There are many folks who have an impact on our lives. Parents, teachers, mentors, friends..all have significant influence on each of us. This Friday, we take a day to recognize and honor some incredibly special people. These people-some friends, some family and some complete strangers to us-took time from their loved ones to perform the greatest service -risking their lives (and in some cases sacrificing their own) to protect us and our freedoms from those who would do us harm.

Some were volunteers; others were drafted; some were eager while others were reluctant; but each of them is owed the gratitude from the rest of us who reaped the harvest fertilized by the blood and sweat of those who gave of the best years of their lives.

We call them Veterans-people who had long service or experience in a particularly dangerous occupation. IT is not just those who served in combat who sacrificed. For each soldier or sailor or pilot in the combat theaters, there are dozens of others who do the maintenance and logistics work to keep them supplied and ready to fight. And even their day today training involves potentially fatal consequences. For those who DO go to combat, their souls are forever scarred by the horrors they are forced to witness. As tragic as their injuries can be, the wounds are not just physical, but emotional and spiritual as well.

We can never repay them-or their loved ones-for the sacrifices they made and continue to make day in and day out, but we CAN do them the honor of recognizing their service on this day of honor that goes by many names around the world-Veteran’s Day, Armistice Day, Remembrance Day. Please take time this Friday, November 11th to thank any serviceman you know or see for their service and if possible contribute some of your time and/or money to any of the many organizations that provide services to military veterans and their families.

Hope you have a memorable and meaningful Veteran's Day this Friday and if you remember , take a few minutes at 11am local time-" the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"-to remember our Vets!

Below is a poem I saw online tonight that reflected the way I feel about our veterans. I hope it touches your heart as it touched mine.

In Your Honor

Unselfishly, you left your fathers and your mothers,
You left behind your sisters and your brothers.
Leaving your beloved children and wives,
You put on hold, your dreams-your lives.
On foreign soil, you found yourself planted
To fight for those whose freedom you granted.
Without your sacrifice, their cause would be lost
But you carried onward, no matter the cost.

Many horrors you had endured and seen.
Many faces had haunted your dreams.
You cheered as your enemies littered the ground;
You cried as your brothers fell all around.

When it was over, you all came back home,
Some were left with memories to face all alone;
Some found themselves in the company of friends
As their crosses cast shadows across the land.

Those who survived were forever scarred
Emotionally, physically, permanently marred.
Those who did not now sleep eternally
'Neath the ground they had given their lives to keep free.

With a hand upon my heart, I feel The pride and respect; my reverence is revealed
In the tears that now stream down my upturned face
As our flag waves above you, in her glory and grace.
Freedom was the gift that you unselfishly gave
Pain and death was the price that you ultimately paid.
Every day, I give my utmost admiration
To those who had fought to defend our nation.

Donning the uniform of the defence forces of one's country is a pledge to the people of that country that, should it be required I will lay down my life in defence of all that we, as a nation, hold dear. For some that pledge is called in and their name is added to an honour roll, memorial or plaque. Others return from their service forever changed, some for the better, some forever scarred or maimed. Each and every one deserves our respect and acknowledgement.

Tomorrow I will stand with others who have served. Some whose footsteps I followed in, some who followed in mine. I am proud of my service and the right I now enjoy to be who I am. That right is something we should never take for granted for it is so easily lost.

Lest we forget.

I have trod the same path that many of my fellow Vets have.I was drafted in May of 1968 and served in VietNam with the 82nd ABN Echo company Recon and it feels wonderful to have a complete stranger walk up to you and thank you for your service.Ladies ,please do so and also ladies ,please dont forget the nurses who served at that time, they rarely get the recognition they deserve. When you see a vet thank them, take it from one who knows,it feels great.

Dear Cyn, just got back from the Remembrance Day ceremonies over at the Royal Canadian Legion and it was very touching. Still a couple of the old guard from WW II there, not many left, God rest their souls. I have a deep tie to this as I was born in England and both my parents were kids during the war and both my Grandfathers served from start to finish. By God's good grace both came home but were changed men. My Dad's Dad was a Commando and didn't see his family for the whole deal. My Dad was 6 when he left and 13 when he came home and wanted to hear the great war stories and all he said was " you don't want to know". So on this day I say thank you to my Grandfathers and every other person who has gave of themselves so we may enjoy the lives and freedoms they gave us.

God bless each and every one of you and Lest We Forget.

PS. Please forgive any spelling mistakes, it's hard to type with tears in my eyes.

Heather
