For me I would only get black and dark brunette colored wigs. Something close or exactly to what my natural hair color is. As for length, since I have been gifted (ugh) with this long neck my wigs have to at least hit an inch or two past my shoulders. In many wig posts on here I have commented that I am a sucker for the “over one eye look” too.

I buy my wigs online and my decision is based on the look shown in the photos. Since I wear large cap wigs, the selection isn’t the largest which is a source of frustration for me. I did buy a wig once in a salon and it was probably the best I have ever had so I should go back to that approach to shopping. Right now, I am in the process of growing my hair out so hopefully about a year from now, my wig days will be gone forever! As the volume of my hair increases in the meantime, the wig situation will probably be even more challenging.

As for cut and color, you should just look at hairstyles and find one you like the best. Face shape and other factors play into suitability of hairstyles and there are websites that can provide you with guidance. Hair color should complement your natural coloration like skin tone. Again, websites can help with this. A wig salon is probably the best solution since their experience is extensive and they have a good base of knowledge will allow them to help you the best.

Ah yes, the quest for our crowning glory. As several have suggested above, the best route is to go to a wig salon and try on a bunch of different ones. When you find the right one, you’ll know.

You might also want to use something like FaceAp to see what you could look like in a variety of styles and colors. That might give you a starting point, but it won’t be definitive.

By far the best way is to go to a wig store and try on lots of different wigs. You will know the right wig as soon as you try it on. Stores in larger cities will be experienced with men. Make a phone call ahead of time and be honest with what you want and see how they react. I’ve recently had a very good experience with a wig store in Dallas.Good luck!

I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re only planning on getting one then think it over . I prefer ones with bangs myself.

I’ve gotten 2 from Paula Young.  There are a lot of styles, lengths and colors to choose from as well as synthetic and natural hair.  There also accesories to take car of the wig(s).  I like the ones I have (1 short, 1 long).  For me I know the hair styles I like on women and have an idea of what I would like (preferably shoulder length or longer) and I went with colors close to my own.  As I only dress at home I’m not overly concerned with “passing”, however, my wife does want me to look pretty.  She helped me pick them out and helps me style them when I wear them.  Have fun shopping and hope you find what you want.

      XOXO
      Suzanne

PS _ I think one of the nice things about wearing a wig is you can change your look when ever you want.  I think of Cher and Dolly who both traveled with trunks of wigs.

I went to a wig shop to purchase my first couple of wigs. The sales associate was so knowledgeable and willing to share her thoughts. We tried on a number of different styles before we arrived at the ones that I prefer, usually a mid length layered cut.

I have a fairly good sense now of what will look flattering on me, given my skin tone and the shape of my face, although the latter is still difficult for me to visualize for myself.

Since then, I have stopped on line at several on-line wig sellers. I watch for sales and have gotten some great deals. Also, purchased a couple name brand wigs on eBay that I have been very pleased with.

      Chloe.

I have 5 wigs now, all brought from AliExpress and all synthetic.  it is a good way to get familiar but the standard cap wigs (cheapest) tend to be in the average size with expansion options.  I am technically a “Large”cap.  i have 1 with a small lace front that just fits and hope to buy soon a large cap lace front wig (13×4 or 13×6)  to give a more natural look along with it being human hair.  You can get large cap sized wigs in that part of the online world.

one of mine i needed to trim the fringe significantly so buy the cheap ones to learn if you need to learn how to do this.  A polystyrene wig head is very handy for that.  if you do stretch in price and quality even though i haven’t would try and get the wig professional cut by a hairdresser to make sure it fits your features.  that is what all the models have had done when you see the online images.

The very first thing you have to do is learn how to measure your head to see if you need an average size or large size wig. You can look on sites like wigs.com where they have instructions. They also have guides for which styles of wig look best for certain face shapes. Whatever you do don’t spend a lot on your first wig.

Chloe, you say in your profile that you would never go out in public dressed unless you are semi-passable.

I would advise you reconsider. I went to a wig salon out of town, en drab, and had a wonderful experience. No website could ever compare to actually trying on various styles.

I went through four or five, going back to the second before deciding it was the “one”.

When I told the sales associate that it was more than I was prepared to spend, she saw the disappointment in my face at not being to get my perfect wig, she then called the owner and was able to get me a 20% discount. That alone brought the smile back to my face.

      Hi Chloe,

If it’s not possible to go to a salon, there are ample wig reviews on YouTube. After trying a few “affordable ” wigs, I found a small hairstyling shop that also sells and cares for wigs. The lady who owns the shop is familiar with CD’s and trans people as she used to be an aesthetician.

She recommends wigs by a company owned by Raquel Welch. I went through their online store and found three I liked, but she vetoed my choices and offered me the style she thought would suit me best. It’s the style I now wear daily to work so I bought two of them, and I get complements on my hair every day.

Check out my latest photo on my profile page and you’ll see the newest wig, it’s also my avatar, visible on this post. The name of that style is “Classic Cut” and it’s what they call a “Bob”

Another thing – you will always get what you pay for when buying a wig! If you get a cheap one, it will scream “CHEAP”!!
I will now continue to get my wigs from Raquel Welch.

      Hope that helps you girl,

      Ms. Lauren M

I have but one wig. It needs a rest. Bought on sale from Glamour Boutique, ” on line.” It fits very large heads like mine.

Paula Young Wigs catalog is filled with m a n y styles, colors, prices and descriptions.I bought – and returned – a large size wig; too small and too bad.

Some internet shops have wigs guides based on your body and face shapes, color preferences, age, etc. There may be “out there” a site that uses your picture to show you how their various wigs may look.

You’ll receive helpful replies to your question. :-)

Try Paula Young wigs online.  All their wigs are modeled by beautiful women and you can get a nice wig for less than 100 dollars.

Chloe, find a wig salon and go there so you can try different colors, lengths and styles. That way you will find the right one for you. Also it will allow you to spend a little more to get a good quality wig instead of buying several before you find “THE ONE” good luck hun!

Hey Chloe, Just think this over a little.  You have the perfect opportunity to go to a salon or wig store to try things on for your “Halloween Event”.  No explanations needed if you plan on going to an “Opposites Day Party” and you really want to see what might work.  Halloween prep is an easy way to learn and experiment.  Just FYI,  Marg

You can go in drab. The wig store shouldn’t mind, so long as you call ahead, to get their OK.
