Hi All,
Following on from Transgender Day of Visibilty – Mar 31st – is April 1st. Or April Fool Day.
In the UK press today, after numerous reviews and delays it was revealed that the government intended to U-turn and drop its plans to ban conversion therapy, only to make a second hasty U-turn following a furious reaction from LGBT groups and some politicians. Hurrah, you might say.
The kicker?
Ah, well – trans don’t count. As the BBC put it “… it will ban so-called conversion therapy for gay or bisexual people in England and Wales – but not for transgender people….”
Happy April 1st

But isn’t conversion therapy for Trans hormones and surgery Marti?

Hi Angela,
Wouldn’t it be nice if that was the only interpretation of conversion therapy 😉

No, Angela, that would be supportive treatment – conversion therapy is basically an attempt to convert someone away from being gay, lesbian, queer, trans etc to being so-called ‘normal’. Or, torture, to put it briefly…
Already banned in many countries and quite rightly so. Terrible thing to do to someone.

Hi Marti
Mostly I find the UK a progressive place, and then something like this happens, what can you do?

Hi Emily,
You could get used to it, trans is a nice red meat issue that some politicians can’t resist exploiting.
Or consider finding a bit of money or time and support organisations that think that if conversion therapy is inhumane (and doesn’t work anyway) for one group of LBGT+ , then why isn’t it so for others?
