromosome apart
Lie ravished by their spite
Victimized
She cries in the night
Forlorn sobs and anguished cries
No one hears
No one cares
No one

She’s learned to cope
Let numbness conquer hope
To eke out life
Never healing
Never being heard

There’s madness in a world
That makes half a species from a whole
And tells them it’s the status quo
Tells them it defines their lives and their souls
We’re counterparts
One perfect chromosome apart
Shell-shocked by the world
Unfeeling
Yet bursting at the seams
We know there must be a better way
But no one tries
No one dares
No one dreams

We’ve learned to hide
We’ve learned to survive
To eke out life
Never seeing
Never being seen

Indeed, most of the good things in life happen when the world at large is on recharge.

Interesting Val, a bit of a downer. Maybe come up with a follow up.

nobody cares
we all here (at CDH) care

Nobody dreams
dreams are all that gets me by

Never being seen
want to be seen (and accepted)

Guess what I am saying, for me anyway, you describe so much of the way things were for me. the lines I came up with here are where I am now and hopes for where I am going.

Not to be argumentative, but art itself is a bit of a downer.  Otherwise it ends up being... well, pop music.  And seriously, can we just end pop music?? XD

I'm simply giving voice here to perfectly valid feelings that are common to the community from my understanding, and certainly feelings that are valid to me.  Yes, there's a darker side to them.  And yes, there are exceptions to the general rule.  But does that make the feelings invalid?

For the record, I've been called out in this community (and rightly so) for honestly criticizing popular songs that the community as a whole has latched onto.  So I get it.  Be your own person.  Have your own voice.  But don't let that voice drown out the voice of others who have every bit as much to say as you do.

My two cents anyway.  God bless!

There are I believe genuine people out there who will always support you.

Conversely you’ve got fair weather friends who will only use you then abandon you.

I’m reminded of a little poem

Friends may come and friend may go, and friends may Peter out you know, but we’ll be there through thick and thin

Peter out and Peter in

Interesting... I've never heard of this poem before now but I'm reminded of a verse from a song I wrote close to a decade ago called Estuary:

"If I never live, friendships come and friendships go
And if I never love, my ache and loneliness you know
And I'm no fool who'd lie to you, although these things may mean the world to me, my king,
I want to give you everything."

Very much so, I'm a multimedia artist and have adapted hymns to my peculiar style of folk-rock.  I'll shoot you a friend request as I'm not comfortable sharing my drab ego with the world at large but if you're interested I'd love to share with you.

- or how about this little ditty:

"these are new friends, these are old,
these are silver, these are gold"

Which a spiritualist once told me. It turns out to be a slight corruption of the start of a poem by Joseph Parry.

The version I heard was "make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold."

yes, that's the one, but I'm so used to 'my' variation, I don't think it'll ever change 😉

We are born into this world untainted,

We are born into this world unknowing,

We are born into this world with no prejudice,

We are born into this world with innocence,

Then the madness in a world takes over....

Val, I understand where you are coming from Sometimes expressing the downer side of life, just getting it out there is helpful.
I guess I am just expressing that when I read it while I could feel the sorrow it expressed that my head went almost immediatly to CDH and how everyone here has helped me.

Aptly spoken.  I'm unsure if those words are yours or someone else's but bravissimo!
