I am in the market for a shape wear garment, as to help conceal a few extra pounds I have around my tummy and waist. Do any of you ladies have experience with shape wear garments such as corsets, cinchers, etc. that worked well and did not cost a fortune? Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Kelci;

I have experience of both shapewear and corsets and have found that corsets control my extra pounds far better than shapewear but take perhaps a little more time to get used to.  i have been buying and wearing waist training corsets from CorsetDeal ( http://www.corsetdeal.com/) where they often have doscounts and offers.  I have usually managed to get the corset i want for just $30.  With the wsit training corsets i have managed to take 4 inches off my waist without really trying wheras with shapewear i looked a little slimmer but never lost and inches and not as shapely as i do with a corset.

Thank you Roxandra. I was hoping I could maybe get a corset at Target or Wal-Mart. I have heard some good things about cinchers. However, no matter which direction I go, I don't have the faintest idea of determining measurements to get the correct size.

Usually, you would go for a size that creates a wiast 4 inches less than your existing waist.  For example if you have a 36 inch waist then go for a size 32.  With CorsetDeal, they help you by giving you the sizing options showing the existing waist and the reduced waist in each case.

I am going to chime in here too. I have had slimmers and cinchers and etc.... If you are going to really try to pull it all in, it is the corset all the way. I have not found one that doesn't take two people to get you into. Now I haven't looked at Roxanne's link, heading there next, or tried a training corset.

I do have a great waist cincher with no laces in back and hooks in front from France off of Amazon, I will try to find the name and pass it on. The only problem is to really get the gut in is get one a smaller size than the chart suggests. It is also a wrestling match to get the hook together on the middle part.

Long story short, find a partner and go with a corset unless someone can magically hlp me pull and tie laces behind my back.

Looking forward to feedback on this one!!

Thank you Codille! Yeah that sure sounds like a lot of work. I am thinking about going to a local department store and trying on several different options. From what I gather, you can find a lower price on-line such as Ebay, but I am afraid of the hassle if the item comes in and does not fit properly.  Hugs

A corset is definitely the way to go. Quality ones can be a bit pricy though. And requires a second pair of hands.

Waist cinchers from the mega marts do a decent job. Definitely go 4-5 inches smaller The issue I found with these - they leave a line if you wear tighter clothes.

Also entertain a one piece body suit with reinforced stays.

And don't forget control top pantyhose.

Well, I have to admit I've never tried a corset - mostly because of the cost and especially because I don't have a lady's maid to help lace me into one. That said, they've always fascinated me.

I do use cinchers, and am partial to the Rago Model 821. With a 45" male waist I can squeeze into a 2x - 34 size if I fasten it first and then pull it up to my female waist. That, admittedly, is pretty darn tight and I wouldn't think about it for wearing all day. I have a larger one - a 6x 42 - that fits comfortably and gives me a little curve, but doesn't compress me like there's no tomorrow. Somewhere in-between would probably ideal for me right now. Since I lean toward the frugal side of things, I'm sure I didn't pay too much for either - probably not more than $40 each, and knowing me, less, but can't remember where I got them. A quick internet search shows them for sale in a bunch of places.

Hi Codille;

There is definitely a knack to getting into a corset single handed.  I do it by drawing the strings behind my back with the right string in the left hand and vice versa for the left string so that the strings cross behind one's back.  Then, starting at the top, breat out as far as you can and draw the top strings as tight as they will go.  Next, breath in to pull in the lower abdomen and pull the lower strings as tight as they will go.  Alternate between the upper and lower abdomen strings in the same way until you cannot get the corset any tighter.  This works well for me and when i do have the help of another pair of hands, the difference is not very much at all.

I think based on practical reasons I am going to co with a cincher or a similar shape wear garment. It seems as having a corset is a full time job.

Love reading all these replies-i'd love to try a corset but don't think I can manage the solo fastening!  Perhaps one day someone will be around to help me into it so I can get this 40 " waist down some!

Though it looks difficult, there are many youtube videos that can help you lace up a corset yourself. I have yet to get mine, but I have found that the videos from orchard corsets to be informative.

I'll let you know how I go with mine when I get it later this week. (I can't wait)

Not too pricey. I got one from Orchard Corsets for less than 50 bucks, and they have a lot of informational youtube videos. They sell steel boned corsets, which really shape you.

It's on the way, so I'll let folks know how it goes. It might be a few weeks though.
