I have been shaving my upper chest for a month. I have been getting a rash that resembles small pimples between my breasts. Does anyone have any advice how can treat this and avoid it in the future?
Recently, I am also getting a similar rash on my arms where I have also begun shaving?
I don't want to stop shaving, but these rashes are not attractive. Any help would be appreciated.
MacKenzie
I've been using Veet on my chest and arms. The only time I get the rash on my boobs is when it gets hot and I get sweaty, but that has always been an issues that's plagued me.
I hear waxing may also be an alternative, but I haven't tried that. Gotta do my back one day so I can wear that cute strapless dress I bought.
MacKenzie you might already be doing this but make sure you have a different razor for your chest than the one you shave your face with. I find the best place to shave the chest area is in the shower as the hot water relaxes the follicles and softens the hair.
Avoid any lotions, oils or creams after shaving though as they'll clog open pores and can cause the pimpling.
Waxing is the same - only specific post-waxing cream for 24 hours otherwise there is an increased risk of infections (pimples).
I epilate my arms, legs and chest/tummy areas. I now only shave my chest for that last minute smoothness when I go out. Epilating is the same process as waxing - pulling the hairs out rather than cutting them off. There is now little hair on my arms and legs and what there is is quite fine. I go two to three weeks between epilating sessions. My chest hair is much thinner but I do it about once a week unless I've shaved, in which case I have to wait a few days for there to be enough to yank out 😉
I have had the same problem on my nether regions and thighs. Do not shave against the grain and use a single blade razor. Mutiblade razor cause the hairs to be cut below the skin. This creates a problem when the regrowth can not find a path out. Also shaving against the grain can cause nicks that at first are not a problem to fester and become infected.
I'm not an expert, but here is my advice based on what works for me for doing my legs, chest, stomach and shoulders (and I have lots of dark, coarse hair):
- Use a fresh, clean razor. Rotate your replacement blades or disposable razors often.
- Spend 5-15 minutes in a hot bath or shower before shaving to prep the hair. Don't go too long though, as its counter-productive. What I do, is get a nice warm bath going. Get in and relax for 15 minutes, then start shaving.
- Do a fairly small area at a time. You want to use good shaving gel or shaving lubricant. Rinse the shaver frequently. And rinse the shaved area (and re-heat your body) in the tub frequently as well.
- For normal shaving, shave in the direction of your hair growth. If you want a real close shave for going out and about - first shave in the direction of your hair growth, and then you can repeat against the grain. Use a light touch and done push it hard against your skin.
- I am a huge believer in exfoliation. Use a loofah (get a cute color pink or purple!) and exfoliate everything while still in the bath. Rinse.
- Then I get in the shower, so I can do a clean wash with the loofah again.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry off (with a clean towel).
- Apply lotion to everything you shaved. I use a mild scented lotion, but if you are sensitive use an unscented lotion.
- Air dry (helps to be under a ceiling fan)
- Then get dressed in your cute outfit!!!
Your body should get used to your routine. When I am shaving regularly (daily or every other day) I have few if any of the horrible red bumps (ingrown and/or infected hairs). If I stop shaving for awhile or don't do it frequently, the first several times are the worst. Some women are lucky and don't have many problems with the evil red bumps. Others like me do.
Like I said, I'm no expert, but this works for me.
Best of luck!!
Most of what i have read in the above posts are similar to what i do. I do keep it simple. Shower first.....partially dry off.....and rub Sorbelene on area to be shaved, Sorbelene is a cheap moisturiser that helps me a lot when i shave. I shave my entire body about every eight days or so. And i shave EVERYWHERE there is hair. Takes an hour to do a good job. Its become routine for me now and always feels wonderful when all hair is gone.
Almost forgot...i swear by the 3 bladed razors, works a treat for me. I rinse blade frequently. Blade lasts about two body shaves on me, i also use it for a clean shaven face too.
