I get most of my things from thrift stores. It is less expensive that way and I get a thrill of knowing that a lady has owned the items prior to my purchase of them.

    • #684479

Hi Gloria, I shop the same as you. Thrift stores are the best.

I WOULD SAY 90% OF MY THING ARE FROM THRIFT STORES . DONNA

I also shop at thrift stores and have found a dress, skirts, blouses, and a nice jacket, all at cheap prices. I recommend thrift stores for a girl on a budget.

Not me. I love Amazon. Most things come in a day or two. If it doesn’t fit or I don’t like it I drop it off at Kohls. I chose a pharmacy on my daily path to receive my purchase so I don’t have to worry about packages at home. It is however addicting. I understand how women get obsessed.
      I’m such a girl sometimes.

I did my share of thrift store shopping years ago.
But while I am not rich, shopping for pretty things is my only personal expense. I shop mainly at Macy’s and Dillard’s, but a couple years ago I became an avid shopper at Torrid.
I very seldom pay full retail for clothes. I am a very good bargain shopper, particularly for nice quality items once they go on sale.
Ah yes, add a touch of Shein to my closets…

      Hi Gloria,

Welcome to CDH.  Thrift store shopping can be fun and usually the prices are great for your budget.  Like Gabriela the clearance rack at Torrid can lead to some great finds especially when a sale allows you buy 1 get 2 free!

Hi Gloria,  I do Thrifts, Posh, Kohl’s, Macy’s and Amazon (in that order).  I also buy material (from Joann)  and sometimes make my own (usually a wiggle dress) or modify an existing garment (usually lengthen sleeves or taper the waist and hips).  I’m always looking for something interesting.       Marg

I am using Amazon and I found Light In The Box Since the consensus is Thrift Stores I will be sure to check them out. Thanks for the good advice

    • #684542

I have online accounts with three clothing retailers. I do window shopping online but usually go to the physical shop to see and feel the items before I order them online.
Almost all the dresses, skirts, blouses and shoes I own were ordered online from Store #1 and some bras from Store #2.
As for panties, these I usually just buy in person at all three shops (though mostly at two) as it is too easy to end up buying panties that look good on the website but turn out to be ill-fitting or uncomfortable.
I have some pantyhose and tights which I normally buy in the small clothing department of the supermarket when I get my groceries (also things like face and body creams, etc.).
      Love,
      Katherine

PS The only purchase I have made from Amazon so far, is a set of breast forms.

It’s thrift stores for me. I’ve been going to thrift stores before it was in fashion. There were racks and racks of wonderful dresses , skirts, slips. there were bins full of stockings of all brands and colors, styles.Tables covered with different styles of shoes, flats, boots and of course heels.  My favorite were the bins of lingerie, panties, half slips and girdles.  My head would spin as I sifted through all the wonderful feminine, silky items. In those days I could complete an outfit for less than $10! I would make my rounds to the different stores about once a month.  I would drop off things that didn’t fit or I wanted to replace. It was a great time.  I still get 90% of my femme things there, a great place to find some really nice items.

    • #684548

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am changing my male clothes into female using scissors and a sewing machine, the thrift markets in the large city offer very little choice for sizes over M.

I wonder if that is because they sell pretty quickly?

    • #684553

I’ve never tried thrift stores but do plan on doing so as it seems like an inexpensive place to get some pretty clothes from what others have said.  My clothes have come from shopping online at Woman Within and Dressbarn for the most part.  I buy most of my panties and bras at WalMart as well as pantyhose.  I did buy a skirt, blouse and pair of flats at WalMart.  I have a couple dresses, a skort and blouses that my wife gave me.  I regularly get catalogs in the mail from Woman Within and Roaman’s as well as Lands End.  I enjoy looking thru them at the different things that are available.

Thrift stores are a big find and haul for me. Of course, there is also always some really great online places you can look for and find. I love getting a good deal.

