To all of you out there blessed with long hair, or to those who are letting it grow out, I need to ask. Is putting it all in a ponytail a bit of a cop out or waste of potential?? Most GG’s I know ( the older ones anyway ) use the pony tail as a last resort quite often. If their hair is a mess, or they have not washed it in a few days, they will just put in a ponytail and off they go.
That’s all fine and well, but I’m not growing my hair just to have it muzzled into a ponytail. I want to do things with it – have it layered and free. My dear friend has suggested some streaks, and I like the idea!! Nothing too extreme at my age, but I think it would look…. pretty.
So, do you let your hair flow free as it was meant to, or just do the ponytail thing. I don’t want to look like just a 70’s hippie – I’m going for more feminine than that. Yes, it is much more work, but so gratifying!
P.S. yes, I will admit I was at the salon recently where Meghan styled my hair. Loved it so much I wanted to sleep standing up so as not to ruin it! Lol

Hi Stevie.
I don’t go out en femme on a daily basis so my natural, mostly white with a little grey ponytail, looks better and is kept out of my face being tied back. Its gotten to the point of about 12 inches and I love to feel it on the back of my neck. I wear it mid height so it sticks out a bit and falls nice and wavy with curls at the tips. I have no plans to cut it but to let it keep growing.
At home I wear it down and it falls past my shoulders where I pull it behind my ears to keep it out of my face. My only problem is at my age its getting a little thin and I find loose hairs all the time. I wish I had grown it out years ago.
I would love to go to the salon and have a fem haircut but I don’t often get the chance to go out fully dressed. As it is I wear panties and a bra under dressing every day and the ponytail helps me feel girly all day. Its a sort of an out of sight but can you guess kind of look.

Michelle I do not go out en femme very often at all, but I want my hair to, lol! Maybe I’m nudging myself more and more by having “girly” hair. It may make it easier to go out more often when I see my hair done up.

I am frustrated to report that my hair seems not to have grown any since my icon photo was taken (about 6 months). But the perm makes a passable femme style, and I recently had it colored.

I agree. Most of the time I don’t bind up my hair, but do so when doing something like weeding when I clip it out of the way. Otherwise I can’t see what I’m pulling.

My hair is growing, but it is not long enough to do anything with yet. Accept frizz out in the humidity!
I might do a low pony tail for at work. My desire when it gets long enough is to try a curling iron.

Eva, humidity is our enemy.
I’d love to try a curling iron, but am afraid I would make a mess of things!

I have long hair for the past 35 years, I only wear it in a ponytail when I have to work or cooking

Rightly so. Otherwise hair should be like that Tom Petty song –
Free Fallin’! 😁

Stevie, great post. I love my long hair and am thankful that at my age I still have all my hair. The ONLY good thing that came out of covid is it gave me the excuse to let it grow. It is now a little past the shoulders. Love the way it naturally curls just a little. Even when dressed in drab when my hair is down it gives my face a feminine look. I do pull it back into a ponytail when I have to present myself as male.
I never have to worry about my wig. Is it brushed out right, is it on straight, is it going to fall off. I am planning to have my hair colored again in about 6 weeks -I think covering the gray takes 10 to 15 years off my appearance.
Everyone think about letting your hair grow out if you can.

Sandy, I am grateful for the hair I have at my age – especially when I look at my bald younger brother! Certainly going to run with it while I can. I know a wig could complete the femme look better, but since I have to fake the boobs, it’s nice to have something natural! 😊

Hair I love long hair.. It’s going on 4 years since I cut mine. When I young I had long hair and in my time was very fashionable. The 70s where self expression was all the rage. Ponytails were common and wore them pretty much all the time. Then now… started growing it again and is well down my back. In my 60s I could never thought it would be so full. Even my color has come back. When it was short crew cut style much of it was prevalently grey but now its much the color I had with that touch of silver 😄…
I’m blessed for having thick, full body hair and probably my best asset..my ponytails are quite bushy and enjoy using several different bands, Scrunchies, barrettes and even hair pins. I have a draw full and always looking for better ones and just lately one of my daughters taught me how to do buns and hair Braids. It’s been a hot go with our extreme temperatures but I’m Constantly learning so many different ways of putting it up. Low ponytails in most cases but a much higher one when Steffi’s home. Just had 3 inches cut and thin out but soon I’ll be planning my first salon visit… what will I do?.

Haha, I was hoping to hear from you Steph, your hair is gorgeous! You just need to find a LGTB friendly salon staffed with lesbians (I got lucky). Makes for a great afternoon at the salon! 😊

I used to have hair half way down my back, and as I rode a motorcycle to work year round I generally had it either in a tail or braided. I am also blessed… or cursed depending upon one’s opinion with very curly hair, so it got into a right mess at the first excuse, so it had to be controlled. Top down? Braided! On the bike? Tail, sleeve, or braids. Windy day here on the coast? Either controlled or a frizz fest. More recent years it’s been back to a military cut, but I’m considering something layered with longer on top and tight clipped sides. I’ll have to see what could work for me. As long as I don’t let the top get more than a few inches it should be controllable. I’ve still got most of it, and it’s all still OEM color, lol. Sort-of a medium brown. I can see going with an androgynous cut, even a bit femme, but I have a difficult time seeing myself with dyed hair. Nobody at work has said anything yet about my looks, or even wearing pride shirts, but the last guy who dyed his hair was teased mercilessly for weeks. It was admittedly a bad job, but still…

When I had long hair I felt a high ponytail was one of my cutest looks. I prefer it to a bun when it is hot.

The higher the ponytail the more feminine I think. Very perky!😊

One thing I like to do with my ponytail to make it more girly is to tie a bow with a pretty ribbon and let the tails ends fly in the breeze also.

My Pretty Pony(tail) 😊. That’s a cute way to keep a ponytail!

Stevie,
I am a senior sister CD with 20+ inch gray/silver hair. and I prefer the ponytail, because when I wear my hair down it lays on my neck and I sweat profusely and my neck breaks out. At the same time whenever I wear my hair down I have received a multitude of compliments, from men and women both young and old that how lovely and great my hair looks on me and those compliments make me feel great and very womenly.

I’m with you, Stevie…the pony tail is somewhat of a last resort. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan for sure…but it is the easiest, quickest way to put on a socially acceptable look and hide unstyled hair, after all.
Given the wide range of styles available to women, choosing simple, quick, and easy isn’t going to be a good look for most times. Trip to the grocery store? Sure! Out for drinks? No way.
But then there are those in-between times. Maybe work at the office, or informal dinner with friends, a visit to see mom, whatever. It’s nice to toss it into a tail and get on with the day, and not everyone can take the time to style their hair. It’s in those times that I like a quick updo. Kind of a cross between the ease of a ponytail and the elegance of a classier style, a cute updo can be done in a minute with a few accessories.
One woman’s opinion….

I often wear my hair in a pony tail when doing ‘messy’ things and need a quick fix to keep it all out of the way, however over the years I have found that the pony tail bungies have broken my hair strands when worn too long so this is my less preferred method nowadays.
I much prefer to use a ring and make a bun or do a twist and then use a slide clip – its a little more fem and keeps all the hair up out of the way but is still quick to do.
When I am treating patients I tend to do the twist and clip system as it keeps all my hair up and away and looks more professional – and with practice only takes a few seconds to do.
after all – up-do’s are very chic !
hugs

Lisa, I do like the idea of a hair band to keep it tidy. I’m just getting to the ‘long enough to think of what to do with it’ time.

Wow, you have it all covered! Celeste you are far more advanced with hair care then I am!! 😎
