I’ve never been through a binge and purge cycle.  I mostly built my stuff up slowly, finding many items on clearance or on sale.  Occasionally I would buy a couple of items at a time.

As for purge, I only had one half-purge.  When my (now ex) spouse found my things, she tossed it all in the garbage.  But since I was the one who took the garbage to the curb, I found it and retrieved about half the stuff, deciding that I probably wouldn’t use the other half.
