I played with Barby dolls when I was young. When no one was looking I would dress Ken in Barby’s clothes.

If I wasn’t allowed to wear a dress at least I could fulfill my dreams by dressing Ken in a pretty dress

I overheard my grandson’s uncle from the other side of the family tell him he couldn’t play with “fidget toys” which are very popular, now, because they are for girls.

I told my grandson it was ok.

I wanted to bitch-slap that bigoted SOB.

That’s just stupid. I wanted Barbie dolls, partly because the clothes, partly because she was a she, and partly because she had so many accessories. But she was for girls. I got GI Joe, because he was for boys. Or that’s what I was always told.  How in the world is a fidget toy anything but neutral? I mean it’s good for anyone with ADD/ADHD issues, including adults!

        Fml…

If you want to hear a piece of archaic thinking, my mother in law once told my wife she couldn’t have a Tonka truck because it would turn her into a lesbian. WOW, back in your cave there mom.

Personally, I always let my kids play with what they wanted. Fortunately, my mother was the same way with me. I had GI Joes, and a Raggey Anne. I never really got into Barbie but Lara Croft…..I wanted to be like her. The point is, who cares? Aisle or no, kids will be kids. If they get gruff for wanting a certain type of play that is the role of parents to defend their children. Strong moms and dads have a better influence than any toy. Just my penny and a half.

I miss my Easy Bake Oven. They’re being discontinued. The 100 watt cooking bulb is now considered a safety hazard. They’ve been around since 1963.

BUT, my 10 year old nephew can go online and easily participate in an online violent and sexist video game (he doesn’t, I’m just making a point).

Is it really a wonder that mental health issues are on the rise?

Let Ken and Barbie wear what they want! I certainly did!

        100 watt bulbs are lethal!!🤣🤣..

Kids these days get anything they want to know off the internet…

Totally schooled in sexual techniques….but cannot boil an egg…..it’s the way of the world no matter what the parents want….if kids have a phone….they have access….

Donna, I got to take Home Ec also.  I needed an elective one year in high school, and they let me pick that one.  Loved it  I swear I walked out every day with an estrogen buzz, I was the only male in there.  And the 2 days we talked about condoms, I died of embarrassment, but what a way to go.  LOL.

Barbie is THE reason I discovered my girl inside.

My sister and I were what would later be termed ‘latch-key kids’.  I was her shadow and she was so important to me.  When her friends wouldn’t let me join in the Barbie group, she took me back to our apartment and she and a friend of hers made Paula with some of her outgrown clothes.  When we rejoined the other girls and I was introduced as Paula, they all accepted me that way.

So, maybe Barbie could be the first TG Counselor, mine was at least.

Now that I’m out and living as a woman I am deeply diving into the girly things I was denied as a boy. I am collecting and playing with an ever growing collection of Barbie dolls. In just one year I have accumulated over 80 dolls. Ken, Barbie, their parents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, cousins, friends of all kinds and kids. They have a growing variety of ethnicity, body size and hair styles. I dress them, trade clothes and make up stories. See the articles section for my story of Ken and Barbie, spoiler alert, Ken is a cd. My inner little girl is having a blast.

          My Dear Beth!

          Bravo!!

I just read your Ken and Barbie story. Right from the get-go I was doubled-over!

“Barbie was at work at the hospital.” What!? She’s got a job? Never occurred to me. My Barbie went shopping and partied too much.

You have comic gems sparkled throughout.

          Well done!

          👩🏻‍🦰 🧑🏻 Barb :B

Barb, thank you so much. According to the official lexicon of Mattel, Barbie has over 600 career options. She works but can’t seem to keep a job, LOL.

Huh, how about that! I always thought her careers were just “pretend” jobs, but I can see her having retention issues.

My ideal Barbie is a platinum-blonde astrophysicist. Yours?

Again, kudos for your excellent story, Beth!

My favorite is a tie between Yoga Barbie and Astronaut Barbie. Yoga Barbie is extremely flexible (well that figures) and can be posed in hundreds of positions. Astronaut Barbie is just cute with her short dark blonde hair.

      Hi Lisa…

Yet another indication that the world’s going even more bonkers.

I guess we will have seperate girls departments and boys departments in all toy shops soon.

and a department in between for the ” Half n Half’s” !!!! Thinking back, my Action man definitely didn’t have any dangly bits….I suppose he would be perfect for the middle section

      …..”all action and no man”

      Disbelieving smiles, grace xx

Gendered toys? So this brings the question of am I the way I am because I had a black baby doll when I was very very young? I highly doubt it. I don’t know where it came from but I remember it was almost as big as I was. It was before the age of five and I had it for a while until an aunt took it away. Some how I remember that time and I was crushed. The people raising me then began to give me boy toys like cowboy stuff and trucks. One of my grandmothers collected dolls with big dresses which I admired and secretly wanted to play with but wasn’t allowed.

Kids will play with whatever toy tickles their interest for the current half hour, until something else catches their attention, regardless of what section or packaging it comes in.

