Another Christmas, and another visit by the Big Man in the Red Suit...
In 1966 the must-have toy for boys was Action Man, the UK version of America's GI Joe. I was overjoyed to find him among my Christmas presents, and he sparked my imagination for many a game of thrilling adventure.
My crossdressing gene had already kicked in two years before, ignited by clumsily pulling on a pair of my mum's tights. So it was no real surprise to me when I began to wonder what my beloved Action Man would look like in women's clothes. Unfortunately my needlework skills were not great, and my attempts at making him a skirt were a total flop. Likewise with cutting up a pair of my mum's old tights to make him a pair of stockings. The scraps-of-wool wig looked like a badly made mop. But the idea was there.
A year or two later I tentatively asked my mum about getting a Barbie doll for Christmas, so that my Action Man could have a girlfriend. Barbie's clothes would never have fit him, of course. I never got the chance to try them on him anyway; Barbie dolls were for girls.

hi Jacqueline. I was never allowed anything girly either but was lucky to have family friends we would visit and I would play with their daughter and her Barbies whenever we visited. Don’t think my parents liked it though, we would always get sent outside and told to leave the Barbies inside
