Who is there beneath all these women's clothes
The man inside hopes no one truly knows
For him to be seen as a man in drag
Would cause his spirit and his soul to sag
But to reveal the real woman inside
Would be to finally agree to decide
Not to conceal his struggling female self
And to put his fears back upon the shelf
That he would again be held up to scorn
For being the girl for which he was born.
His beauty, outfits his makeup and pearls
Have made him always be one of the girls.
And when she lights and smokes her cigarette
She feels far more the lovely woman yet
And won't allow the public to judge her
But will permit her feelings to nudge her
Into the sweet and pretty world she's sought
Despite all her fears that she might be caught
Trying on a skirt makeup wig and blouse
And yearning to venture outside her house
Where she hopes to attract the public's eye
And will smile sweetly at the passers by
And pray that they will truly understand
Beneath the women's clothing is a man
Who has struggled for years to be a girl
And is now ready to enter the world
As the woman she's always prayed to be
And is prepared for all the world to see
The girl inside that she has now become
When in her soul he and she are now one.
No greater gift could I have ever felt
Than to accept the future I was dealt.

Lady Veronica
Dear Lady Veronica,
My life with poetry has extended out to 32 years of teaching English at a prestigious private school north of Boston. I made sure each line was the Shakespearean 10 beat line, and the rhyme scheme fit perfectly. I'm glad it was an inspiration to you. (Which means literally to "breathe life into" someone.) I'm thrilled it so moved you. Thank you Veronica. I would like
I think your poem is beautiful. I've never rely thought of myself as being in drag....but the way you defined it opened my eyes to another point of view.
Truly an inspirational poem. Thank you for sharing it with us.
