I love playing video games and most of the time I play as female characters because they obviously look better and it’s more satisfying to see a female leading a story. How about you girls?

• #354769

I’ve been playing video games since my dad bought our Atari 400 back in 1981. I play a mix of female and male characters depending on my mood, and in RPGs, how I picture the character in my mind. Or when I come up with a name that’s too good to pass up, like my bow users MadamBowvary and BowDuke.

What platforms do you play on and what genres do you prefer? I do the vast majority of my gaming on PC and my Android phone. I have some old consoles. (PS One, Wii, and my NES that I bought brand new in 1989 or 1990. Believe it or not it still works.) I got tired of having to buy new games every other generation of console. I’m playing DOS games on my computer from 1992.

I’m huge into MMORPGs and RPGs. I got out of adventure games when games like the Monkey Island series became popular. I hate obtuse puzzles or worse yet, puzzles you need a walkthrough for because there’s no way even Stephen Hawking would figure it out on his own. But since then I’ve really enjoyed the Syberia series. In fact Syberia is the first adventure game I ever finished.

I’ll try almost anything but I’m not good at platformers. And forget shooters. I’m a giant Instant Win button for the other team. So guess what game my girlfriend wants to try as her first online game? Call of Duty. Before too long she’ll be out there killing the bad guys and I’ll be behind the front lines as a medic.

Oh my….. okay, thanks for making me feel older now! Lol

Went through my video game phase 10, 15 years ago.  Always have played the old board games.  Have hundreds  😮  Yup, feeling old school.  Miss the days of playing a simple game face to face.  🙂

• #354852

I play on PC, Playstation(2,3and 4), Valve Index, and occasionally on and original NES like what I grew up playing.  I enjoy playing a female protagonist if it’s and option and but not a deal breaker if it isn’t.  I’m excited for Last of Us part II looks like Ellie will be the main playable character this time around.  I also enjoy playing as the sirens in the Borderlands series.

• #354863

Don’t feel too bad Stevie. Although I never got to play I still have my 2nd edition AD&D Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide. My sister’s then fiance was their DM and he tried to get me into their game. He couldn’t figure out why I lost interest when he insisted I play the character I rolled: a tree that poisoned everything.

Christina, I don’t have enough underwear to get through an entire game with survival horror elements.

• #354870

Ha yeah I agree Amber survival horror is not really my thing either.  The Last of Us might be the only game I’ve played in that genre.  The premise is pretty cool and has such a good and moving story.  It seriously brought tears to my eyes at multiple points and I’m not usually that emotional about games or movies.

I play as well and always choose or create a female character to play.

• #354939

I’m totes a gamer girl.  I don’t always pick the female character though, and sometimes, stomping the demons in DOOM Eternal while wearing stiletto’s is cathartic.

I mostly play on PC, then switch, and PS4.  Right now though, Persona 5 Royal is dominating my late night time.  It would be right up your ally if you love JRPG’s.  And Persona 4 Golden just released on STEAM today.  Another great JRPG classic if you love the genera.

-Steph 😛

• #354949

I play almost exclusively on PC.  I just can’t coordinate my fingers enough to use the PS systems and such.  My nieces have always beaten me pretty good on their PS games, from Mario to Doom and back.

I can be pretty good with Doom on my PC, and my favorite game is pretty low key, but I have been a Sims1, 2, 3, and 4 player since the game came out.  I am also pretty good at Roller Coaster Tycoon (all versions) and can make some awesome coasters that don’t scare everyone away, but you have to assign a maintenance guy for the ride just to sweep up the upchuck after they get off the ride.

I’m a major gamer have been since I was 3 playing wolfenstein 3d and classic doom now I have all modern consoles been recently playing horizon zero dawn on ps4 along with forza horizon 4 on xbox 1.

I usually make female characters to because it’s awesome to be kicking evil butt or being evil as a cute women instead of a guy but I will sometimes play as a male character but I usually play as women.

• #355011

I’ve been gaming for a long time, since the days of Atari 2600.