I sometimes get my dresses 👗 from goodwill and materials to make dresses 👗 or I have to alter dresses 👗 from goodwill but it seldom I find dresses 👗 there, shein.com is a good deal also I have a few closets full of dresses. Well we are glad to have you welcome to the site

    • #684593

I must be the outlier as I stopped buying from thrift stores a long time ago; biggest reason is sizing and selection.  As someone mentioned any size bigger than a single and decent fashion is about as rare as a hen’s tooth.  Plus all the stuff I bought from thrift stores have long since been given back to thrift stores.

I buy brand new when on sale.  I can usually find my size and I find the styles to be up to date.

Used to buy from amazon but most of the fashion is from china so that means paying close attention to sizing.

Stores I usually buy from online are : laura, suzy shier, reitmans  – prices are reasonable and I like the selection and fashion.

      • #684639

Thrifting is largely a function of where you are. The Coachella Valley where I live is made you of 9 towns that are contiguous. They range from under 30,000 people to close to 60,000. There are wealthy enclaves in most of them. I think that’s what drives what shows up in thrift stores, in quality and in brands.

On a personal note, I love silk. I have at least 2 dozen items spread across dresses, blouses, jackets and pants. One prized possession is an Oscar de la Renta blouse in my size (2XL) in like new condition for which I paid $25 or $30. While I could afford to buy some of these items new, it doesn’t sit well with me to pay something approaching $300 for a silk dress. So, for me the reasonable alternative is thrift stores.

Hi Girls. I have found lots of wonderful things on a site  called Mercari. Some used and lots of new things. Nice pricing and even free del on some.

      • #684636

The problem that I have found with Mercari, Thrilling, Poshmark, and to a lesser extent, Etsy, is that too many sellers think that women’s clothing sizes  (numerical and alpha) are standardized. Clearly, they are NOT. With that thought process in mind, they don’t do measurements and that creates multiple issues.

        • Sizing varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and even sometimes within a given manufacturer
        • Sizing was not the same for vintage clothing (say 50’s through the 90’s.)
        • Companies like Chico’s create their own sizing scale, so you need to check their sizing chart on their web site rather than trusting the seller’s interpretation
        • The original designer decides how a garment is to fit: traditional (which is a relaxed, slightly loose fit), body conforming (a close or tight fit, aka bodycon) or oversize. By Chico’s sizing scale and measurements, I would wear a size 4 in jackets, for example. However, due to the fact that many are oversized, I can wear a size 3 comfortably.

Anyway, these days I have to be REALLY interested in an item to ask for measurements. Usually, my thought process is if you are too lazy to do measurements, you don’t deserve my money.

Finally, Know Your Own Measurements! Take them with a Cloth tape measure.

I’m a E Bay junkie, and am always on the look out for something cute at Walmart, and have been pretty lucky lately!!  LOL     E Bay you have to really watch what you buy their as people don’t give a very good description of what they are selling, have bought a few things that were not what I thought, and some sell things that are just junk. Use to buy pantyhose and tights and would get them and the elastic was so old they ended up in the garbage. Been looking on Zulily for some really cute clothes, but read reviews, and make my buys on that.

      • #684638

I’m an eBay junkie too. I’ve been bit by the sizing being off a few times and ended up donating the items. Now I will only buy something that has actual measurements in the pictures or description.

    • #684610

Hi Gloria i get most of my clothes from my wife’s cast off’s before they go to the thrift/ charity shops, my wife and i are about the same size so most of her clothes will fit me, apart from her lingerie she has bigger boob’s than me so i buy my own bra’s and panties i buy these brand new from the store’s, I also buy some clothes from the thrift shops,

Probably 80% of my wardrobe comes from thrift stores, online and in person. There are many non-profits here in the Coachella Valley that have thrift stores as part of their fund raising efforts. These days the only things that I always buy new are shoes and undergarments. In terms of clothing, I will buy new items if I need a item of a specific color or style, but I much prefer the Thrill of the Hunt when shopping in thrift stores.

