Years ago, in the mid-eighties, I spent a fair amount of time living in hotels near Boston (Framingham mostly) and on a Sunday I would buy the Boston Globe almost exclusivley to use the TV guide. The paper was huge, perhaps 4" thck when folded in half. I used to shake all the sections out on the bed and seemingly hundreds of fliers would drop out and if I was lucky, one of them would be the TV guide.
I was just musing today and wondering: Is the Boston Globe newspaper on a Sunday still as big?
Hey Becca,
I grew up in the Boston suburbs and my folks subscribed to the Boston Globe. I know what you mean about how thick the Sunday paper was. With the increases in paper prices and many brick & mortar stores folding (hence no ads) along with an increase in virtual ads the size of the Sunday issue has shrunk. It’s still good sized but not as large as in the past.

This brings back some memories. My mother was an avid crossword puzzle fan. But, the most amazing thing was that she would do them in INK. You could go through a whole puzzle book, which was 1/4” thick then, and find maybe 1 or 2 scratched out letters. The only kind of books that she ever bought were Hard or Difficult.
Back then there were crossword contests in the Sunday papers. It wasn’t unusual for her to send in puzzles from our hometown Toledo Blade, the Detroit Free Press and the New York Times. While we are alike in many ways, that’s one thing that I never really did.
