My real name is unisex and I find it more natural to use it in real life, regardless of my gender expression. Nikki is really most useful as shorthand for en femme me: “this top would look great on Nikki” that kind of thing. If we meet new people while out, my wife will introduce me as her friend Nikki, but that’s pretty rare. It feels better when people meet me as Nikki, but from people who’ve known me for a long time it sounds stilted. It’s hard to say where it came from, as it really just popped into my head and resonated.
