Hi Robyn and many thanks for your interesting input. I guess this idea of almost peaks and troughs of need/desire is fairly common but I wonder if in your case are the summits of the peaks higher and the troughs not so deep as you get older? In other words if you think of it as a wave form is the whole wave elevated? Just a thought.