It seems it is the adults who try to categorize what they see and do.  Let the kids be kids and leave them alone.  Just make sure they don’t hurt themselves while they figure out things, like toys, for themselves.

Besides, many of them have more fun with the boxes than what came inside.  Cigar boxes, for instance.

        Hi Paula,

Absolutely agree, often  the box became a huge toy in its own right. It inspired the imagination of the children in play. Boxes of all sizes became everything  from dolls houses to castles, tanks and boats, cut up they were turned in every thing the imagination could wish for.

Gosh I can remember when my daughters were young we would glue round cardboard tubes together, dress up as gnomes,  fill up the bath and sit round pretend to be fishing plastic toys out the bath. Cardboard and imagination what a combination.

The marketing and packaging has been segregating boys from girls for many years. Hopefully a gender neutral toy section will start to break down that segregation, and show kids that it doesn’t have to be a black and white thing. Any kid should feel welcome to play with any toys that they like.

The real problem is that gender segregation supports the patriarchy, and inhibits gender equality. We may think that we’ve put that all behind us in this day and age, and that women have equality. But, why do we have so few female engineers/scientists? Studies show that girls are put off by STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), because STEM toys are primarily marketed as boy toys. And on the other side of that coin, which gender do you think kitchen toys are marketed to?

All toys should be gender neutral. If a boy happens to be drawn to a truck, that’s fine. But, if a boy happens to like a doll, that should be fine too.

So very true on the marketing Birel. Lionel trains started marketing pink engines with what ( at the time ) was considered “ girly  colored “ rolling stock in mid 50’s and into late 60’s

      Hi Lisa,

I thought all toys were gender neutral for pre school. Are we not encouraging gender phobia by segregated toys section. Children identify toys that they choose to play with that gives them fun. Not every boy that plays with girl’s toys wants to be a girl, and most girls that play cowboys do not what to be men. I think most  children can distinguish between male and female toys and what toys are neutral. Surely this sends out the wrong signals to developing minds, when we should be encouraging equality that  right that if  you should  choose to play with any toy regardless of gender they were targeted for you are not degraded for doing so.

I feel many of these issues are being forced on to extremely vulnerable developing minds, and ends up with the possibility that our group of  communities ends up with segregated areas that quite frankly we don’t need, that undermine us, when the main issue is teaching equality, to live a free life with choices.

Lisa seen that myself. Although I like to dress as a woman, this whole idea of gender neutral toys is a joke. I believe there should only be boys and girls toys and boys and girls should be to play with both

Regarding Ken dolls, I think today he is anatomically incorrect as manufactured…BUT, I will swear to the day I die that the first Kens produced did have a, um, well, you know, ‘bulge’ down there.  At least more so than Barbie ever did. (I will also swear to the day I die that I did NOT, EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, when I was about 15 in the early 60’s, wander up to a store in town that had Ken easily displayed and tugged his shorts down when NO ONE was looking.  Never did that, would never think of doing that, ever). BUT  it was there, I swear.

And yes, I did play occasionally play with Barbies of my sisters when no one was around.

At one time, I believe late 1960’s, Mattel planed on creating anatomically correct Ken and Barbie dolls. Some preproduction dolls were released in Canada, France and Germany. The conservative Christian right exploded and Mattel was forced to withdraw the dolls and cancel the project. The negative press continued expanding into the fact that the existing dolls have no underwear. Mattel was forced to change the molds on all of the dolls. If you look down Ken’s pants or up Barbie’s skirt today you will see molded in underwear.

They’re dolls for heck’s sake! Stop forcing adult life on children’s toys.

Mattel’s intention was as an educational aid for health care workers and educators. The protesters claim was that it would be used by perverts as a sex toy. They had to be perverts just to think of that!

The whole educational vs inappropriate doll controversy lit up again when Mattel marketed the friends of Barbie and Ken line.

Midge was Barbie’s best friend and Alan was Ken’s best friend. They got married, which opened up the market for wedding clothes and other dolls to be in the wedding. Thus the introduction of Skipper and Tommy. After the wedding the Midge doll was transformed into Pregnant Midge, nine months pregnant with a tiny baby under a removable belly. This was also intended to be an educational aid.

Again the religious right went into an uproar. Mattel played it smart this time and sold the rights to Midge, Alan and any children to a Mexican company. Now Mattel is not responsible for the doll and the protesters can’t do anything because it’s a foreign company. I have the Midge set, Midge, Alan, two children and the baby in the tummy. Not as good quality as Mattel but it continues the story.

            😜

Barbie’s figure has been modified over the years. When she was first introduced in 1959 she had measurements of 38DDD x 18 x 36. After complaints about realism she was reduced to 36DD x 22 x 36, then 36D x 24 x 36 and most recently to 36C x 26 x 36. There are freinds of Barbie that are even “curvey”, 38DD x 28 x 38 and petite girls that are 34B x 26 x 34. Mattel is trying to project a more normal reflection of the real world.
