If anyone is interested in the above treatment for an enlarged prostate, I've just had it (yesterday) and can tell you all you need to know.

@rebeccabaxter Holep surgery has an 80% success rate, so I hope you are one of the lucky ones.

May you recover quickly. 💗

@harriette So far so good, Harriette. Worse thing so far is a sore throat from the intubation; so not bad, generally.

Ok Becca, I’ll jump on here and just say that I hope to never need to have one of my girlfriends tell me “all I need to know about prostate surgery.” Thank you though😘

That said, here you are right back on CDH -so I trust everything went well and that you’ll soon be back prancing around in your pantyhose like a good girl!👩‍🦳❤️

@gracepal Absolutely, already here—although somewhat tired from the GA.

@sailor2000

Megan,

I have had trouble with my waterworks since November 2023. I'll not go into the whole story but ended up with urine retention and two separate trips to A&E -- what you Americans call ER -- to have a catheter installed, the second time was for two months; horrid affair.

After having the catheter removed the second time, I had a flow check and it was pretty dire. The urologist said I should have HoLEP surgery to clear it out and in the meantime I should continue taking Finasteride and Tamsulosin (which at this time I had been taking for two months).

From the UK NHS website:

Finasteride is a type of medicine called a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.

It works by stopping testosterone (a sex hormone) turning into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT can cause your prostate to grow bigger (benign prostate enlargement).

Finasteride stops DHT being produced and this helps shrink your prostate.

Tamsulosin relaxes the soft muscle around the urethra and it worked on its own for about three months but then stopped, presumably because my prostate kept growing.

The surgery option might be more difficult in the States depending on your healthcare and although I did opt for the HoLEP option, I found that the Finasteride, combined with Tamsulosin, made my urination practically normal again. Finasteride takes six months to really get going but I had some result after two months.

If surgery is not an option or you'd rather not do it, then I suggest getting a prescription for Finasteride and Tamsulosin; it worked for me until my surgery appointment. I no longer need to take either drug.

@rebeccabaxter

Glad to hear you're on the mend Becca.  Good to see you back on CDH.

Finasteride also is used for hair loss and improve hair growth.  And it can cause some breast growth.  It's frequently used in MTF HRT.

Becca -

Welcome back and glad to hear you're healing okay.

Thank you for the information. I suffer from BPH and am currently taking Tamsulosin and going to physical therapy for pelvic floor exercises. I see my urologist in February to see where we go from here. Finasteride could be an option before thinking of surgery.

XOXO

@cdsue Finasteride worked for me, the tamsulosin was good at first but then just stopped doing anything. It was fortunate I'd already got myself on Finasteride (when the signs that tamsulosin was failing)  so the catheter was not in for as long as it might have been; it's a shame I had to diagnose myself and ask for the drug I really needed.

As I've said, Finasteride takes quite a time to get going as the prostate won't shrink quickly, and six months is the usual delay before peak efficacy.

Hi Becca,

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I hope everything comes out ok.... from now on! Horrible pun I know, but I mean it. I hope you have some ice cream for the sore throat.

Hugs,

Autumn

@augustvaliant Thanks Autumn, love the pun. And yes, it seems to be doing that ok at the moment (bloody sometimes, but absolutely no pain whatsoever, none; weird).

Sore throat went after a few days.