I only game on the PC now, I can’t afford to buy consoles any longer so I had to whittle it down to one platform.  I pick games almost exclusively if they allow character creation, and it has to allow a player to choose between a female or a male character.  I always create a female character, and try to dress her up as I would in real life – for example, Saints Row 3, I have my character dressed in a blouse, skirt, blazer, and pumps just like I do in real life.

Currently playing Killing Floor 2, and the character I picked is Rae Higgins.  Unfortunately she is not the most popular character for KF2, but I don’t care, it is a female badass kicking butt.

For the non violent gaming times, I play American Truck Simulator, and so far my whole trucking crew is made up of all female drivers.

• #355038

I suppose it depends on what you mean by games. I am a simulator lover and drive planes, trains and ships. My flight simulator is my biggest love and I dress properly in my female captains uniform when I fly short or medium haul.

• #355065

I’ve been a big motorsports fan since childhood. Over the years I’ve been to MANY short tracks (asphalt and dirt), intermediates, superspeedways, permanent road circuits and street courses all across the country. I go back to the Papyrus simulations from the early 2000s such as Grand Prix Legends, NASCAR 2003, etc. For those who don’t know, these are not “games”. They are simulations with the idea of representing the race cars and the physics of race cars very closely. Just about any change or adjustment that you can do to a real race car you can also do to the virtual one with similar changes in performance. There are no cheats or shortcuts. How fast you go is determined by the setup of your car and your skill.

I got into iRacing in 2008. My wife was in hospital for 6 1/2 months and it was a God send in terms of maintaining my sanity. I was either working, visiting her in the hospital or at home doing iRacing. Your user name is tied to the credit card that you use. At the time, it was well before DeeAnn surfaced and I didn’t have a credit card in her name. I do now, but there wouldn’t be much point in starting over. Anyway, I did iRacing for several years, got away from it for several years and now have recently returned.

I’m on my 3rd steering wheel/pedals setup, but I do lust for the more modern and sophisticated direct drive units!!

Claim to Fame? I competed against Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in iRacing many years ago for a few times. I made sure that I kept out of his way as he lapped me!?!?

For me it is an extension of my passion for motorsports. I have a collection of car and motorsports books and many have been signed by IndyCar winners, Indianapolis 500 winners, Formula 1 winners, World Driving Champions, 24 Hours of Le Mans winners and Formula 5000 champions. I’ve also driven a few race cars, though not in competition. It is just a significant part of me that has been around since age 6 and just makes the circle whole. The sound that a race engine makes at full tilt or the sound a car makes under braking and multiple downshifts is another form of music for me. It also satisfies the Techie in me as I am a mechanical engineer, though retired these days. We all like what we like and since I can’t attend events every day, so a simulation is as close as it comes…

• #355208

Absolutely. I always play the female character when available. I mostly play RPG / adventure games like Tomb Raider, ME, Skyrim, and Assassin’s Creed. I don’t do a lot of multi-player games as between work and family, it’s hard to be available as much as I would like. I also play D&D and other RPGs and, again, I always play a female character for as long as I can remember. Playing Mass Effect as FemShep and still being able to romance some of the female NPCs was, well, eye opening. That should have been a clue, I guess. 🙂

Speaking of games, did anyone else watch the Star Wars: Squadrons trailer today? Take my money!

If anyone wants to friend up on Xbox Live, just ping me.

• #355408

I came to the Mass Effect party late. I bought ME1 & 2 on Steam when ME3 was released. But it sounds like BioWare may have done us a favor. I haven’t really played it yet (I had trouble at the beginning) but from what I gather they did such a poor job with male Shepard that even a number of guys who wouldn’t have normally played female Shepard played her.

DeeAnn, the only NASCAR game I have is NASCAR Racing 4. It’s installed but I never played it. Do you know anything about it?

Stephanie, I’ve loved JRPGs since the first time I played Final fantasy on my NES. I checked out Persona 4 Golden but the art style isn’t my thing. But still I’m always willing to try something that someone I know recommends. So it’s on my wishlist, along with 41 other games. Eh, that’s a drop in the bucket. Counting freeware games I have 420 games in my library.

Hey Paula (yes I love what my generation calls “oldies”), have you tried Las Vegas Tycoon? It’s sort of in the same vein as the Roller Coaster Tycoon games except you create casinos.

