The journey does not start out great. I was served with divorce papers today. This has to come to an end before the journey can begin.

The company I work for has a Inclusion and Diversity strategy for LGBTQ+. I contacted the head of the committee and came out to her that I was a crossdresser. I asked her if she considered crossdressing as part of the spectrum. She did. We had a discussion about crossdressing for an hour. At the end of the discussion, I volunteered to be on the committee and will be able to share about crossdressing with the committee and it can be added as part of inclusion and diversity. The committee can help my journey to be able to dress in both male and female attire as I choose as long as it is appropriate for work. I can also pave the way for others that are afraid to come forward. One concern I had was future promotions. This is something that would have to be addressed. It should not be an issue. It could be an advantage.

Also, the executive support is my Manager’s Manager. He was consulted prior to addressing the committee about my joining and he will not out me. My introduction was that at work I am identified as (he, him) and at home I identify as sometimes (he, him) and sometimes (she, her).

I am very excited for the future for myself and others.

Well Tina, as one chapter closes another begins. It is great that you have such a good employer who is supportive of you. It is also important to make them aware of other issues which may affect your work performance. As for promotion it should never be about how you dress but what you have to offer in skill and knowledge to move up the scale. Yes having an extra layer in being a crossdresser could help but not used against an employer to gain a position as I am not sure what you meant by ‘advantage’ in your comment.

I hope these is a time for Tina to blossom and become part of the workplace. I wish you the best.

Sorry about the divorce.  It can be a difficult time.

Congrats on coming out to the head of the LGBTQ+ Inclusion committee.  I know my company has an accepting policy (gender identity is among their anti-discrimination policies).  But that doesn’t mean I’m willing to come out.  I’ve worked with some people too long and don’t want to have to explain over and over why I’m wearing women’s clothes.  Even though policy says that’s not allowed, it’s hard to put policy on people’s curiosity.  And running an errand before or after work can be problematic.  They keep saying to be your authentic self, but I think that works better for the LG community than it does for people with a part time gender expression.

I’ll keep my crossdressing and office time separate.  When you choose to come out to your coworkers, more power to you and I wish you the best.
