I'm curious. I've just been reading an article about Justin Timberlake being banned from driving in New York State and a couple of questions come to mind.

If he is banned in NY, is he banned in all US states?

If I lived in one state, would I have to take another driving test if I moved to live another state?

@rebeccabaxter My thought is ...

Why would it matter to him? I'm sure he either won't care and will drive anyway (he broke one serious law, why not more) or he'll just make sure he has a driver (he can afford it) until the suspension is over.

Yes, he would be banned from driving everywhere.  US States have shared driver records for years.

If you have a valid license and move to a different state, you may have to take a written test and a vision test.  It depends on the state.  I'm not aware of any states that require a behind the wheel driving test under normal circumstances.

Not all states have fully reciprocity with other states on driver's licenses.  Michigan, for example, does not fully reciprocate or exchange driving records.

Yes that's true.  But drunk driving is a serious offense.  And Michigan does have reciprocity for DUI/DWI offenses.  I know this is true because a good friend got a DUI in California and lost his license for six months.  It happened just before he moved back to Michigan.  Michigan DMV refused to issue him a license until the six months was up.

I think the takeaway is getting a DUI/DWI in any state jeopardizes your ability to drive in any other state.

Interesting question. I know that many years ago states started sharing information on commercial drivers licenses. Truck drivers would get licenses from different states to avoid getting their licenses suspended for too many points (in the states you get points for traffic violations - speeding, et) and depending on how many points they had would depend on what license they would give. They went to a CDL license that limited them to being able to have only one license from one state. Don't know how they managed to have more than one with residency requirements but they did. I think it was back in the 60's.

I recently moved from one state to another and transferred my license without a written or driving test.  All I had to do was fill out an application, take a vision test and pay.

As for Justin...I'm guessing it will be easy for him to get a driver or bum rides for a while.