Has anybody else played The Elder Scrolls Online? It’s my all-time favorite RPG, MMO or no. The rest of the game is great but the character creation system is great. I’ve made everything from 6′ tall Viking warriors to 5′ tall elves. And that’s just my female characters.
Amber
I aboslutely love the ME series.  I started Andromeda but it remains unfinished.  Depending on what article or forums you read, most people prefer the male shep over fem shep.  I’ve only played as fem shep, and I had to use some extra help to engage the romances with the other female characters.

Has anyone played the Dragon Age series ?  I enjoyed that more than ME.  In DA 2, you play along side your sister; it surprised me to find out that some players were trying to romance your own sister in the game.   I tried, you can’t romance your sister in the game, I guess Bioware has some morals  🙂

• #355425

I’m actually playing ME:Andromeda right now! I’ve had it since it came out but never got around to playing it. I’ve been going through a bunch of my older games during the stay home. I’ve probably put 80 hours into this game so far (I’m an achievement completionist).

• #355435

Hi Wendy. I have Dragon Age: Origins but I didn’t like it. Well actually, I didn’t like it then but I wasn’t used to RPGs yet. I didn’t like Baldur’s gate either until a few years ago when I gave it another chance. Neverwinter Nights absolutely threw me back then too but now I love it. It looks like I have another game to try again before I say “meh”.

• #355440

I don’t cafe what other people say. Mass Effect Andromeda was great

• #355441

Mass Effect was a great game. I played with my female Shepard all the way through til the end. One of the best rpgs I’ve ever played.

Amber:

I dug into my Archives and look what I found! #3 was from 1999 and #4 was from 2001. If you search for Sierra Papyrus, a Wikipedia link will take you to some information about what happened to Sierra and Papyrus. It is interesting to note that David Kaemmer was the technical force behind their racing offerings and he later he went on to establish iRacing. I don’t know if he is still involved, however. With #3, #4 and Grand Prix Legends (1966 Formula 1 season, the last before cars sprouted wings and developed downforce) you could run the sim locally or compete against others online. Back in the day, I remember folks complaining BITTERLY about how difficult Grand Prix Legends was and that there must be something wrong with it. What people often did not consider was that you had racing cars on skinny little tires and absolutely NO downforce. The cars were VERY sensitive to ham-fisted steering, braking and throttle inputs. Anyway, iRacing continues online running without being able to run locally, but the business model is very different.

With Sierra/Papyrus, as I remember, you bought the sim and you could go online for free. With iRacing, there is a monthly membership fee and you buy (actually lease) cars and tracks beyond the core offerings That come with membership. I suspect that the Sierra/Papyrus business model was not sustainable.

Anyway, bearing in mind that we’re talking about roughly 20 year old software, it becomes a question of what version of Windows will run it. That is likely a major hurdle. As I remember, The software worked pretty well. The adjustments you could make to change the characteristics of the cars, such as spring rates, ride heights, left side weight bias, gear ratios, corner weights, how much of the grill is covered, etc. all behave quite realistically. But, certainly over time the physics model has become more accurate and sophisticated. These days they laser scan the tracks for accuracy and use actual design drawings to model the physical characteristics of the cars. One thing is for sure and it applies to any motorsports simulation, a steering wheel and pedals are needed. There is no other way to get the accuracy and sensitivity needed.

• #355539

Unfortunately I play guys game… such as FIFA , Ghost recon, DOOM.. However I chose a female character for Ghost Recon.. As for Tekken, always NINA…

• #355546

Definitely a gamer here, because,  obviously, any opportunity that is available I will always pick to be a female. GTA 5 online is great character customization, especially bc you can were lingerie as an outfit. And where that is tempting to enjoy looking at running around I prefer my girl to wear practical attire to be kicking ass in. Its kinka a pet peeve of mine actually, when tv or movies make poor highly unrealistic wardrobe choices they put women in while doing all sorts of action sequences. But that’s a whole other discussion lol. So anyway I think I found a way to make her look badass and sexy. She has black hair in a ponytail, hornrim glasses, black leather biker vest with the anarchy A on the back, a red and black camisole, black leggings that somehow look leather too, but they’re skintight so, awesome. And as for the shoes, red converse with white trim. (Which I am always rockin chuck taylors irl btw lol). I have love a game so much more the deeper personalization of your character gets and gta nails it

