Hi Holly,

I support this, it’s nice to see people caring about how we talk to each other. I know things can get misunderstood, especially when you take away basic communication cues of facial expression, tone and posture. It is hard sometimes to write a quick response to something and also provide a bunch of caveats so no one gets offended by accident. I think both sides need to exercise care, both when writing and reading.

Also, if you’re interested: In Canada we have Freedom of Expression which is kinda similar to your freedom of speech but we restrict certain speech if it’s hateful, defamatory or obscene. Also, new laws can be passed that further restrict speech within reasonable limits of a democratic society. So free speech not an absolute right here.
