Today my thoughts went wandering as oft they seem to do-
I pondered how my life has changed-the old turned into new.
Or better said the outer shell like onions has been peeled
To let the hidden soul inside to finally be revealed.
For oh so many years the girl inside me was repressed-
Her feelings, hopes and dreams could only briefly be expressed.
She dreamed of running through the fields, her sundress gently swirled
As finally she had her chance to be out in the world.
The wind blew through her brunette hair which hung beyond her shoulder
And every step she took she became just a little bolder.
She’d always hidden any sign that hinted of her thoughts,
But now she contemplated what she’d do if she were caught.
Would she continue lying about who she really was?
Or –asked why she was dressed this way-would she say it’s because
I can no longer hide who I was always meant to be!
And now it’s time this prisoner can finally be set free.
The shackles that had bound me to the earth were truly broken
And feelings I had ne’er expressed could finally be spoken.
And tears of joy ran down my cheeks as I recalled the years
Of hiding in a lonely room so frozen by my fears.
I’d lost so many precious days to worry about how
My family, friends and coworkers would treat me. But for now
The folks I’ve told have shocked me with their affirmations of
The female that’s emerging and let me know that I’m loved.
But there’s no use lamenting, need to look to future days
There’s so much more to do as life enters a brand new phase.
I want to try and do my best to help guide others who
May find themselves on journeys of discovering themselves too.
A sisterhood and group of truer friends you’ll never find,
To help you reconcile your body, feelings, soul and mind.
For each and every member here is special and unique
And each of us is walking both in valleys and in peaks.
So if you need a listening ear or shoulder you can cry on.
I hope you know I’ll always be a friend you can rely on.
You’ll never walk this arduous path so lost and on your own
For here at CDH , we’ll walk beside you ‘til you’re home!