Definitely a gamer girl here! I  do like playing the girls in games (When possible) and it’s  usually the female characters in the game that always kick ass anyways! 😉

• #355565

I’m not a gamer at all, but my adult children play.  On the latest version of Animal Crossing, your clothing and hair style isn’t tied to your character’s sex.  You now have freedom of gender expression.  So you can play a male character, with feminine clothing and/or a feminine hair style.

• #355620

I’m a gamer and ninety percent chances it’s a female character. I’ve been playing MMO’s Elder’s Scroll, WoW, Swtor, secret world legends. I enjoyed Resident Evil and Civilization. I use to play D&D and would say that was when I first began playing female characters. I did give up gaming for years while I played around in bands, but have returned to it.

• #355639

“when tv or movies make poor highly unrealistic wardrobe choices they put women in while doing all sorts of action sequences”

I agree completely Lacey. Some months back the devs of a MMORPG I play on my phone decided to change the armor everyone wears. I hit the roof when I saw what the women were wearing now. I can’t remember exactly what I said in my e-mail to them but I remember telling them that I was highly disappointed that my character was now “running around in armor so skimpy it wouldn’t protect her from a rabid mosquito let alone a sword”. I got a very nice, very long e-mail back explaining why the changes were made and that they weren’t happy about them either. That’s too long a story but I changed my 1 star review back to a 5 star review and I’m still playing the game.

• #355641

Yup I’d have to agree with you as well Amber, unfortunately it’s getting worse for the gamer industry, that is unless you only play mobile app games, which as a proper gamer myself starting off with N64 and original playstation, iit is driving me absolutely mental watching as all the biggest companies not fund major titles anymore bc the money has moved to pay to win and micro transaction crap… But I always held high regards to games like skyrim that have legitimate armour styles for the player.

• #355640

I’m guessing that the majority of buyers of what you mentioned are guys, so the thought is playing to that demographic…

• #355644

Sometimes DeeAnn, yes. But definitely not in this case.

At the time they were a two man company. They had two choices when they went to change the armor. They could either pay big money to have someone do custom work, which they couldn’t afford, or they could but premade art. They were appalled (my words but their feelings) by what was available. They bought good looking art but they spent some time editing it so it only showed the amount of skin that it ended up showing. They’ve since hired an artist but although she made some very minor touches to the armor there are other things she needs to focus on right now, like the splash screen she created. I’m pretty sure that working on armor is on her todo list.

I won’t say what game it is or who the devs are because the review I left on the Google Play store has my real name and these forums are public but if anyone wants to message me I’ll be glad to tell you.

• #355702

I am a pretty big gamer. I tend to lean more towards whichever sex has the better customization options, which is almost always universally girls, or whichever sex has the better romance options in games that have limitations like that, like Harvest Moon. But I’m usually not too picky about it. Lots of games I kind of forget what my character looks like halfway through.

• #355739

Hi Jenny my fiance introduced me to the harvest moon series along with rune factory and story of seasons. Love them all!

• #355742

Alison I know right. I decided though to play a female this time so I could create an assortment of outfits for her. I find female outfits a lot more fun to create than male outfits. I have outfits ranging from goth to princess to Egyptian queen.

I’ve been a big PC gamer since my early teens, although less so lately. Ive played FPSes. flight sims, RPG’s, and some strategy and racing games.

In multiplayer games I would never pick female characters out of fear my friends would notice and ask why, but in singleplayer games I almost always pick female characters when I can. Kicking ass/going on adventures as a girl just speaks to me so much.

Did anyone else play No One Lives Forever? In their time those games were the only big action games besides Tomb Raider with a female main character. I loved those games and replayed them a bunch of times. I remember deeply, deeply, secretly loving the fact that your only choice was to play as a girl, which meant not having to explain that to anyone when I played.

