Probably more to do with poor soil health Stephanie. Soil PH should be between 5.5&7.0. Microorganisms and nutrients play an essential part of plant growth, even the depth of quality soil at root base plays an integral part of healthy growth. Just two inexperienced gardeners I suspect.