Favorite thrift store is SAVERS which is particularly unique. They started in Canada, but also have stores in the US and Australia. The also use the name Value Village and Village des Valeurs, but I believe most are under SAVERS. Their business model is different in that they partner with local charities. They explain how they work and their recycling philosophy at http://www.savers.com. Unfortunately the closest SAVERS to me is an hour away. Before the pandemic I used to make periodic visits with a good friend of mine, but she has since passed away.

I’ve visited SAVERS stores in Riverside and Murrieta CA, Rochester NY, Toledo OH and Scottsdale AZ. They are all laid out in virtually the same way. They also rack the items by size, rather than be color!! My most rewarding SAVERS find was in their Toledo store. I was wandering around and saw a very nice black Le Suit suit jacket in the coat section that still had the original tags on it, so it was new. I did notice that the tag said “2pc”, but I moved on as I already had a black jacket. Later on I was in the skirt section and saw a black Le Suit skirt and that tag also said “2pc”. At that point I began to take this seriously and found the jacket again. It was a MATCH!! Tried them on and the fit was very good! So, I wound up with a brand new suit that only needed dry cleaning for a total of $25. The tag said that it retailed for $240.

Sometimes you just get lucky. I am reminded of that Lottery promotional line: “You Can’t Win If You Don’t Play!”.

Hi Gloria, I buy over 80% of my clothes from either thrift stores or Facebook’s market place. The nice thing with Facebook’s market place is most of the clothes are good quality designer garments and, at least up here in Canada, ridiculously cheap. I bought a brand new pair of Just Fab dusty rose booties still in the box for $15 also a gorgeous pink lace off the shoulder club dress for the same amount as examples. About the only thing I buy new is lingerie and nylons.\

      Thanks for posting,

      Trish 💖

What a fantastic mental thought concept – a lady has worn these clothes before. I have two business pant suits purchased from a resale shop, courtesy of some taller woman out there(see you have me thinking of this already), for $15 apiece! Honestly, I felt a bit “drab” wearing them in the past. Not any more!!!!!
Another reason why I love this site.

I live in a small community. We have a Goodwill and a St. Vinny’s but shopping there would be the same as coming out. So, I shop online at OneStopPlus (mostly panties) and Torrid.com (everything else).

I’ve bought several pairs of jeans that would be $100 bucks in a regular store and didn’t pay more than $20 or less!

I have bought a few things from thrift stores, but my favorite visit is to a very small town store where I found a lovel skirt, chamisole and blouse. The best part was the two elderly ladies at the counter when I paid. They didn’t say any thing directly, but their smiles, glances to each other and chit chatty comments told me they knee full well that I was buying these for myself. We all wished each other a happy day and we all had smiles as I left.

I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything from a thrift store. Nothing wrong with it, I’ve just never looked. Made lots and lots of donations over the years. It’s mostly Belk, Chicos, Macys, Venus,  Dillards, and Soma. I wear an 8 mostly so I have to jump quickly when something comes out as they go fast.

I use Amazon mainly because of free delivery & returns, also from collection points. I bought a lovely skirt from Amazon a few weeks ago & it could only be delivered to my home address. When it arrived, it was in a Roman Originals packaging rather than the usual Amazon. Who collected it from the Amazon driver? My wife. I had to calm her down & explain. She does know about Kimmy, but certainly doesn’t approve. She finally calmed down after a few days

My clothes come from the following sources

      1. Cast offs from my wife.

This is where it started tbh  I’d ‘save’ things being chucked out due to size or fashion. Tops, panties, lingerie, dresses, jewellery. She’s larger than I am but they served a purpose 😊

      2. online. Amazon, asos, Zara.

asos sell heels in large sizes so all my shoes are from there  I buy everything from these shops, and I try to buy classic styles so the fashion police never need to visit! 😂 Discreet delivery and collection points too. Now my wife knows about my stash I can get them delivered to the house

      3. eBay

This helped me loads! I was able to buy at good value and I always looked for the bundles so I could get a variety of items. Some I have never worn or have been chucked, but at the price you pay it’s no big deal. This is how I know I’m a size 10!