• #359590

little late to this, but I remember pirating NOLF at college for my whole floor to play.  We mostly played CS7.2, but at least half of us had fun with NOLF. I dont remember much from the game except having to fight Fat Bastard and playing as a chick because my roommates brother complained a bout playing as a chick.

gonna have to look this up on GoG…after I play bloodlines for the fifth time

• #355969

Hi Ashley,

I used to play NOLF, back then the fact that you played a girl operative didn’t bother me one bit, I love FPS (still do to this day), and back then there was no COD or Battlefield, Doom was king and I played Doom and Doom 2 many times over, so I was looking for another FPS to play.

In fact, I have the NOLF (Game of the Year edition) CD sitting on an old computer right now, I don’t think it will even install on Win 10, let alone play.  I remember I got stuck on a level where you had to sneak past some guards, I became frustrated and stop playing.

I used to play multiplayer with KF2 alot, and always picked Rae Higgins and didn’t care who saw it.  I stopped playing any multiplayer on line as some players took gaming way too seriously and that took the fun and enjoyment away from me.

• #355989

heh Wendy I remember those moments in the first game! I meant to add that if anyone’s experiencing some gaming nostalgia and wants to check the NOLF games out, you’re probably better off skipping the first one altogether and just playing NOLF 2. Slightly better graphics and a much more polished game overall.

I have KF and KF2, but never really got into them that much. Way-too-serious types are a problem for me too. Seems like there isn’t much of an organized place for gamers in between casual/mobile games and super serious competitive games. I was actually part of a squad for Battlefield 2 that tried to go pro. (Well they might have actually, I was definitely gone by then, whatever happened!) It was a fun idea at first, but the commitment was just way too much and it stopped being fun, so I left.

• #355992

Ashely,

When you mentioned NOLF 2, I went to my shelf of old games in the original cardboard box, and there it was, NOLF 2.  I can’t remember if I even installed that game to play.  It is a shame now, as I don’t have any extra computers lying around where I can install win 95/98 to play those games.

I usually just play single player games, that way I can play any way I want without someone piping in and criticizing or even kicking you off the game just because they didn’t like the way you play.

You shouldn’t have to go so far as fiddling around with old operating systems Wendy, I’m pretty sure there are ways you can install older games on Windows 10. This talk has me feeling nostalgic so I may just look for some stuff to try myself. I’ll be sure to post if I find anything that works!

A singleplayer game with a good story and characters beats out the pressure and competitiveness of multiplayer for me these days as well.

On that note, I’m seriously looking forward to Cyberpunk 2077. I still go back to The Witcher 3 from time to time, so I’m at the point where anything CDPR does I will be like Take my money!!!!

Sorry Stevie, I’ve always had some problems keeping track of many things at once. Give me enough time and let me work on one or two ideas at a time and I could probably take a crack at solving that pesky little Grand Unified Theory Of Everything problem. But I can’t think enough moves ahead and keep track of the different possibilities to even be a decent chess player, tried though I might. Those kind of board games are beyond me although Rail Baron still holds a place in my heart.

I love games, usually though I’m playing the guy since a lot of the dog games I’ve played had that as the default. I did play a mobile game once where I could play as a female, it was fun until I accidently erased my data and had to start over.

But a few games I did for sure my second time around like the Pokemon ones, a few some games, and one rpg for my old PS2.

Thanks for the update Britney.

After your post, I became more curious about NOLF.   I searched on Steam, nothing.  I then found an article that explained a company was going to re-release it on platforms like Steam.  Unfortunately, they ran into licensing issues, for starters the companies that originally developed NOLF changed hands so many times, no one was sure who had the license for it.  The company that was going to re-release it gave up on the project, so there will be no re-release of NOLF.

Some people did say they did get NOLF to run in Win 10, but with some issues.  I may give it a go and see what happens.

Another alternative is to run Winebottler, a freeware program that runs on Macintoshes. Their site says:

WineBottler packages Windows-based programs like browsers, media-players, games or business applications snugly into Mac app-bundles.

Your company provides you with a login, mail, calendar and contacts that only work on certain browsers?
You quickly want to test your websites in Windows-based browsers.
You want to play games, that are not ported to OS X?
Your online trading platform or accounting tool only runs on Windows?
Your audio book player is not available on OS X?

No need to install emulators, virtualizers or boot into other operating systems – WineBottler runs your Windows-based programs directly on your Mac.
This is possible thanks to a Windows-compatible subsystem, which is provided by the great OpenSource tool Wine.

I have no experience with running things from different platforms on Macs, using things such as Apple BootCamp, Parallels or VWware Fusion, but I believe the question comes down to acceptable performance and if it necessary to detune things like graphics detail. Those would likely be potential game breakers for reasonable play…

• #359282

I don’t play computer/console games – I’m more of a boardgamer and miniature wargamer.

Back when I played RPGs in the late 70s/early 80s I would regularly play female characters.

(The most recent RPG I played – a session of  Night Witches last year – only allows female characters)

• #376193

The very first DnD character I made was a female rogue, and I’m playing with my core group of friends who I don’t share this side of myself but I’m very comfortable around.  Well while playing her it was the first time I experienced be addressed with female pronouns,  and it felt exiting to be openly “female, ” so to speak…

I don’t, but my son does.  Should I be worried?😂

used to be, not so much now.
What I have found is many of the trans women I follow on IG are gamers, D&D ers, computer geeks. My therapist has also noticed this in her practice.

We used to play “Risk” all through the new ght. Still play “Axis and Allies” sometimes.

I can relate to this! I just went through Skyrim once again as a blonde Nord named Etain (my first name) 😂

I really don’t stay too interested in games while in girl mode though. I’m usually distracted with clothes, manicures, pedicures, brow maintenance, etc etc.

Throughout my video gaming history I enjoyed playing many female protagonists in video games such as
Lara Croft from Tomb Raiders series.
Xena from Xena the Princess Warior.
Claire Redfield and Jill Valentinefrom Resident Evil series.
Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3.
Mona Sax from Max Payne.
Emily Kaldwin from Dishonored 2.
Amicia from Innocence A plague tale.
Max Caulfield from Life is Strange

I’ve been console gaming since Pong. PC gaming since Commodore 64. Did a stint in the 90’s playing D&D. If there was a female option, I played it (except in D&D). Since the mid-2000’s, I haven’t played the manly genres and started playing Sims. Sims 4 has sucked over 2500 hours of my time. I love creating female sims and have heavily modded my game with tons of fashion options. I can spend two hours creating a character. I used to have a female only world full of lesbians. The devs made some changes and now there is no choice for men in the world. That’s okay though because I have no remorse for killing them and somebody has to die.

OMG!

My daughters both loved the sims 4 and played the heck out of. Their jaws dropped when I read how many hours you invested in it.

I will admit I LOL when you described your Sims game play style.

Gaming since early 80’s and if there has been a female player option I have chosen it.

Notable games (but by no means complete) Skyrim, Fallout 3, PlayStation Home, Prey (2017)

Also enjoyed playing the female heroes in Alien Isolation and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Cant WAIT for Thursday and CD Project Refs Cyberpunk 2077, so I may go dark here at CDH for awhile!

I played computer games on my first Apple IIe. I played DnD, then when they came out with the old ADnD, I stared playing female characters mostly. I stopped playing shortly before 3rd edition. I have played console games in 90st to early 2000s. I still play Skyrim occasionally on PS3. I said I would not buy a PS4 until they came out with Ender Scrolls 6, now that looks to be maybe next year or year after, but if it isn’t on ps, I’ll probably not get it. I don’t like xbox. Last couple years I got me video game playing teenage sons into DnD, and consider that an accomplishment. Couldn’t believe that’s on 5th edition now… The NPC I keep in our nest the party isn’t female though, in deference to playing with my family, as only my wife knows. Meh…

I cut my teeth on Atari and Nintendo as a child. Still love those games, in fact, I have a Raspberry Pi setup with 13000 games, virtually all of the Atari, Commodore 64, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, MAME Arcade, some N64 and PS 1 also. It all fits in a system the size of a bar of soap. I had an XBOX 1 and loved dressing up the female character in Sunset Overdrive. I have an old 360 still, should play it sometime. My wife has a PS4, and we are talking about finally getting a Switch.
